Yeah I think its hard to pick the winner here since Detroit have more experience and been in this situation many times. Pittsburgh got the young enthusiasm and hunger. Maybe a 50-50 situation. It'll be interesting to follow the finals.

Battle one of seven in the Stanley Cup:
Detroit - Pittsburgh 4-0
Mikael Samuelsson 2, Daniel Cleary and Henrik Zetterberg.
This is what happens in play off hockey so often. Big guns have a quiet evening and new stars are born. Early in the playoff Detroits Johan Franzen was smoking hot. He scored hattricks and were leading the forces. It wasnt Datsyuk, Zetterberg or captain Lidström who got the headlines. Franzen's been out with an unknown illness and final game 1 another 'unknown' game winner steps forward.
Whats worrying for Pittsburgh, Crosby and Malkin very quiet. 7 shots in the last 40 minutes. No wonder its hard to score. But im sure the Penguins will raise again. This isnt over yet!

It was the two best teams in the final yes. But without Nabokov Russia would be knocked. Poor and injured goalies, then it wouldnt matter what on the back of the other players shirts.

4 nill against bronze medalists, yes and the very same team who only won 3-2 against the team who got beaten by the very same bronze medalists. The winner was scored with less then six seconds left of the game. Thats against a team who played 50 minutes with only four defenders and a right winger as defender as off loading guy.

Maybe we can say the puck bounced the right way for Russia. And in Quebec you really can say the puck bounded a lot. :D

PITTSBURGH – The Stanley Cup is returning to “Hockeytown!”

The Detroit Red Wings, stunned to have lost Game 5 at home in triple overtime, played a perfect road game Wednesday night at Mellon Arena, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-2, in Game 6 of the 2008 Stanley Cup Final to go wire-to-wire as the best team in the National Hockey League this season.

“It's never easy,” Wings goalie Chris Osgood said. “Toughest trophy in sports to win; it lives for that name every year, that nickname. It was difficult, again. Pittsburgh is a great young team … gave us all we could handle. Probably one of the most difficult series I've played in a while. They have a talented team. They held on right to the end again. They kept pushing us still.”

Henrik Zetterberg was named the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the postseason and defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom became the first European captain to lift the Stanley Cup aloft.

“It felt great being the first guy to touch the Cup on our team,” the classy Lidstrom said. “Otherwise it felt the same as winning the previous ones, where you're so happy with the end result. You start training camp with a goal, and that is to win the Stanley Cup.

Henrik Zetterberg complete!

Larry Wigge saluts the Conn Smythe Trophy winner.

Zetterberg's complete game helped Wings to Cup

We've seen the him dazzle opponents with his stickwork and speed. We've marveled at his ability to do so many things at a fast pace, always on the move. From a distance, the 27-year-old center is magic. But there's much, much more to the abracadabra act we see from Henrik Zetterberg on the ice – and there's also more than the disheveled blond hair and unshaven look of a surfer.

Too small. Too this. Too that. That's what scouts said of the skinny kid from Njurunda, Sweden. He paid the price back then by having to wait until the seventh round before the Detroit Red Wings picked him with the 210th pick in the 1999 Entry Draft. Heck, for six weeks when he was 17, Zetterberg, wondering about his hockey future, actually took a part-time job cleaning lanes at a bowling alley.

But after getting a chance to lift the Stanley Cup in celebration Wednesday night at Mellon Arena following Detroit's 3-2 victory and its first NHL championship since 2002 and fourth in the last 11 seasons, Zetterberg saw all of his emotions gush out after a game in which he had one goal and one assist, six shots and two hits. His pass, made while he was being taken to the ice, set up Brian Rafalski for the game's first goal at 5:03 on a power play and gave the team a quick start. His goal 7:36 into the third period turned out to be the Cup winner.

Zetterberg's two goals and four assists in the six-game final series gave him 27 points in the playoffs. That enabled him to break a club record of 24 points previously shared by Sergei Fedorov (1995) and Steve Yzerman (1998) and tied him with Sidney Crosby for the most in the Playoffs. He went home with the Conn Smythe Trophy as Playoff MVP.

"He can pass and he can shoot at an elite level. That's what makes him so difficult to stop, because you don’t know what he’s going to do," teammate and fellow Swede Nicklas Lidstrom said. "Seeing that kind of skill coming at you again and again makes defenders back off and creates openings for his teammates."

But the brilliance of Zetterberg is that he can do so many things to help the Red Wings win: one goal, eight shots, one hit, one blocked shot in Game 1; one assist, six shots, one takeaway, one blocked shot in Game 2; three shots, one blocked shot in Game 3; two shots, one takeaway, two blocked shots in Game 4; two assists, seven shots, two takeaways in Game 5.

"The first thing on my mind is that great players aren't judged on one play, one series or even one full season or career performance. It's all about lifting the Stanley Cup. That's all that I really wanted since I saw my first Stanley Cup Final when I was 13 or 14. When I saw the greatest players in the world celebrate winning by raising the Cup high into the air, I knew it was something I wanted to do," Zetterberg excitedly explained in front of a horde of reporters. "To me, this is a defining moment for anyone who strives to be the best. And doing it with this group of guys, battling through four series, has been real special."

"Henrik, he's a complete player," Red Wings GM Ken Holland said. "He's got great hands, great instincts, he's great in traffic and he really sees the ice well. Over the years I've seen a lot of great players who don't work hard enough to be better. I always tell our scouts, 'Tell me when a smaller guy shows you he can do it and when a bigger guy shows you he can't. It’s clear Henrik always plays bigger than his size."

Still, it was another side of this brilliant center's game that was just as important: For most of the six-game series, Zetterberg was playing head-up against Sidney Crosby, who was not nearly as productive as he had been earlier in the Playoffs. The exclamation point in the series for Zetterberg came during a tense 86-second span late in the third period of Game 4 with Detroit holding on to a 2-1 lead and the Penguins pressing to tie the game and the series.

In those important seconds, Zetterberg made three individual plays, the kind that don't show up on a score sheet – none more crucial than what looked like a sure goal by Crosby, who was waiting to push the puck into the net while stationed at the edge of the goal crease. Instead, Zetterberg first reached to get his stick on the cross-crease pass and then used some of his soccer upbringing to kick it out of harm's way. In that same brilliant sequence, Zetterberg blocked a shot and lugged the puck into the Pittsburgh zone, killing more than 15 seconds of valuable time.

"I knew the importance of that PK," Zetterberg said, with particular emphasis on that in retrospect after the series. "I knew who was out on the ice for them. It was our job to keep them from getting a good shot on goal. It was up to me to do my job."

He did it like a shutdown cornerback in the NFL or a great defensive catcher blocking the plate to prevent the tying run from scoring in the bottom of the ninth.

"The game was in the balance and Z went out there and single-handedly killed it off," gushed teammate Dan Cleary.

"It was interesting. I was thinking of lacrosse at that time," coach Mike Babco.ck said after that game. "I always hear my son's coach yelling when they're shorthanded 'get a hold of it and hang onto it.' That's what he was doing."

Just another part of the all-round game that makes Zetterberg so great, right coach?

"I've been telling people for three years how good Zetterberg is," Babco.ck continued. "And so this isn't a surprise to me. He's just a conscientious good two-way player."

"He's so good at reading plays, anticipating where the puck is going," Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "He makes it tough for them to find passing lanes and find someone open. He fills the lanes, blocks shots and then when he gets the puck he can hang onto it too, like he did for 10-15 seconds."

Not many NHL stars can play the two-way game that Zetterberg and linemate Pavel Datsyuk can.

"Before this series began, I looked at them and remembered that Zetterberg and Datsyuk were both up for the Selke Trophy (honoring the best defensive forward in the NHL)," said Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik, expressing a little reluctance to praise their defensive talent. "But then to see them against guys like Sid (Crosby) and Geno (Malkin) and you can see just how good they are both ways.

"With Zetterberg, he's really patient and strong stick and protects the puck so well. He's the kind of hockey player you appreciate because of how hard he works for the team, offensively and defensively."

It's that kind of effort that makes Zetterberg special, even to his own teammates.

"That's where he stands out from other superstars in this league," Johan Franzen said. "He can play so well in his own end, he can play on a 3 on 5. You don't see other superstars do that, not a lot of them, anyway. That's what makes him so special."

To give you an idea of how Zetterberg dominated offensively before this series, consider that he had five goals and three assists in Detroit's four-game sweep of Colorado in the second round of the Playoffs. He followed that with four goals and four assists in six games against Dallas.

"He's got such a strong stick," Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis added. "You can't take the puck away from him."

One of the other things Zetterberg remembered in retrospect after the Cup victory was his first real battle on the world stage against NHL competition.

"I remember going on the ice for the first time to take a faceoff at the Olympics in Salt Lake City and when I looked up, there was Eric Lindros standing across from me," Zetterberg said. "I must have been giving him five inches and about 40 pounds in that matchup. That opened my eyes. It gave me something to work on before I played my first game in the NHL the next season. I knew I had to get bigger and stronger."

Also ...

"I just missed the Red Wings’ Stanley Cup run in 2002," he said, explaining how he and Niklas Kronwall were brought in to watch two games but did not play. "I had been hoping I could find a place right there at the top with the Olympics for a chance to lift the Stanley Cup in victory. I've got that now ..."

He smiled for a second and then added wistfully, "The only thing left is for me to win a Swedish Elite League title. But that will come sometime after I'm finished winning a couple more of these, I hope."

When watching Zetterberg, you quickly notice the hands, the quick feet, the ability to create while at top speed, the instincts. But what stands out most is Zetterberg's consistency, strength and work ethic.

"You're never going to outwork Hank, that's for sure," Babco.ck said.

Not when Zetterberg had this little job of lifting the Stanley Cup that he dreamed of raising a long time ago back in Sweden.

The Dominator" is done dominating.

Dominik Hasek, who earned his nickname by being one of the best goalies on the planet throughout the 1990s and into the new millennium, announced Monday morning at a news conference in Detroit that he is retiring from the NHL for the second time.

The 43-year-old Czech netminder also retired after winning the Stanley Cup in 2002, but returned after skipping just one season. He indicated Monday that this time his decision to retire is firm and there will be no more dramatic returns to the League.

A legend retires...

Dominik Hasek has retired for the third time so far. This time it seems to be definite. I just hope he won't be playing roller skate hockey again!!! :D It just puts dark clouds on his career..

I remember how he were the back up goalie at Blackhawks and got transfered to Sabres where he got his big break and even brought the shot stopping to another level. I wasnt a big Hasek fan but no matter what, he did his job.

He is quite good - so far he is the only goalie, who has won the Hart trophy 2 times.

I only remember him playing for Buffalo and Detroit...he's maybe the best European goalie so far...

He was always our first choice - he is experienced, successful coach AND has excellent relations with players (including the older ones, who had not wanted to play under the previous coach Hadamczik)

From today, there are lots of superb hockeyists who still don't have contracts for the upcoming season and who therefore became free players.

Among the others:

Jaromir Jagr, Joe Sakic, Sergej Fjodorov, Mats Sundin, Peter Forsberg, Mike Peca, Markus Näslund, Brendan Shanahan, Andrew Brunette, Marian Hossa, Teemu Selänne, Wade Redden, Oleg Tverdovskij, Jose Theodore.

This could be the line up for an All Star Game:)

From this list there are a few of them who might retire from the game. Sundin is one who could retire but I think he'll play another season or two, Peter Forsberg is another one who might retire because of all his injuries.
Teemu Selänne will probably retire ..or will he continue playing for the Ducks?:) Jagr have gotten a $uper deal from Avantgard Omsk in the Russian league and maybe the two Russians (Tverdovski is born Ukrainian) might move back home to the rich Russian league.

There are rumours that Sundin might play with Jagr in Rangers (Jagr's long-time hockey friend Martin Straka has moved to Pilsen, Czech Rep recently). Jagr still prefers playing in NHL, although he really liked his spell in Russia.
Maybe P. Forsberg will play in Sweden?

I mentioned Tverdovski because his blade shape and angulation is my favourite one :D (along with Sakic's).

Well..the Swedish players future is very unsure. I guess all is waiting for a big $ offer..besides Forsberg. Well maybe him too.:)

His feets is killing him and have kept him from hockey for most of last season and have been a plague for him for the last 4-5 years.
He havent given a good hint yet about his future but I think he still hope to play in NHL next season or retire. Last season I think most of us here in Sweden thought Forsberg would play for his home town team Modo but he made it clear that if he wanted to play in NHL and not in Sweden. He even thought of retire if he couldnt play again. Thats why I dont think he'll be playing in Sweden ever again. Which is sad, he deserves to get a chance to win a domestic title to be amongst the big guys when it comes to win titles. The domestic trophy here in Sweden, World Championship, Olympic Gold and winning the Stanley Cup.

Sundin said just a few days ago he's condidering a move to Montreal. At least there's been a contact and what I understod even a contract suggestion from the Canadiens. But he also said its not 100% sure he'll play next season. He will take a few weeks off to get a rest and think about the future. Playing in Sweden isnt an option if you ask me. If he's not playing for Canadiens or Rangers which also is an option I think Sundin will retire. Remember he's born 1971 so he's 37 and I think he can see the end of his career coming closer. Its his way he talks about the future and talking to the family first, that makes me think so.
Im not sure what the Maple Leaf fans think of him moving to Montreal to play for them. Maybe Mats will be forgiven if he make the 'impossible' move to the rivals. The rivalry between the two teams/cities have been massive in the history. How do they feel in Toronto to see their capitan play in the wrong shirt? But he got the biggest recognition a player in NHL can get by getting the 'give him a chance to win the cup, by trading him to a better team'-go ahead by the Maple Leafs fans.

I heard Markus Näslund have sold the house in Vancouver so one can assume he wont stay there. Where he'll end up I dont know. He's greedy so I dont care about him. He was once seen as a better player then Peter Forsberg.:D

Uh...the Stanley Cup Champions have signed the Slovak Marian Hossa. They are getting even more tools in the tool-box. They are serious about defending their title. :D

Scary!

Now we know where his next destination is...Markus Näslund signs for NY Rangers. He got a two year contract.

All Jágr wants is a 2-year deal. Then he'll presumably go back to the Czech Republic.

I heard Montreal is interested - and they have money, because M. Sundin is not likely to come to Montreal.

Last statement by Sundin is that he wants time to make his mind up. A $20M deal over two years with Canucks was turned down. Is that a hint that he'll retire.

Mike Sillinger got an odd record in NHL btw...

Hes been playing for 12 clubs (so far). He got drafted by Detroit Red Wings and have since then played for Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators, New York Islanders.

Jaromír Jágr has just been transfered to Avantgard Omsk. It's a 2-year deal with 1-year option. I wish him best luck in Russia, but I'm sad he won't enlarge his record in NHL.

Not very surprising that he moves to the Russian league.

NHL with salary cap and the signing of Näslund (even if he had to accept a wage drop) and the other rumours around the club it'll be expensive to keep a happy Jagr at MSG.

I hope we'll be able to watch some of the games from the Russian league again the forthcoming season here in Sweden. It'll be interesting to see all the Swedes, Finns and Czechs that has moved there to earn a last fat pay check before hanging up the skates.
