OK, those of you in the know, sssh. I want someone who has (they think) an understanding of the game of cricket, to explain it to a mythical american member.
Starting with 2 sides, when ones out they are in the field and the other team that was out in now at the crease. Carry on ........................................
So hiram, what was your question?
Hiram: Whats Cricket?

Dictionary definition.
Cricket: A stupifyingly boring game in which men with beer bellies
take it in turns to have a rock solid ball thrown at them, whilst
everybody else chases said ball around a field. Often used by
hyperactive people to induce instant sleep.

I think Family Guy puts it best...
Oh, it’s Cricket. Marvelous game, really. You see, the bowler hurls the ball toward the batter who tries to play away a fine leg. He endeavors to score by dashing between the creases, provided the wicket keeper hasn’t whipped his bails off, of course.

Cricket is NOT played by fat bellied sportsmen!!! Wherever did you get that impression. These lads are (sometimes) as fit as footballers and play their game for a damn sight longer that 90 minutes.
One day cricket is the best, a great day and a result.
You can akin cricket with chess; its two captains fighting it out on the field of contest, pitting their wits against each other using specially designed tactics which included fast bowlers, medium bowlers, spin bowlers, specialist catchers (slips), long mid on, silly mid on, third man, out field and in field. The ball can travel at approx 100MPH on arrival at the batsman; how he decides to play it depends on the result obviously; if he hits it straight out of the field of play without it touching the ground he scores 6. If he hits it over the boundary ropes and it touched the ground before, scoring 4. Each run between the creases earns one run per length run; eg: if he runs back to his starting point, 2 runs.
If a player is caught out when he hits the ball and its caught by a fielder, he is out with no run. If the batsmen have crossed over before the ball is caught, the batsman not out remains in at the striking end; the new batsman takes up position at the none striking end. Behind the striking batsman is the wicket keeper. He can stump the batsman if he ventures out of the "crease" without taking a shot, or having taken the shot runs, but the ball is returned to the wicketkeeper before either batman arrives at the crease. This is a run out.
When all the players are out, or the total number of overs has been reached (in a limited over game) then the teams change over and the opposition begins the haul of attaining the opposite sides score.
An over consists of 6 deliveries. A bowler comes in from one end and delivers a ball to the batsman then repeats this a further 5 times. Each ball is a delivery. The bowling then switches ends with another bowler taking his over thus.
In a normal Test match, the game is played over 5 days to a result, each team having the opportunity to field/strike twice. There are also 3 day tests and limited over games (usually one day).
Play normally starts at about 100 hrs, taking lunch at 1330 and tea at 1600; play finishes after a certain number of overs have been bowled or when bad light stops play. The umpires (2) dictate end of play by approaching the wickets and removing the bails from the top.
Unlike football referees, and except in India, umpires are well respected for their impartiality. India think the world is against them and argue against any particular umpire at the drop of a hat. They are the Steven Gerrard's of cricket ;)

Ian botham, Freddie Flintoff, WG Grace, Ramesh Powar to name but a few.
These lads are (sometimes) as fit as footballers and play their game for a damn sight longer that 90 minutes.
Indeed they 'play' for a few hours, but 99% of that time is spent standing around doing nothing at all, whereas your average footballer will cover 8 miles a game.

Test matches may be boring, but ODI/ 20/20 games certainly aren't. Used to play myself a few years ago, in Saturday/sunday league for a team.

Cricket is great entertainment, but rarely produces excitement. The fun is in the numbers, if you like figures and statistics this is perfect, if you prefer to see rapid progress, look elsewhere.

for once i agree with RD....Cricket is a great game and at times the athletes in cricket are fitter than footballers but also they do have some fatties in it aswell.
I used to play cricket since i was like 3 or 4...i had a scholarship with warwickshire Cricket club at the age of 11 and played with them till under 17 age and i also represented my district and birmingham against teams not just from england but also from other countries such as clubs from south africa so insulting cricket is an insult to me!lol...by the way i aint no beer belly unfit jellyroll, so thats not a fair steriotype!lol
i love cricket!lol

Its a sport us Australians have always dominated and always will =)NOT always, but your national team use intimidation a lot and we all know its put on, but umpires seem too scared.
We have a saying here when something is unfair; "Its simply not cricket".
The english always play it fair, others, especially pakistan, cheat like hell and get away with it.
Our groundsmen even prep the pitches to favour opposition for heavens sake!!

Those are only test matches. ODI are much more fun. The 20/20 which has appeared in recent years has proven to be a big Hit because it is fast paced and exciting.
Playing it is alot more fun. You shouldn't bash it unless you've tried it. ;)

Anyone shed some light on this?

Cricket, the normal game is beyond my comprehension to be honest.
Anything that takes 5 days to complete needs a clear out ...
Needs spicing up !!
So we got 20/20 ...
20 overs per side.
In they go and whack, whack, whack !!
They just go crazy and smash the ball everywhere !!
It's much better than baseball ...
Then again, watching paint dry is better than baseball

^^^ Ahhhh I see....20 overs per side. It all makes sense now.
Its usually 50 overs right?
Cheers for that...it had been bugging me for about a week.

For one day matches it is.
20/20 matches are more exciting for the fans but takes a lot of skill out of the batting side of the game - it just turns it into a slogfest.
Generally, the 'old school' who liked munching cucumber sandwiches and sipping tea whilst watching a 'jolly good game of cricket' don't seem to be fans of 20/20 but it's a hit with the beer-swilling 'barmy army' cricket fans of today.

I watched an incredible game of 20/20 today....
with Essex kicking some serious tail.
This lad called Graham Napier was immense. he broke all sorts of records today.
152 no-highest innings ever ina 20/20 game.
16 sixes and 10 fours- most number of 6's ever.
last over read:6,4,6,6,6,1.
I know nowt much about cricket but that was savage to watch.
You see this Dwarfy? thoughts
