Two of the greatest football legends two of the greatest players ever one is brazilian and one is argentinian
pele the king of the 1000 goal and maradona th drug dealerther are both good but pele better even maradona style better
pele a realy goal scorer dribbles and scores but many of his goals are ordinary and normale on the other hand he is able to score from free kicks
but maradona is a hole diffrent story he driblles and fools 5 defenders and pass the ball the recive it and score it with his head even he is shorter than his pants
he also assists as he scores but he ended him self by drugs
but many prefer pele cuz he smyles wheatever happens shoots from far and dont prefer brazilians only
you may psot videos for caomparing goals and attitude

Well I never watched any of them live but of what clips I have seen they were both excellent. Most people I talk to say Pele is the best footballer ever to live. A smaller amount of people say Maradona. I think Maradona is more popular thanks to his off football lifestyle and his drug problems. I would rate both equally but my father who knows and watched them in more detail says Pele is better. Then again we all have different opinions lol

No competition really in my opinion, Maradona wins easily
because he played in more than one country and was still
amazing. Pele only ever played in Brazil where the standard
of defenders is very poor. My dad told me Maradona went to
Napoli and single handedly won them the league! I love
watching videos of Maradona but to be honest I find Pele
quite boring to watch. Maradona wins :)

Maradona is the best player I have ever seen play football.
I can't remember the 1986 World Cup (it was before my 5th birthday) but I remember him from the 1990 and 1994 World Cup. By 1994 he was fading due to his cocaine addiction (I can still remember him running to the camera with a face like a crazed maniac after scoring) but in 1990 he was still one of the best players in the World. I have, of course, seen the goals he scored against England in the '86 World Cup and, whilst he may never be forgiven in this country for the Hand of God, his 2nd goal was one of the best I have or ever will see.
I've seen clips of Pele and his goal scoring record was nothing short of phenomenal but I just have to take other people's word for it, and it does seem the general consensus, that he is the best player to have ever lived.

Its safe to say that they were the 2 best ever.
I think your thread is a bit misleading Abo.
You call Pele a king and Maradona a drug dealer, which is very unfair to the
latter. I watched Maradona play and followed his career with Barca, Napoli etc.
and the national team very closely. I just about remember the '86 World Cup,
where he pretty much won the whole thing on his own. The goal vs England was
the greatest goal I have ever seen and the one vs Belgium was unreal too.
There is a great pic (which Ill try to find), where Maradona is surrounded by 6
Belgian players. It showed how feared he was as a player.
Zuco makes a good point above that Pele played in the one country against
weaker defenders. He still got over a 1000 goals which was amazing and his
introduction to World football at the '58 World Cup was truly inspirational.
For me there isnt much between these two, but Maradona wins it for me,
as the greatest player to have ever played.

No way best and cantona are the best ever, great players but i wouldn't put either f them in the ten best playrs of all time. Pele was a great player who played in great teams, and although he excelled through out his career he never moved abroad. Maradonna played in numerous different teams many not the top teams in the world and alsmot single handidly won trophies, he didn't need the likes of zico etc to back him. up.

Thank you Z, that needed to be said.
What started out as a great thread by Abo has just been wrecked in the last page
Ryder made a great point about Cantona and Best not being in the same
league as Pele and Maradona (who the thread is supposed to be about)
and Abo misunderstood what was said (which is not his fault) , but just dont post
any reply just for the sake of it Abo.:)
Back to Pele and Maradona.........
Im sick of people labelling Maradona a junkie or a druggie *snore*,
its boring. He was the best player to EVER play the game. If you cant
appreciate that you cant be a proper lover of the game.
Yes he took cocaine, yes he got ****ed, yes he ate too much,
but they were hardly performance enhancing activities
and 'cheating' of much description so who really cares? I dont.
I know, I know, its not a great example...blah blah blah.....
but the guy was born to play, he was one of a kind.
What this guy did with a football defied belief. For a small man (5 foot 5)
he had a huge presence both on and off the pitch.
He captained most of his clubs and of course his country to glory
in the World Cup, a competition (and I hate using this phrase) he won
single handedly.
If some of you younger members havent seen him in action then watch these
youtube compilations:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tCoMtPuL3Q&NR=1 -savage vid, watch it all
It shows Maradona the eccentric, mad, crazy genius. Great tune as well ;-)

I read Maradona's autobiography and it was a fantastic read. He is pretty damn
complex to be fair but whatta read.
I started Pele's book and I only read about half......I actually got bored,
which is not trying to take away from Pele's overall greatness.
But having seen Maradona play Im firm in belief that he was the greatest player
of all time, warts and all ;)

I dont like comparing players from diffrent eras but for pure spectacularity I would choose maradona over pele any day. I did not see him live but what ive seen of him is just absolutely amazing. His dribbling ability is just out of this world, Its a shame what has happened to him with the whole addiction problem, but imo he is the best that has ever played the game.

It seems to be human nature to compare things.
How many times have we heard 'Is he the new George Best/Roy Keane/Diego Maradona/Ronaldinho' etc etc?
I've often enjoyed debating with friends (usually in the pub) whether <insert football player> was/is a better player than <insert football player> or whether <insert female celebrity> has a nicer butt than <insert female celebrity>! :D

It is impossible for most to say they have seen them play i myself seen maradona's tale end of a amazing career . But having seen thousands of video's including the pair id go for pele purely for because he lived a clean life scored some amazing goals and didnt get banned for taking drugs . To put maradona up as a role model is bad really however great a player is . If we to look at maybe zidane ' cantona ' stoichkov ' hagi ' beckenbaur , if you were going to put forward idols with problems where the hell was george best!!!

The bit I highlighted is not a good reason as to why Pele was better.
It doesnt make Diego any less of a player. A man, yes, but not as a player.
You mention Zidane, Cantona and Stoichkov, although Im not entirely sure in
what context you meant Faz:confused:
They were all players who had their problems with discipline.....Does that make them good role models?
Headbutting an opponent in the WC final.......?
Jumping into the crowd and kung-fuing some chav.....?(Go Eric:D )
Is that a good thing to do with so many kids watching?
People/Players make mistakes but it doesnt mean they are any less of a
talented player. Zidane and Cantona are 2 of my fave players ever, as is
Maradona, but to use the 'junkie' or 'not clean living' card is irrelevant
in his talents as a baller.

Found this somewhere else.....
Pele shouting his mouth off as usual.......
Pele: Drug-Cheat Maradona Should Have Medals Stripped
Brazilian great Pele has hit out at his archenemy Diego Maradona in a controversial interview, saying that the Argentine legend was not a complete player, and stating that he should have his medals stripped for drug offences.
A favourite debate among football fans has always been who was greater out of Pele and Maradona.
This topic has had extra spice due to the fact that the pair do not get on, and indeed have been at loggerheads for many years.
Both have attacked each other in the press in the past, with Pele often criticising Maradona on moral grounds, while the Argentine has hit out at the Brazilian for being part of FIFA’s “political” family.
Pele has now surely begun another war of words between the two.
"Maradona was an excellent player,” ‘The King’ told Brazilian newspaper ‘O Estado de Sao Paulo’.
“However he could not dribble with his right foot, he couldn’t head the ball. He was not a complete player.
“I liked very much his compatriot Alfredo Di Stefano. He was better than Maradona. He was more complete, he was faster, and he scored more goals.”
Pele once again hit out at Maradona’s drug abuse, and controversially stated that he should have all the medals he won stripped away from him.
"Why did so many Olympic athletes lose their medals when they were found guilty of doping, but not Maradona?” Pele controversially asked.
Maradona had a well-known addiction to cocaine, however he never took performance-enhancing drugs.

hahaha.... I finished Pele's biography, but it WAS boring and I stopped reading Ronaldinho's. I think great Brazilian players, maybe don;t have interesting writers doing their biographies.
I would say that for his dribbling skills it is easier to pronounce Maradona as the best ever, but Pele's finishing ability is amazing.
He had several offers to player overseas, but couldn;t tear himself away from Santos, PLUS at one point he got himself into financial trouble and got a loan from the president of Santos and had to pledge himself to the club by signing another contract.
I've seen Maradona play and he was amazing. I also put him ahead of Pele, but only just.
By the way, after Maradona, I wasn;t entertained by a footballer for a while until I started watching English football and witnessed a young player by the name of Ryan Giggs.
I'm just saying that after Maradona, nobody entertained me when I watched football until I say Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs running down the wing......
*sigh* the good old days.
BTW way, the best super sub of all time is NOT OG Solskjaer it is actually Steven Tan!

For me it all comes down to who I enjoy watching more. In that respect Maradona is better than Pele. George Best, Zinedine Zidane, CANTONA, Scholes, Shevchenko, Brazilian Ronaldo, Davor Suker. It's all about style.
