Who do you think is going to get the Bobby Charlton goalscoring record?
Thedon2008
17-03-2008, 05:39 PM
Ronaldo as he is on fire before he's even hit his prime. Rooney is quality but he not the kind of player that will get you goals every match but what is great about him is he works his butt off for 90 mins. They are both special and i hope there future lies at Old Trafford for many many years.

The record is 249 by Bobby.
Rooney has 49 I think.
Ronaldo has something like 55.

I dont think either of them especially not Rooney he doesnt score that many i think he has about 8 in the league!
BUT obviously if we kept Ronaldo for another 10/12 years then i would be shocked if he didnt get it.

Thank you.
I can see Rooney topping that. He is 22, right? I can see him notching at least roughly 15 goals per season until the end of his career, which I would guess could stretch for another 10 years. 10 x 15 = 150 + 50 = 200, but I did say AT LEAST 15 goals per season and he hasn't hit his primer yet ;).
Ronaldo - no, because he isn't a true red, he might, and probably will leave in a few seasons, sadly, but I am simply being realistic.

Both have the potential to score a great amount of goals, but 249 is a massive number to be aiming at. Rooney I think will stay longer but to break that record he will have to average 20 goals a season, for the next 10 years? Ronaldo if he continues in the form he is in at the moment, I think he could get there. Especially if he is used more as an out and out striker, but that's another story for another day ;) But sadly we cannot guarentee that he will stick around for the rest of his career, but how I wish he would

He may wan't to play in Spain but i can see him here for a good few more years, until he is around 29/30 hopefully then if he is getting on a bit we can sell him if he still wants to ply his trade in Spain.
Working for the team then i would go for Rooney
Final outcome Ronaldo is way ahead
However as overall players I really couldn't decide both are vital players to our team as it shows when they don't play.

Ronaldo is not an out an out striker. He's wasted if he plays there. He scores more from out wide; more effective from out wide; he is a winger.
Playing him up front is a waste of talent, like playing Rooney down the left or Giggsy up top.

We all hope he will stay, obviously.
Fergie only has a few years left in him, we all know SAF is a massive motivational factor and no doubt is key to Ronaldo. 29/30 is 7 years. Highly doubt he'll stay that long.

Agreed there, but if someone such as Quieroz took over who already has a good relationship then that may improve our chances of keeping him rather than bringing in a totally new face.
Anyway for the next couple of season i see him remaining with us, so for the time being things looking good.

As Zuco stated Ronnie will probably end up in Spain at some stage.
and Rooney just isnt prolific enough, but Rooney has the greater chance

249 goals is such a large amount. It will take years if at all to break that.

At the rate Ronaldo is going, he's gonna do it without doubt if he stays in Man Utd.
But it is in his character that he will love to beat all records before leaving Man Utd. So I see him smashing all records before leaving.

What do you mean he's not a true red... Have a little faith in him, and what make you think that Rooney will be here throughout his career? With Ronaldo scoring 30 a season, that is like half the time of what Rooney takes... Which Ronaldo do have a contract of like 4 more years?
Correct me if I'm wrong...

I still tally the goals ;)
Ronaldo and Rooney should both be on a century of goals by the end of next
season. I could nearly guarantee that, and they would both still be in their
early/mid 20's.
A lot of people would be surprised to know that Ronaldo is just 1 goal
off Cantona's record of 82 and just 4 off Beckham's 85.
Ronaldo is 24th on the list of all time goalscorers for United,
with Rooney's 72 goals back in 27th place.
Actually now that Im writing it out maybe it would be possible for the 2
to get close to the record..........
Rooney needs to start hitting the target more and taking his chances.
He could easily have had another 10 goals this season.
As for Ronaldo-will he stay or will he go? Your guess is as good as mine but
IF he plays his career out at OT he will have a good chance of breaking
Bobby's 249 goals, but thats a BIG IF.

what sort of question is this?
Rooney isnt even on double figures for the league, been almost non exitent on the other competitions on the goal front, he needs a miracle to break that record, several hattricks.
Rooney is as close to getting that record as i am to a first place in the man u squad

it will be great if they get the record.....but i dont think either will unless they stay for another 10 years if they can......
rooney will mostly stay but he isnt much of a goalscorer for us...he is our provider........
and ronaldo as everybody must feel wont be around here that long as he wants to play in the la liga...
so he will leave us unless he gets the treble or something like that...
so i think neither...

Rooney has to play his game instead of trying to copy the more skillfully gifted players on the team, thats why he is trying backheels when he is in a position to shoot (i think it was against pompey), and even trying Nani's gymnastics, pity he could only do a catwheel

this guy proved yesterday that he can lead and still get us a victory, leading by example.
he has been a really consistent player the whole of this season, he doesnt suffer from the Saha injury syndrome, and i believe that the captaincy can develop him into a complete player with a greater sense of responsibility.
what do you guys think?
Jazz 16
20-03-2008, 04:05 PM
No way. He is too much of a sulker and can get his head down in
the big games, when we REALLY need him.
Id rather have Giggs, Rio or Vida in ahead of him.
In fairness to Ronnie the extra responsibility did make him
play better I feel. He can be Portugals captain but not Uniteds.

We haven't had a leader since Keane left and Ronaldo certainly isn't a leader or captain material.
Last night he excelled in the matches he always excells in, against the weaker teams he thrives and always scores a brace lol.
But too often in matches, often important matches, Ronaldo goes missing and sometimes even gives up, complaining and whining.
Ferdinand or Vidic or perhaps VDS are all Captain material. Perhaps even Anderson in a few years or Hargreaves after he actually plays a few games.
No, definitely not Ronaldo.

But seriously, it is the character that is the key criteria for a captain. Does Ronaldo has that necessary character? I am not convinced at this moment.

Hell no! United can't possibly afford hving a sulker who possessed a huge egoistic trait in him as the special one who leads the best team in the world out on the pitch. With that, lies great responsiblity. A true United captain ought to possessed exquisite leadership qualities, instinctive ingenuity and natural warrior spirit, with an indomitable never-say-die attitude. And it's a matter of fact that this can be only applied on players like Gazza, Rio, Vida, Giggsy, Hargo & Wazza.
Currently if playing, these are how they should line-up as captains:
1. Gary Neville
2. Ryan Giggs
3. Rio Ferdinand
4. Edwin VDS
5. Nemanja Vidic
In the near future, it should be something like that:
1. Wayne Rooney
2. Owen Hargreaves
3. Patrice Evra
;)

I think you are rather short sighted in your analysis. Rooney averages 15-20 goALS a season therefore assuming he will stay with us another 10 years which is not unreasonable to assume and in that time he will mature into an even better player and goal scorer yes I think its not unrealistic to forsee Wazza becoming our record goalscorer eclipsing Charltons record.
Except that is if Ronaldo doesnt beat the record before him and even if he stays another 5 years before he goes off to sunnier climates, he my well exceed 250 goals. I certainly would not bet against it given his prolific record especially against mediocre teams like Bolton last night.
As for captaincy material Ronny has a long way to go yet. He still has to perform against the big teams-(Sunday will hopefully be the stage where he can silence the critics),be less selfish in possession and not have nightmares like the derby game where he acted like the proverbial premadonna.Only then can he be classed as a truly great player never mind a potential United skipper.I for one can then buy into this premature frankly silly Sky sports talk that he is the best player in the world.Did you hear Jamie RedknAPP last night comparing him to Tiger woods? It just made me cringe but then it was typical Redknappism(no disrespect to hARRY who is vastly knowledgerable)-absolute nonsense.
Hargreaves or vidic are in my view strong disciplined characters who fit into a natural leader category and unlike Rooney play in positions that suit being a captain.

ronaldo is captain of portugal right? he has all the right characteristics of being captain. Pure determination, complete desire to win and pure passion. All the greta players are a little selfish. I laugh at the comments about ronaldo on here sometimes. Okay he hasnt always performed against the big teams but there is no doubt he is truly a great player. Anyone who cannot see this is pretty blind imo or very biased in there opinion. If there is one united player who is truly great at the moment its ronaldo.
Don't know whether he should be uniteds captian however. Rio does the job well.

told you before mate I am not all being biased in assessing Ronaldo. Yes he has those qualities you mentioned above but to be a captain you have to be or at least aspire to be the ultimate team player eg track back, dont lose the head in big games etc which Ronaldo has yet to acquire. As for skippering Portugal I wasnt aware of that but if true Scolari must be really short of senior players who can play such a role.My own country tried something similar with Robbie Keane with disastrous consequences.
Ronaldo imo still has to strike the balance between being unselfish andf taking responsibility-maybe he could watch Cantona videos in that regard- in order to help him perform better in the big matches(roma last year aside). You say he hasnt ALWAYS performed in the the matches that matter-unfortunately mate we are destined to agree to disagree on that point.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has warned the Premier League to beware: he expects Wayne Rooney to return to goalscoring form in time for the crucial season run-in.
United currently top the league but have relied far more on goals from Cristiano Ronaldo than from striker Rooney.
The England international has struck just 13 times this season, compared to Ronaldo's 33, and hasn't found the net since his brace at Newcastle a month ago.
Indeed at Old Trafford Rooney hasn't found the net in a league game since October 27th's 4-1 demolition of Middlesbrough.
Nonetheless, Ferguson has seen Rooney every day in training and reckons it's only a matter of time before the striker explodes into goalscoring form. Rooney, says Fergie, could well reach peak form at exactly the right time and ensure United retain their Premiership crown.
"The season is not finished yet," said the Old Trafford boss. "Wayne showed his real form towards the end of last season and scored some important goals for us. So he’s well capable of getting more than 20 goals.
"All strikers, particularly younger ones, start to wonder where their next goal is coming from when they are not scoring. And when they are, they don’t think it’s ever going to end. Wayne’s no different. All a striker needs is that confidence factor to score. I’m sure Wayne will get that and score plenty more goals this season."

Yeah excellent article and reinforces a lot of the points i have made about Rooney. There's still room for improvement from him which is frightening for all Premiership defences. I also think capello will be good for him who has a vast knowledge of the game and discuss things from a continental perspective. watch this space I say:)
