Phil Bardsley is set to sign for Villa on loan until the end of the season
The Manchester United full-back spent the first-half of the campaign on loan to Rangers and had been linked with a move to Sunderland.
Speaking after his side's heartbreaking late FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford, Martin O'Neill said: "I spoke to Sir Alex a few days ago about Bardsley and he wouldn't mind at all.
"But like anything else, until things are signed, I won't take it for granted.
"Hopefully he'll join us this week, though obviously he can't play against Manchester United (in the league) next weekend.
"We just want to start building the squad up a wee bit to give the players a helping hand."
