A 9-year-old Australian girl has been banned from playing tennis at her local club over the noise she makes while competing.

The Herald Sun of Melbourne, Australia, reported that Lauryn Edwards was told last weekend that she could no longer play after an opposing player complained about her grunting.

It feels natural to do my noise. I'm not faking it. It makes me play better. When I don't do it, I don't play my best tennis.
-- Lauryn Edwards, 9

Edwards' favorite player is Maria Sharapova. And like her hero, Edwards grunts when she strikes the ball.

Her father, who has turned to the regional and national tennis federations for assistance, said the Mt. Carmel Tennis Club in Sunbury asked him for assurances that she would remain quiet while playing.

"They told me to guarantee she won't grunt or she can't play," Duncan Edwards said, according to the report. "How can I guarantee that? She's been doing it since she was really little. She's her own person.

"What do they want me to do? Put Band-Aids over her mouth?" he added. "They made her cry on the court when they told her. She was in such a state that I had to bring her home mid-match."

-- Duncan Edwards

Lauryn Edwards has been playing tennis since she was 4, after it was suggested as a way to help manage her attention deficit disorder. She says the grunting is part of her game.

"It feels natural to do my noise. I'm not faking it," she said, according to the Herald-Sun. "It makes me play better. When I don't do it, I don't play my best tennis. And now people have told me I can't play if I do it."

Paul Hackett, the vice president of the club, told the newspaper, "No one is not allowing her to play. Sorry, I can't say anymore than that."

But Russell Baldry, the president of the Northern Suburbs Junior Tennis Association, in which Edwards plays, said the situation was disappointing.

"They just had to ask her to try and be a little quieter, not make a federal case out of it," he said, according to the report. "This is not in the association's interests and not in the girl's interests. The association will have to discuss it because we certainly have not stopped her from playing."

The club are completely right in my opinion. I play tennis for fun and my brother at all ireland level and we both agree that it is not necessary at all for that outrageous grunting.

Sharapova does it that loud only because she knows it unnerves her opponents and because her coach Nick Boletteri taught her to do it.

It's a joke.

I would allow lee way for pros as they hit the ball at high speeds but for your average club player it is only that they are either trying to unnerve their opponent or they are trying to idolise their favourite player.

The father should know better and tell her to quit the grunting.

I might sound harsh but I am right.

Some people cant help grunting. The amount of energy and strength they
put into shots means that sometimes people grunt. Remeber Seles, Muster
amongst others. Maybe some like Sharapova put it on a little more to distract
the opponent but its natural in a lot of peoples cases.

Notice her dad is called Duncan Edwards.....

well....if she is talented, she always can find other club.Grunting is bad thing for any player, and i hate whan i hear it.But,imho the club was not right.I mean....she is still young, there is so much devolpment space in hers possible career.Grunting can dsappear by practise, and just like they were training her service,backhand,forhand.......they should train her how she can stop grunting on easy way.

Did You Know:Bjorn Borg was banned from his tennis club at the age of 12 for using bad language on court and generally getting angry.

He changed his ways and went onto to become one of the greatest ever players to play the game........renowned especially for his cool persona on court

Perhaps she will learn that grunting like a hyena is not acceptable.

^^^same as Federer I think. Roger had the worst temper possible, always
smashing rackets and hurling abuse.
Federer and Borg were known for their coolness on the court and never getting
annoyed.

thats ridiculous. grunting is an exhale of air from exercise. the same way kung-fu fighters make noise when they fight. its becos of the power they put into it. a rocket cant take-off silently, a grenade won't blow up without noise, more power = more effort = more noise.

Nope nate, you're wrong :p

Why then doesn't federer grunt or the majority of the men playing the game?

They hit the ball faster and with more power than the women.

The decibel level at which Sharapova and the likes grunt is completely ridiculous and is certainly not as a result of the power at which they hit the ball.

well no disrespect to women. but there genetically weaker than men arent they. maybe that has something to do with it. also, i think it depends on ur voicebox, u neva know about sharapova, she mite seriosly not be able to help it.
