Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez are the
'superstars' usually hitting the headlines, but Patrice Evra
has been Manchester United's most consistent performer
this season.
Every United fan remembers his debut in the Manchester derby
where he had to be substituted at half time. He was thought
to be yet another transfer blunder by Sir Alex, but Fergie refused
to accept this and kept his faith in the Frenchman who has repaid
him with his dazzling performances this season and last.
His performances early last season were good enough to keep
(then) fans favourite Gabriel Heinze out of the team and since
then he has got better and more consistent.
You would have a job to find a better left back in Europe at the
moment and that is testament to how far he has come since
joining United. His desire to join the attacking effort is balanced
with his aggressive tackling and the pace to recover when caught
out of position. When he is absent from the team United seem to
play a lot slower.
Kids may not be asking their Dad's for Evra's name on the back of
their shirts, but you can be sure that when he is fit, his name is
one of the first on Sir Alex's teamsheet.
So, is he the best left back in Europe?

he has to improve the quality of his crosses.
other than that, he has done marvelously this season so far. every match u can see at least 10 high balls targeting at his area of defence and he has dealt with them very well considering his height, and he was never scared of going into an aerial challenge with his opponents.
at the moment, there is no one better, but to be compared up there with the best, there is still areas to be improved

The position LWB is evra's fav positon on the field. When he goes forward,we switch temporarily to 4-3-3.He is more of an attack-minded player to me,but in defence,he is massive for us.So he gets my vote for the best LB in Europe

Bluntly.
Evra is our best wing back, our best left midfielder and at times our most effective attacking player.
He is quality. Great to have him at OT and not anywhere else. :)

brilliant player, his not tall either but he is so good that it hardly ever shows. Abidal for barcelona is very good aswell, technically sound, quicker than evra, probably just as good defending but i dont think he is as skillful or as ambitious as evra for a left back. Evra at times is like a little brazilian fullback, he plays at left back but sometimes on the attack he is cutting in from the left, i love having him our team. I don't know why but i also get the impression he loves united, he just seems to be someone who always plays for the club like he loves it, never ever has he irrated me even when he plays bad.

I don't know a fat lot about LBs playing in main land europe but looking at the UCL he is definately one of the best in the tournament though. Ashley Cole is very good though as is Gallas if played at LB. I'm sure all barca, shalka and ferbs all have good LBs.

He is the best full left-back in the world.
No doubt after that.

Evra is the best left back in the country and he's one of my favourites in the current squad.
Having said that, his defensive work still needs to improve a little.
Aaron Lennon made him look ordinary.
I have to admit that not many players can do that to Evra, but he did and it would be great to see Evra stifle players like him next season.

Unluckily for Evra, the best full back in the world (according to the French coach)
is Eric Abidal of Barca. For me Evra shades it because he offers so much going
forward and he has so much bravery in defence. He is a lot stronger than his
slight frame would suggest and he can leap higher than most. Im very happy
he is a United player. Normally we wouldnt get too excited about a left back,
but a buzz goes up around Old Trafford when he goes rampaging down that
wing. AND he also has a repetoire of tricks, which will always please the fans.

I don't watch Barca play very often at all, but I do believe that the best 2 left backs in the world are Abidal and Evra. It is unfortunate, though, that the one that plays for our team is the one regarded to be worse by the French national team.
On the other hand though, it could be a positive thing since Evra avoids being injured internationally and gets a rest during these breaks. Like I said, I don't know much about Abidal, but when I have seen him play he seems a bit quicker than Evra and, in my opinion, is better at closing opponents down.
Patrice is sheer class and is currently my favourite United footballer, but he is not perfect. He is fast, technical, at times acrobatic, but I do believe that his main weakness is Abidal's strength - he needs to stay tighter on the opponent. It isn't often that there is a cross coming into the United box from the left, but it does happen every now and then. Perhaps when Evra is able to control his opponent better he will get Abidal's spot.

I definitely think he is the best left back in the Premiership - I'm always amazed at how good he is in the air for someone fairly short and how quick he is with the ball at his feet. Quality.

Patrice, while not the biggest player, is definatly worth his weight in gold. The Frenchman has made the left back spot his own. Just two years ago, many United fans were thinking "Fergie....Why?". Yet two season on and he is an established United player, French International and in my opinion the best left back in the world.
He adds another dimension to the attack. In the big games, e.g. Arsenal, he went down the left wing pulled back a great ball for Ronnie to slot home what should have been the winner, after doing the same for Rooney in the same fixture in the 06/07 season.
In defense, his pace gives him an advantage over most wingers, and he is so strong for his size.
He's got a big heart, he's quick, athletic, can defend and attack. What more could you ask for?
Fergie...time to get Paddy Evra on a new deal I think.

i agree with you guys completely, apart from being the left back in Europe he has also been one of the most consistent players in the team so far.
he also deserves a hefty pay rise for his contribution.
for me Dennis "the great" Irwin has found a perfect replacement

mad to think he's his country's 3rd choice left back.
Really? I know Abidal is first choice but who else is ahead of Evra in the France setup, Abidal aside? I thought Evra was 2nd choice and in fact I remember a match where Evra and Abidal were both on the field at the same time.
EDIT: Oh wait. Just had an epiphany. Tell me Gael Clichy is not ahead of Evra in the French setup. If he is then Domenech is truly in the running for most baffling coach in Europe.

Abidal is **** compared to Evra. Evra got speed, Abidal is slow. Evra can dribbles pass defender, Abidal always pass back. Evra played in the ECL Final, Abidal won some trophy in French. Evra is hot, Abidal is big and ugly as ****s. Not to mention that "Evra" is a much sexier name than "Abidal". The list goes on and on... I don't understand why he was not French no 1 LB...

It's a bit hard to judge really. I think we're in danger of being biased towards our own player and it's already been pointed out that he's not the 1st choice left-back for France.
Grosso, Maldini, Lahm and Abidal are all World class left-backs too.

Grosso: I don't rate him at all and he's certainly no where near as good as Evra. Poor mans Sheasy.
Maldini: Legs gone, past it.
Abidal: Gritty, old-fashioned defender, great player, however he doesn't offer as much going forward as Evra in my opinion.
Lahm: Never get to see him play. I presume Evra is better. ;)

Lahm is right footed. And left footers are better footballers than right footers (cos' I am a lefty too...), and yeah I am biased ... :( But no, Lahm certainly ain't not better than Evra even if he has three left foot... Cristiano Ronaldo is actually a left footer, but he uses his right foot more often because he pitties the fools on the pitch that think they can stop him...
Grosso ? Dude only made famous for making the dive against Aussie in the WC, other than that nothing is special... Except the fact that he's 6'4", God, that was huge for a left back

excellent player and a credit to fergie as he new he was gonna be a hit even wen many doubted his ability . I seen him play for monaco so i thought he was a great player in my opinion we needed him as heinze other than his first season was slow clumbsy and a bad passer of the ball so evra was essential in a quest for glory
