last time the two teams met the scores were level at 1-1(although sunderland were the better team throughout)

Roy Keane spoke out after his side’s tepid 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James Park and admitted that the Sunderland site were simply not good enough to claim a victory in the Tyne-Wear derby clash tonight.

Keane’s side conceded goals at the start and end of the first half to leave them effectively beaten at half-time.

Sunderland had been bereft of a number of starters but Keane refused to use that as an excuse even though it was the replacements of Phillip Bardsley and Johnny Evans who made the critical errors in defence.

First, Paul McShane at right-back, was not close enough to prevent Michael Owen’s opener and then Danny Higginbotham handled inside the six yard box to facilitate Owen’s second goal from the penalty spot.

Keane lamented the fact that in his opinion, he had the personnel to take a reward from the game but ultimately went a long way to contributing to their own defeat.

He said: “We were okay but we know okay is not good enough.

"We gave two bad goals away. We got better in the second half but the game was probably over at half-time.

"We lost three players this week but you can't make excuses like that. I thought we were strong enough to get a result but we gave them a helping hand in terms of goals we gave away.”
