On a marvellous European night for Manchester United in Rome, the one cloud on
the horizon was the injury suffered by Nemanja Vidic.

The Serbian central defender twisted his left knee and was replaced just half-an
-hour into United's 2-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg victory over Roma.

Vidic is currently undergoing a scan on the injured knee, which will reveal the
extent of the problem and how long the 26-year-old may be out of action.

"I pray it is not serious, because he is such an integral part of our team,"
manager Sir Alex Ferguson said.

"We think it might be a nerve injury, but we can't be sure at this moment."

Vidic left Rome's Olympic Stadium on crutches, with concern in the United camp
that he could have sustained ligament damage.

If he has, it will be a blow to United's bid to retain the Premier League title and go
all the way in the Champions League.

By an unwanted coincidence, former Spartak Moscow star Vidiuc broke his collar
bone almost a year ago to the day, playing for United against Blackburn in a
Premier League game. That injury ruled him out for a month.

He was rushed back for United's Champions League semi-final second leg against
AC Milan at the San Siro on May 2nd. United lost the game 3-0 and were
eliminated from the competition 5-3 on aggregate.

Should they complete he job against Rioma at Old Trafford (where they beat the
Giallorossi 7-1 last season at the same stage), they look likely to meet Barcelona in this season's semi-final.

The Catalans beat Schalke 1-0 away last night in the firstleg of their quarter-final, and will be favourites to reavch the last four.

But United would certainly want Vidic in the heart of their defence for that and
other crucial fixtures coming up between now and the end of the season.
