I have just over a year left of school now and then hopefully on to Uni (as you brits call it) to study some course and get myself a job where I'll have enough money to afford high speed internet connection so I can overtake carly and Jazz to become the highest shouter on the shoutbox!!!
See, I'm thinking ahead ;)
Anyway, any suggestions on what job would suit me or I should aim for? :D

lmao, your aim in life is to overtake me and Carly on how many shouts we have posted..........;-)
dear oh dear Bert, what will we ever do with you.
Anyway my advice would be to go to college cos its a laugh and a degree
will always come in handy if you get stuck in later life.
Do something you have a passion, liking or interest for.
You need to start working out what you want to do, cos it could save you
years down the line.
If you arent to sure what you want to do then maybe do a degree in
business/marketing/management side of things. You get to do a language
(I know you speak some french Bert) and its relatively easy to get with a
bit of waffling and studying at correct times.
Thats what I did and had great fun doing it, even though now my
profession is completely different......
A lot of kids dont really know what they want out of life when they come out of
school so it can be difficult but there IS something for everyone.
Just work hard at the start be it in a job or college and it will hold you in good
stead for the future and try and do something you actually enjoy because
you spend most of your life working.......

Read this thread a while ago but had no time to write this posting until today. You see, I am down with drug allergy today with puffy eyes. And I do mean very puffy eyes, if you ever had such an experience. I seriously doubt I will be allowed access to my office because probably nobody would recognise me. Lol. In any case, for you bitch, I know I will still have to complete this posting. Only for you, don't tell people....:D
You are not just being humble but wise indeed to seek counsel. And where else but in the forum can you cast such a wide net for free, kind and well-meaning advices. The Bible, too, said that the wise seek counsel; not the 'wise' do not need any counsel and go ahead to do what they think is 'good'. Not that you will surely find your answers here but hopefully at least find some useful pointers or prinicples that you can utilise for your own further inputs in your thought processes. So kudos to you, only sweet 17? :)
I agree with most of what Jazz said. You do and should start planning, if not at least start wondering, as early as possible what you intend to do to save you some years of unnecessary wilderness.
I personally made mistakes galore in my earlier years. After I was done with my studies, I was a bum for one, two years, trying to start this and that with some friends, thinking that I could make it big and impressed my doubting parents, relatives and peers alike. I was young, fearless, strong-headed and honestly thought that success in life is so easy when I was actually just plain lost and knew not what I was doing. I didn't know I needed advice... After suffering enough consequences, I was finally persuaded by my best friend that what I really needed to do was to wake up from my big fat dream and get a proper paying job for crying out loud. Lol.
And more mistakes were made when I joined the advertising industry I thought I was interested in. Lasted a year or so before I knew it was not what I really wanted. Depressed and desperate, I then only started to ponder seriously what I really wanted to do in life, something you are doing now at 17!
Anyway, I then thought I 'realised' I had actually always wanted to be a banker so I did the first wise thing by squeezing myself into the finance industry albeit pretty late and without the relevant experience, thus starting from a low position. So you think that would be hunkie dorie till now? Surprisingly, nope again. I stayed there for a total of 5 years but something was still amissed and I slowly realised again sadly that I was still off track! Why? Because banking is not my passion and neither is employment for me... I finally realised what I truly wanted halfway through these 5 years but did not leave immediately due to the then catastrophic Asian crisis in 1997, obviously out of fear and financial insecurity. All in all, I spent 7, 8 years in wilderness until 2000 when I finally took the courage to plunge into my current profession, 5 months before my marriage...
Long story thus far perhaps but probably there are already a few things you may like to take note of. Firstly, you may not be able to know what you really and truly want until some suitable time no matter how hard you try. Secondly, interest is not enough, you need passion. That something that makes your spirit stirs within you, never felt it as a job per se but both a challenge and pleasure, wanting not just to do it well but to excel in it and having the undying desire to do it for the rest of your life. Thirdly, passion is not complete too, it must also be complimented by your strengths or at least inclinations so that you have a pretty fair chance of doing well in it. For example, I may have the passion for football but I know I can't even get into my local community team no matter how hard I try. Know what I mean?
Thus, at this point in time, you may perhaps like to start to think about your passion and inclinations. Marry both of them and you would probably at least be pretty close.
So surely that would be it? Not really again. There is yet another aspect of what you really want in life to ponder about too that has got nothing to do with passion or inclinations... Is financial rewards your concern? How about time factor?
Inspired by books that I read and whatever thoughts I have gathered, I do have an interesting theory to share. I call it the Money/Time Quadrant. Briefly, it is as follows:
Quadrant 1: Have Money Have Time
- Having money but no time is useless.
- Investors, non-hands-on business owners (their businesses are auto-pilot and do not need your involvement eg franchise, having managers working hard for you) etc.
Quadrant 2: Have Money No Time
- You can't stop working and must be physically present to maintain your income and lifestyle.
- Professionals like doctors, lawyers etc, hands-on business owners (their businesses need them) etc.
Quadrant 3: No Money Have Time
- Happy go lucky, nothing bad in itself.
- Plain bums who hate to work, people who desire the simple lifestyle etc.
Quadrant 4: No Money No Time
- Saddest of the lot, honest, hardworking but struggling with life.
- Low paying jobs etc.
Which quadrant do you REALLY want to be in?
So there you have it, K4T. I have spent almost my entire afternoon doing this posting just for you. Hope you may find some pointers or principles useful for yourself. As a faceless friend behind the keyboard from afar, that is the best I can do for you.
I wish you well.... Bitch.:)

the advice id give ya lad is to definitely definitely go to college, you don't necessarily need to decide what you want to do for a profession just yet.. Arts or business is always a good degree to have and doesnt tie you down to anything!
Firstly make sure you go to a decent University .. you're from the west of Ireland make sure you're far enough away from home so this may rule out Galway so I'd suggest go to UL if you can!! thats where I went I'm just finished unfortunately, I LOVED it!!! Don't go to Dublin its a crap place to go to college! far too expensive and no craic! UL is quality , I reckon its the best laugh in Ireland..
If you think you're up to it I'd definitely consider going to Scotland or England! great craic! and that lovely Irish accent you have will help when your trying to pull!! always works for me anyways!! I have mates in Sunderland Uni : class but we always go out in Newcastle when we visit which is wicked! Edinburgh's nice, Swansea is insane!! if i was starting again id def go to the UK!!!
Hope the LC goes well mate

You could use the prune methodology. :D
Buy a tin of prunes, eat them and leave the stones in the bowl.
Then for each stone it's...
1 stone - Tinker, 2 stones - tailor, 3 stones - soldier, 4 stones - sailor, 5 stones - rich man, 6 stones - poor man, 7 stones - beggar man, 8 stones - thief. If there's more than 8 stones you have to go through them again until you get to the last stone.
You can thank my mum for that one :o She always used to make me eat 5 prunes
Or you could do what I did. Go to uni then after you graduate buy a couple of jobs newspapers (there's 2 I bought - 1 had listings by job type and the other by geographical area) and apply for all the jobs that look interesting (I applied for 21 jobs).

Ahem....
I'll try not bore you keano, so here goes my humble opinion.
I didn't know what I wanted to do either and with one year left before i was supposed to graduate with my A-levels, my dad died in an accident.
I never got to study and did any job I could find, until I got into sales.
I did that till my sister graduated and then became a musician for 2 1/2 years.
After that, life gave me a break and I've been able to use my German language skills in a great job for the past 1 1/2 years.
My advice is this:
1. Study some thing "safe" meaning you could potentially do it for life and while you might not be super happy, you won;t feel tortured either. Having a degree is very important. You wo;t feel depressed like I used to (and might in future) when you open the classified ads.
2. Learn a foreign language, if you can. French and Spanish are good choices. They are the "easier" latin languages and most required European languages in the job market.
3. If you ever do any summer jobs, try to do something sales-related. Nothing will open your mind, teach you negotiation, as well as presentation skills and how to read people like sales.
4. If you have any "wild" ambitions, be bold and try them after you've graduated. You will regret not having to tried your hand at them and it will always be in the back of your mind.
Try them early on, so you know if you can make a living out of it or if you should go back to doing a more stable job.
Nothing is worse than being married, having kids and a mortgage and then deciding you're going to throw away your desk job to pursue a career in jazz ballet.

Mate, first off, that must have been so tough for you as a young fella, I can only imagine. Hope you are good now :)

I can't advise on education because mine was a little bit crap to be honest ...
I can't really give careers advice either - because I just steamrolled my way into
my job and wouldn't take 'no' for an answer.
But I can give a little advice on how you should think and plan.
I hope it is of use to you.
Make a list of all your dreams and ambitions and always keep it with you - read it
at least 5 times a day and visualise actually achieving these aims and living the
life you want....
Yes it is a dream - but ambition and determination can make dreams come true.
I was 14 years of age and a scruffy little madam in the middle of nowhere,
Trannsylvania, Romania, and I made a list ... :)
1. Go to the UK - the land of golden pavements
2. Study hard for a degree in accounts.
3. Pass ALL my exams.
4. Find a job that pays me good money.
5. Buy a ............
Well it went on and on and was in a different format to this but you see what I
mean.
I was in no position to even think like this - so they told me - how would you get
to the UK to study ? Well I hadn't actually thought about that.
From the day I wrote that list - it was 10 years almost to the day I passed my
Accountancy degree in the UK and took up the offer of a very nice job !!
It proves that despite all the odds being stacked against you - if you have drive,
ambition and determination ... you can achieve anything you want to.
You're a very clever guy Bertie ... I knew that after I spoke to you when you first
arrived on this forum - a loud mouthed, offensive, self righteous, arrogant little
git ... and I mean that.
But you have a quality that is very rare in someone your age - you listen and
learn from everything around you - without even trying. Today you act like a mod
should on this forum - no one asked you to do it - but you do it anyway !! Maybe
you may become a mod ... Super Mod etc etc ... You have adjusted everything
about your character and your personality to become something you maybe
wanted to be.....
If you can do this at your age, so easily, then I forecast that as you get a little
older and wiser, you will be able to adjust your character and personality to do
whatever you want to do Bertie.
So don't weigh yourself down with limitations because "it seems impossible" or "it
seems so far away" or any other sad excuses right now. Nothing is impossible
and I mean nothing !! Your a scruffy little sod in the middle of nowhere, Eire ...
and believe me - it is not impossible to do what you want to do ... :)
Trust me, I have done it and you can too ...
Just make some good choices right now - and go for it !!! ;)

Personally I plan to head off to Europe find a reasonably sized patch of land that hasn't been claimed by any official nation yet, seize it, register it as the Republic of Mancunia with the UN and install myself as Dictator/President. Our national dish shall be Combination Chow Mein. On day's ending with "Y" nobody will have to wake up before 12:00pm unless they want to. Work hours are flexible as long as you can finish your work. If you feel that you can get it done in a couple of hours start at 1:00pm and finish at 3:00pm. If work is found to be substandard in a grossly negligent way you shall be exiled to Stamford Bridge to spend the rest of your days as a personal assistant to John Terry. As expected the flag will be built around our club crest and we shall remain on good terms with all European nations and cities barring the North West of London whom we shall remain frosty with due to their harboring of enemies. Yeah that's about it. Oh and the national religion will be a variant on Norse Mythology, I've always felt that if people were genuinely excited about a religion they enjoy it more. Combination Chow Mein will always be in abundant supply even if it means importing Chinese people by airmail.
In fact every 50 meters there will be a street stall selling the stuff. We'll make money by allowing Nike and AIG sponsorship rights to our country. In fact it could be called "Nike and AIG are proud to present the Republic of Mancunia". Out of kindness Marijuana will be legal as long as people respect non smokers and light up in private or designated areas. African American gospel choirs will sing in the mornings to wake people up. Evenings will be more instrumental based music in the public plaza. Cafes, Clubs & restaurants will play as they will. Happy Hour is midday to 3 o'clock then again from 5 o'clock to 9 o'clock. Also during happy hour the first round of drinks comes with a free small side of Combination Chow Mein.
Do any of you guys know what Congee is? It will be one of our breakfast dishes. It's a soupy kind of savoury rice. Very soupy can come with egg or prawns. Whatever.
Yeah this will be my nation. Adidas stores will be tolerated and perhaps even pitied but never embraced. Our national anthem will be be Johnny be Goode and our national motto is "If it can't be fixed with Duct Tape, it can't be fixed". Gay, Straight, Lesbian even if you're sexually attracted to drainpipes there will be a place for you in Mancunia. Remember this post people, for one day when I live my dream you shall all be welcome to my personal heaven.
Oh and in case I forget our main exports will be Nike Merchandise, Combination Chow Mein and The Stuff Dreams are Made Off (Whatever that is). Our only import will be Chinese Chefs. Spread the Word.
Paradise is Coming.
