Manchester United demolished a struggling Newcastle United side
yesterday and moved to within three points of league leaders Arsenal.
An inspired Wayne Rooney opened the scoring on 25 minutes after
a fine run and a perfect cross from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo was on the scoresheet himself on the stroke of half-time
after Michael Carrick's brilliant through ball put him 1 on 1 with
Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given.
Steve harper replaced Given at half time but couldn't stop the
flow of goals into the Newcastle net.
Ronaldo made it 3-0 on 56 minutes after rounding the 'keeper
and slotting the ball the empty net.
Faye scored for the home team after some poor defending from
a corner, but seconds later Rooney added his second and
United's fourth with a curling effort into the far corner. Saha
added the fifth and sealed the result in the 90th minute.
Arsenal dropped two points at St. Mary's where ten man
Birmingham scored an injury time penalty to ensure a share
of the points for the second time this season against
Wenger's men.
Skybet now puts United as 5/6 favourites to retain
their Premier League trophy.
