Wes Brown was delighted to be back in action over the Christmas period and says he is ready and willing whenever he is needed.

The 27-year-old defender impressed at right back against Wigan and Reading, filling in for the rested Gary Neville. Despite missing out against Newcastle, Brown is expected to be involved in Sunday's FA Cup third round tie against Aston Villa, and he is raring to go.

"I've filled in a bit for Gaz [Neville] over Christmas and it was great to be back," Brown told ManUtd.com (http://www.manutd.com) at the opening of a new five-a-side football pitch situated in the Plymouth Grove housing estate where he grew up.

"The gaffer always changes things around at Christmas because of the amount of games we have to play and I was very happy to be selected. Hopefully I'll be involved in the next few games. Everyone is battling for places which can only be good for the team. We're all doing very well this season and we want to keep it going."

Although the Reds left Tyneside a little disheartened following the 2-2 draw with Newcastle, Brown admits Chelsea's stalemate at Villa Park helped to ease the mood.

"Drawing against Newcastle after going 2-1 up was disappointing but Chelsea didn't take advantage of that," he acknowledged. "We're not going to say it's over but we're definitely confident in how we're playing at the moment; the lads are all buzzing. We looked a little bit tired against Newcastle but that's going to happen after a busy Christmas period. Other than that we're playing great football, scoring goals and I think that will carry on."
