Edwin van der Sar believes Manchester United's fans can lift the club to victory over Charlton and a place in the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool have been in superb form for the last six weeks and with just one game remaining in the campaign, the two rivals are separated by just one point.
The Red Devils are in pole position and a victory over Charlton at Old Trafford on Sunday would ensure them a spot in next term's Champions League.
Van der Sar knows the importance of securing second place, it would mean they do not have to negotiate their way through qualifying, and the Dutch keeper is looking for the fans to play their part at the weekend.
"We know we need to win and hopefully the fans can help us do that," the Dutch keeper told MUTV.
"We need them to get behind us like they always do and perhaps even give us a little bit more support to try to get us over the little blip we've had with the loss at Chelsea and the draw with Middlesbrough.
"The title is gone but after that you have to make sure you get second place.
"It's important for both the club and the players, especially after the World Cup, because it wouldn't be good to have to play a qualification match after the tournament.
"We certainly deserve that second spot and we all need to work hard to make sure we get the three points against Charlton."
Red Devils midfielder Darron Gibson will head for surgery in a bid to clear up a hernia complaint.
The 19-year-old, who has made one appearance for the club this term, has been advised that he needs to have the surgery in order to give him a chance of fighting for a place next term.
"The club have insisted I have the surgery on May 9th for the hernia problem" said the Irishman. "I've had trouble with it for a few months and playing over 45 games has had its toll on the injury."
