Getafe-Bayern München (1:1)
Getafe CF will be backed by a full Coliseum Alfonso Pérez when the European debutants welcome FC Bayern München for a UEFA Cup quarter-final tie that is poised at 1-1 thanks to Cosmin Contra's last-minute goal in Bavaria.

Zenit-Bayer (4:1)
FC Zenit St. Petersburg have one foot in the semi-final as they welcome Bayer 04 Leverkusen to the Petrovsky Stadium having won 4-1 at the BayArena in the first leg.

Sporting-Rangers(0:0)
Getting one over a team wearing green and white hoops may have come easily to Rangers FC in their two meetings with Celtic FC this season, yet Sporting Clube de Portugal promise to offer much sterner resistance with a UEFA Cup semi-final place on offer at the José Alvalade on Thursday.

PSV-Fiorentina (1:1)
The ball is in the home side's court as PSV Eindhoven look to seize a UEFA Cup semi-final place after securing a 1-1 draw in the first leg at ACF Fiorentina last week.

I think....Getafe-Bayern München 0-0
Zenit-Bayer 3-1
Sporting-Rangers 1-1
PSV-Fiorentina 2-1

I didn't watch the highlights but the Getafe v Bayern match sounded like an incredible game. 4 goals in extra-time is almost unheard of, especially with a side scoring 2 in the first 3 minutes and the other scoring 2 in the last 5. Very unlucky for Getafe - I guess tiredness may have caught up with them.

Well done to Rangers too. Good to see a British side (British when you win, Scottish when you lose :p ) in the semi's.

FC Bayern München defender Martín Demichelis spoke of his relief at emerging from "a strange match" with ten-man Getafe CF to advance to the UEFA Cup semi-finals. Bayern went through on away goals at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez after the tie finished with an aggregate score of 4-4.

Dramatic ending
"If you're asking me whether we really deserved that, I honestly don't know what to say," Demichelis said after Luca Toni's two late extra-time goals cancelled out those of Getafe's Casquero and Braulio. "The game finished with such a crazy series of incidents. We started so well in Munich last week and Getafe drew level with the last kick of the game. Today, they started by losing a very important player in [Rubén] de la Red but it didn't seem to hurt them so much."

Comeback
The home side had taken the lead in the 44th minute through Cosmin Contra - the Romanian netting for the second time in a week against Bayern - but French international Franck Ribéry levelled late in the second period for the visitors with a volley that sent the tie into extra time. "When we started extra time we were almost immediately two goals down," Demichelis recalled. "Like I said, it was a bizarre series of events, but we managed to pull back level again. Unfortunately one of us had to go out tonight and it was Getafe, even though they did what they had to do very well. But that's football."

Even battle
Stung by questions asking if his team underestimated the side from the Madrid suburbs, the Argentinian responded with a question of his own. "Who said it wasn't going to be difficult? We knew we were up against opponents who were deadly serious in their attempts to qualify. They were a tough team and they showed that. Neither the history of the two teams nor the statistics counted for anything when we took to the field and that's what was proven out there tonight." Bayern, the 1995/96 UEFA Cup winners, will take on FC Zenit St. Petersburg in the semi-finals of the competition on 24 April and 1 May.

Leverkusen 2-4 Zenit 1-4 » 1-0 »
Rangers 2-0 Sporting 0-0 » 2-0 »
Bayern (ag) 4-4 Getafe 1-1 » 3-3 »
Fiorentina 3-1 PSV 1-1 » 2-0 »

Mark van Bommel is doubtful for FC Bayern München's UEFA Cup semi-final first-leg tie on Thursday after fracturing his nose during the club's German Cup win on Saturday against BV Borussia Dortmund.

Extra-time injury
The Dutch midfielder picked up the injury during extra time in Bayern's 2-1 victory after being challenged by Dortmund goalscorer Mladen Petrič. Despite the incident occurring in the 97th minute, the 30-year-old finished the game. However, the club have declared Van Bommel a doubt for the first leg at home to FC Zenit St. Petersburg.

They call them 'Dusel-Bayern'. And another symptom of the alleged lucky Bayern syndrome is that Ottmar Hitzfeld's men go into their biggest test of this UEFA Cup campaign having just experienced a season's high. The task facing FC Zenit St. Petersburg in Thursday's semi-final first leg will be to end FC Bayern München's good moment before it accounts for them too.

High-fliers
Typically, Bayern knockers say, the home side's best form began with a mistake by Getafe CF goalkeeper Pato in that quarter-final epic on 10 April. The error let a forlorn Bayern back into a tie they eventually won on away goals. Subsequently, they have thrashed BV Borussia Dortmund, beaten Eintracht Frankfurt and, last Saturday, lifted the German Cup with an extra-time flourish against Dortmund.

Due warning
Suddenly firing, Bayern are ready to make their own luck again against the Russian champions at the Allianz Arena. If Bayern were caught unawares by Getafe, Spain's European debutants, they have no excuses against Zenit – 4-1 winners at Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the last eight. Coach Hitzfeld said: "We had been warned about Getafe but nobody really knew what to expect. Zenit may also be a novelty, but the fact they defeated Leverkusen means we know what's in front of us. Zenit will be our strongest opponents. They have world-class players and are a new force. We have to stay focused because of their counterattacking threat and must avoid taking risks."

Quadruple
Bayern's fright night in Getafe appears to have had the effect of opening a box of delights for the German club's fans. Their weekend success added the DFB Pokal to the League Cup landed at the start of the season. With the team's ten-point Bundesliga lead suggesting a title procession, the quadruple is on provided Bayern continue the hunt for a second UEFA Cup crown. But they tackle Zenit without the suspended Luca Toni, who has scored two goals in each of the preceding four games. Lukas Podolski should deputise yet Miroslav Klose is doubtful with a foot injury.

No pressure
If the match is "special" for Hitzfeld, being a first European semi-final since the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League, it is also "very important" to Dick Advocaat. Zenit's trainer is glad to take on the Bavarians, saying: "People asked whether I wanted Getafe or Bayern and I said Bayern because we have nothing to lose. We know that against Bayern, they are at home, they have to win, everybody expects them to win, so it is much easier for us to play." According to Advocaat, scalping Leverkusen in Germany remains a source of inspiration. "We scored beautiful goals on the counterattack and can do so again," he said. Confidence also comes from midfielder Anatoliy Tymoschuk's recovery from a thigh complaint, although an injured toe should keep Aleksandr Anyukov sidelined.

Two-faced
The real mystery surrounding Zenit is the contrast between their European and their domestic results – with the Premier-Liga title-holders showing just one victory from their opening six games of 2008. Advocaat explained: "The reason the league isn't going as well as the UEFA Cup is that the pitches in Russia are terrible at the moment and it is difficult for the players to be as motivated." Bayern's misfortune may be to meet them on a good day.

The Russian champions had never beaten German opposition until last month when they ripped up that statistic with a stunning 4-1 success away to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the first leg of their quarter-final.

• If that performance offers grounds for confidence, Zenit will know a tougher test awaits them against the Bundesliga leaders – and tournament favourites – in what is a first European semi-final for Dick Advocaat’s charges.

• Zenit are the only side left in the UEFA Cup never to have won a European trophy. The closest they had previously come since making their continental bow as Zenit Leningrad in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup, was when they reached the quarter-finals of this competition in 2005/06 – losing to eventual winners Sevilla FC 5-2 on aggregate.

• Bayern, by contrast, are playing in their fourth UEFA Cup semi-final. Beaten by Bundesliga rivals Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1979/80 edition, they lost out to SSC Napoli in the 1988/89 semis before defeating FC Barcelona en route to lifting the trophy in 1995/96.

• Goalkeeper Oliver Kahn is the only member of the 1995/96 UEFA Cup-winning squad still active at Bayern, who were led by current Greece coach Otto Rehhagel during that campaign. Jürgen Klinsmann, Lothar Matthäus, Jean-Pierre Papin and Mehmet Scholl were among the other stars of that team.

• Bayern's Luca Toni struck twice in extra time against Getafe CF in the quarter-finals to take them through and raise his tally to ten goals in this campaign. Zenit's Pavel Pogrebnyak has eight goals and is second behind Toni in the tournament scoring chart.

• Toni will sit out this first leg after picking up yellow cards in both quarter-final matches against Getafe to earn his second suspension of this season's UEFA Cup.

• Bayern's Philipp Lahm, Lukas Podolski and Mark van Bommel are within a booking of a suspension.

• Zenit players Aleksandr Anyukov, Andrei Arshavin, Ivica Križanac, Pogrebnyak, Fernando Ricksen and Radek Širl are also one caution away from a ban. Anyukov is unlikely to play against Bayern, however, after breaking a toe.

• Bayern have played 12 games against Russian opposition, winning six, drawing five and losing just one.

• At home, their record is W3 D2 L1. That sole defeat was a 1-0 reverse against FC Lokomotiv Moskva in the first leg of a 1995/96 UEFA Cup first-round tie. Undeterred, they won the return 5-0, with Klinsmann – who takes over as Bayern coach in the summer – scoring twice.

• Bayern's last two home matches against Russian visitors ended in four-goal victories. They beat FC Spartak Moskva 5-1 in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League first group stage, then overcame the same side 4-0 in the 2006/07 group stage.

• Bayern’s six previous games in Russia have all been in Moscow – against Lokomotiv, FC Torpedo Moskva and FC Spartak Moskva. They have claimed three wins and three draws in the Russian capital.

• Zenit have played against German opponents on eight occasions and their record reads W1 D2 L5. They have fared better in away matches, curiously. On German soil, they have won one, drawn two and lost one; at home they have drawn one and lost three.

• They have played three games against Bundesliga teams already this term, and can take heart from their tremendous effort against Leverkusen in the quarter-finals.

• Having drawn 2-2 at home to 1. FC Nürnberg in the group stage, Zenit won 4-1 at Leverkusen on 3 April through goals from Arshavin, Pogrebnyak, Anyukov and Igor Denisov. A 1-0 second-leg loss failed to deny them a semi-final meeting with Bayern.

• Zenit may also gain encouragement from Bayern’s mixed home form so far in the competition. Ottmar Hitzfeld’s men have registered three wins, two draws and one defeat in Munich, while Zenit’s record on the road is two wins, one draw and three defeats.

• Bayern and Zenit have never met before but Bayern coach Hitzfeld and his Zenit counterpart Advocaat will be renewing acquaintances at the Fußball Arena München.

• The pair lined up in opposite dugouts when Hitzfeld’s Bayern faced Advocaat’s Rangers FC in the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League group stage. Bayern drew 1-1 at Ibrox in the first encounter, with Michael Tarnat cancelling out Jörg Albertz's opener. The German side then triumphed 1-0 at home, Thomas Strunz scoring from the penalty spot. Kahn played for Bayern in that second match but not the first.

• Advocaat spent six months coaching Bundesliga club VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 2004/05 season before resigning. Bayern forward Jan Schlaudraff was one of the Dutchman’s charges during that campaign.

• Bayern midfielder Van Bommel played under Advocaat with the Netherlands between 2002 and 2004. However, he missed out on a place at the finals of UEFA EURO 2004™ through injury.

• Now 60, Advocaat was a midfielder for ADO Den Haag, VVV Venlo, Roda JC, Sparta Rotterdam and FC Utrecht before moving into coaching and working as assistant to legendary Netherlands coach Rinus Michels.

• Advocaat has been in charge of the Netherlands twice, and has won domestic league titles in three countries: with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Rangers in Scotland and now Zenit in Russia.

• At 59, Bayern coach Hitzfeld was a decent striker with FC Basel 1893, VfB Stuttgart, FC Lugano and FC Luzern. However, he proved to be an even better coach, winning eight league championships in total with Grasshopper-Club, BV Borussia Dortmund and Bayern, and the UEFA Champions League with both of his German clubs.

• This season will be the last of his second spell at Bayern, as he will take up a new role as coach of Switzerland after UEFA EURO 2008™.

• Bayern's Daniel Van Buyten and Zenit's Nicolas Lombaerts are international team-mates in the Belgium defence. The 30-year-old Van Buyten has won 43 caps while 23-year-old Lombaerts has four to date.

• Bayern opened their campaign by defeating CF Os Belenenses in the first round and then topped Group F with a record of W2 D2 L0. They subsequently reached the semi-finals by overcoming Aberdeen FC, RSC Anderlecht and Getafe and, with 32 goals scored and 14 conceded, are by far the highest-scoring side left in the competition.

• Zenit have had the longest journey to the last four of all the semi-finalists, having entered the competition in the second qualifying round. After ousting FC ViOn Zlaté Moravce and R. Standard de Liège, Zenit came third in Group A (W1 D2 L1), then beat Villarreal CF, Olympique de Marseille and Leverkusen to advance to this stage.

Bayern Munich 1-1 Zenit St. Petersburg

Zenit St Petersburg have given themselves a huge opportunity to reach their first ever UEFA Cup final by holding Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena this evening.

Frank Ribery had given the Germans the lead with a rebounded penalty in a first half largely dominated by the more experienced and accomplished Bayern side.

Dick Advocaat rallied his troops at the half-time break however, and Zenit produced a genuinely first-rate second half showing. Andrei Arshavin and Viktor Fayzulin were at the heart of all the Russians attacking play and it was the latter’s left wing cross on the our that forced the hitherto imperious Lucio into an own goal.

The Brazilian headed past the hapless Oliver Kahn who himself was replaced through injury shortly after. The veteran may be now doubtful for the return leg in Russia.

The visitors pegged their hosts back as the game progressed but the ever lively Frank Ribery provided a palpable threat every time he had possession. He was let down however, by mis-firing team-mates as Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski struggled to impose themselves on the encounter.

Podolski missed a glorious chance in injury time as he skewed wide after Lucio’s free-kick but ultimately, Zenit did enough to give themselves a fighting chance in the return leg at home.

First-Half

Zenit’s indifferent league form has been the reason for much consternation around the club of late and the Russians did not do much to help transform their fortunes in the first half.

For long periods throughout the opening period, they were simply limp and their play was leaden -footed. Unwilling to commit forward in open play, Dick Advocaat’s side were reduced to low stake gambles at set-pieces.

Even at that, Bayern looked like picking off their guests whenever the numerical advantage was in their favour or even.

Anatoliy Tymoschuk established Zenit’s approach to their fleet-flooted hosts as soon as the first minute when he clattered Mark Van Bommel prompting the games first stoppage.

Frank Ribery was in scintillating form throughout, the Frechman made life exceedingly difficult for the experienced Fernando Ricksen who relied on Igor Denisov to assist in nullifying the winger, to little avail.

The twinkle-toed assassin was available at every opportunity to provide a clever flick or intelligent pass. He provided both for Ze Roberto on 28 minutes but the Brazilian could not find the requisite deftness to lift his shot past Malafeev.

Ten minutes prior however, and it was Ze Roberto who gave Bayern the chance to take the lead. The midfielder was hacked to the ground by Ricksen before Ribery beat Malafeev from the follow-up to his unsuccessful penalty.

Bayern could and probably should have racked up more than one goal, but their finishing was wayward - Bastian Schweinsteiger and Miroslav Klose being unable to find requisite dexterity in front of goal.

Second-Half

Zenit emerged a team transformed for the second half. Seemingly buoyed by their illustrious hosts’ inability to put their game out of their reach, the Russians set about pegging back Bayern from the first whistle of the period.

Confidence ebbed through veins that had been lacking a tangible pulse during the first half as an increasingly flustered Bayern relied on Lucio and Martin Demichelis to keep the away side at bay.

Phillip Lahm was culpable of positional misdemeanours as Fayzulin became increasingly involved. He fired wide in space on 52 minutes after Schweinsteiger was off target with what could be described, in light of the visitors dominance in possession, as a counter attack.

It was the same player who provide a wicked cross on the hour to force Lucio into the same mistake as John Arne Riise had made 48 hours previously.

Fayzulin reached the by-line and produced a dangerous cross that Lucio stooped to head beyond the helpless Oliver Kahn. The veteran goalkeeper saw his evening cut short not long after as a groin injury saw him replaced by deputy Michael Rensing.

Anatoliy Tymoschuk went close immediately after as the hosts were on the rack. Experience looked like a hinderance as Mark Van Bommel and Ze Roberto found themselves increasingly out of puff from chasing around capable and tidy footballers in the shape of Feyzulin, Arshavin et al.

It was Ze Roberto who managed to scramble clear when Fayzulin breached a flimsy rear guard with ten minutes to play. Rensing was inept in his handling as the Russians scrambled inside the Bayern area, luckily the Brazilian was on hand to boot clear.

The home side chased a winner as the game edged towards its pulsating climax, permitting the teams to slug out the contest at either end. Consecutively, Arshavin whizzed tow long range volleys narrowly wide before Podolski had the best opportunity to snatch the victory.

Lucio, auxiliary captain, striker and dead-ball expert fired a free kick into the area, it ping-ponged its way to Podolski who skewed wide with his less-favoured right foot.

The value of the away goal cannot be stated for Advocaat’s side. On this showing, it was no more than they deserved. Bayern will be made to lick their wounds but will be inspired by the returing Luca Toni in the second leg to boost a listless attack.

Line-Ups:

Bayern Munich (4-4-2): Kahn (Rensing 66‘)- Lahm (Kroos 80‘), Jansen, Demichelis, Lucio - Ze Roberto, Van Bommel, Schweinsteiger (Lell 65‘), Ribery - Klose, Podolski.

FC Zenit St. Petersburg (4-4-2): Malafeev - Ricksen, Krizanac, Shirokov, Sirl - Zyrianov, Tymoschuk, Denisov, Fayzulin - Arshavin, Pogrebnyak.

Glasgow Rangers 0-0 AC Fiorentina

Glasgow Rangers and AC Fiorentina played out a dreadfully dismal goalless draw in the first leg of their UEFA Cup semi-final tie at Ibrox, a game in which neither side created a decent chance of note.

Rangers Coach Walter Smith had real selection problems going into this game as captain Barry Ferguson and Kevin Thomson were suspended, while Andy Webster, Charlie Adam, Chris Burke, Steven Naismith, Lee McCulloch and DaMarcus Beasley were out injured. Neil Alexander started in goal for his first European appearance for the club in place of the sidelined Allan McGregor.

Fiorentina were handed a massive boost when Czech defender Tomas Ujfalusi passed a late fitness test, but they were without Marco Donadel and Daniele Cacia, due to suspension and injury respectively.

First-Half

Fiorentina made a bright start to the game, dominating possession, and Martin Jorgensen strode forward from right back and fired well over from 30 yards.

Adrian Mutu found space just outside the area and hit a left foot snapshot, but it was easy for Alexander. Giampaolo Pazzini then looked destined to score as Zdravko Kuzmanovic nodded the ball on to him just six yards out, but Carlos Cuellar made a superb goal-saving tackle.

It took until the 15th minute for Rangers to make any inroad into Fiorentina territory as Jean-Claude Darcheville left Alessandro Gamberini for dead, but his cross was gathered by Sebastien Frey.

Steven Whittaker then pounced on a misplaced Kuzmanovic pass, and slashed a shot wide from outside the area. Riccardo Montolivo did the same down the other end with the aid of a deflection.

Jorgensen was bombing forward at every opportunity, and he cut inside from the right and stung Alexander's palms with a well-struck effort.

Mutu came to life on the half-hour mark, bursting through the heart of the Rangers defence, and he would have been through on goal were it not for Pazzini’s weak return pass. The Romanian then deliberately handled the ball trying to head in a Kuzmanovic cross, and he was perhaps fortunate to escape a yellow card that would have ruled him out of the second leg.

Fiorentina continued to dominate possession, and Kuzmanovic was the next to try his luck with a low shot that flashed wide.

Five minutes before the break Mario Alberto Santana thought he was in on goal, but Alexander was quick off his line.

Second-Half

Into the second half and Frey also had to be alert to sweep up Kirk Broadfoot’s raking pass before it reached Nacho Novo. Novo also tried to catch Frey off his line from fully 40 yards, but his effort was well over.

Rangers were now having their best spell of the match, but they were still creating desperately little. Novo then had a rush of blood, slicing horribly wide in a promising attacking position.

On the hour mark Walter Smith tried to freshen up his team, replacing both Novo and Darcheville for Thomas Buffel and Daniel Cousin.

These substitutions didn't have the desired effect as Fiorentina began to have more of the ball again. On 75 minutes Mutu had the best attempt of what had been a truly dismal game with a 35-yard free-kick that Alexander dived low to his right to save.

Christian Vieri was unleashed off the bench for the final 10 minutes, and with his first touch fired a deflected free-kick over the bar.

The closing stages of the match were played out with virtually no incident, although Mutu did miss his kick inside the area in injury time.

The tie remains in the balance ahead of next week's second leg in Florence, even if Fiorentina will be the favourites to go through to the final.

Line-Ups:

Glasgow Rangers (4-4-2): Alexander, Broadfoot, Weir, Cuellar, Papac, Whittaker, Dailly, Hemdani, Davis, Novo (Buffel 59), Darcheville (Cousin 59)

AC Fiorentina (4-4-2): Frey, Jorgensen, Gamberini, Ujfalusi, Gobbi, Kuzmanovic, Liverani, Montolivo, Santana, Pazzini (Vieri 80), Mutu

FC Bayern Munchen striker Miroslav Klose must undergo surgery after breaking his nose in three places during Thursday's draw against FC Zenit St. Petersburg.

Soldiered on
The 29-year-old German international battled on to the end of the game after being injured in a tackle a few minutes from time, but has now been ruled out of the Bundesliga game at home to VfB Stuttgart on Sunday. He may also miss the second leg of the UEFA Cup semi-final against Zenit at the Petrovsky Stadium next Thursday. Bayern have additional worries, with goalkeeper Oliver Kahn replaced midway through the second half against Zenit with a trapped nerve in his back, while defender Philipp Lahm is struggling with a groin muscle problem.

Where are ya Zenitka???
Did you go to the match?
You must be one happy lady :)
I dont think anyone can believe Zenit whooped Bayern 4-0.
Unlucky that your striker got a yellow and will be suspended for the final.
Isnt he the top scorer in the competition? The manager should have taken
him off at 4-0 up

Fiorentina 0-0 Rangers (0-0)
Rangers win 4-2 on penalties

Zenit St Petersburg 4 - 0 Bayern Munich

Rangers go to their first European final since they lifted the Cup-Winners' Cup in 1972.

Rangers follow Dick Advocaat to the City of Manchester Stadium on 14 May, the former Ibrox boss having earlier led Zenit St Petersburg to their first European final with a 5-1 aggregate hammering of Bayern Munich.

Good call. Blue for the Waffa though, and Red for the European Cup. Good luck to them at the council house!
