As Ryan Giggs celebrated his 750th appearance against Middlesbrough on Sunday, his performance was rapped by a minority of United fans who are now calling for the Welsh wizard to be dropped.
Angry fans contacted MUTV (http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=%7B972A2022-0D34-4D8E-880B-EAA2369D4FE4%7D)'s phone-in with Viv Anderson and Lou Macari to vent their anger.
One MUTV caller said: "I do not see what Ryan Giggs brings to the side at the moment."
Another insisted that "Giggs is not worth playing as he's not a threat anymore."
Keen to support one of United's greatest ever players, Anderson and Macari lept to the defence of winger.
Former United defender Viv Anderson said: "I still think Ryan Giggs is a threat at all times."
Giggs is just nine games away from equalling Sir Bobby Charlton's all time record of 759 appearances.
What do you think about the reaction from certain sectors of the United faithful? Is it justified? Is Sir Alex Ferguson picking Giggsy on merit or for sentimental reasons?
Ji-Sung Park started against Roma last week and after a poor start demonstrated the qualities that persuaded to flash the Glazer's cheque book. Is Park the new Giggs?

its awful to see him being hauled off at half time like that!! he's in a terrible run of form but I know Giggsy's still capable of top performances!

He's lost something alright and isn't as big a threat as he used to.
Mark him by getting in and hitting him hard because that will put him out of the game.
Still thing he has a role in the team although his age is starting to show.....
Another season at most to me before "he" calls it a day

Giggs is on 745 appearances now and only has 15 left to beat Sir Bobby Charlton's record of 759. Therefore Giggsy will become the record holder for most apps this season and should retire with dignity left because we want to remember Giggs for the great things he's done. The more he plays he just looks worse each time and its not nice to have to hear people slagging him off after every game. Instead of just being a has been player he could get a coaching role at the club helping bring on young players in the situation he was once in. Then he would still play a part but off field.
At present he does not look like he deserves a place in the United starting line-up ahead of Park Ji-Sung, let alone Nani, when the Portuguese youngster is fit.
Ferguson's patience with the winger seems to be running out judging by his barracking of Giggs from the technical area when the Welshman failed to read a clever chest-pass from Park, but will he have the heart to leave him out in the season's biggest games? Such a decision could play a role in how many trophies, if any, United pick up this season.

I knew some would question me but still, I deliberately left it like that. No, but that's what I've posted in other forums community before. (I'm a registered member at 4 football forums currently) So, I'm just copy-and-pasting without making any corrections at all, because as a lazy git myself, I simply couldn't be arsed to do so. ;)

It is sad to see giggs playing so poorly like he has been in recent games. But in so many of our games,he has been a major figure to look to.Last season,he played a major role in helping us win the title.I still have faith in him but he got to find back his form.

still can calm gs comming on from the bench but when a match is frantic he doesnt get a kick this is why park or tevez should take his shirt for wednesday at the nou camp, i mean messi or eto'o in a straight sprint with giggsy could instantly put us majorly on the back foot, i think fergie can see he's our weaklink thats why he took him off at half time ... maybe nani isn't tactically aware enough yet so park has to start for me

I think those people are idiots - it should be dealt with "inside the house" - those people shouldn't have gone to TV to slate him. We are not blind - we all see that he has lost his touch ( although I don't know how is that possible. you lose speed and pace with age but he lost his touch also ) but as I said - we must chose the words wisely when talking about a legend. I would say that Giggs needs to be rested more often. He is the best left winger of all time FFS !

Ryan Giggs says being criticised does not bother him after being singled out by a number of Manchester United fans.
The 34-year-old midfielder has been targeted by some boo boys with The Red Devils recently dropping points at Middlesbrough and Blackburn.
Giggs thinks that maybe being at Old Trafford for so long may be part of the reason, however, as long as he is being picked by Sir Alex Ferguson he will not be too hard on himself.
"Getting criticism is part of being a Manchester United player. It doesn't bother me," he told The Sun.
"I don't know why I'm singled out. Maybe it's because I've been around so long.
Impress
"But the one person I have to impress is the manager - and while he is picking me, I know I am good enough."
Giggs is contracted to United until the summer of 2009 and he will review his situation then before deciding whether to prolong his successful stay with the Premier League giants.
The former Wales international has admitted he may then call time on his illustrious career if he does not feel he is contributing in big games for the club.
"I think I've another year. I will review it at the end of my current contract, which has a year to run," he continued.
"Then I will see if I am still having an impact on big games." Ryan Giggs says being criticised does not bother him after being singled out by a number of Manchester United fans.

One of the most monotonously repeated statistics of Manchester United’s season so far is that of the Red Devils are yet to taste defeat with Wayne Rooney in their side, and how the team seem to fair so badly when the Liverpudlian is not on Sir Alex Ferguson’s team sheet.
However, an equally as important, but far more overlooked aspect of the Red Devil’s campaign can be found when one looks beyond the galvanising effect of their livewire no. 10, or indeed the 38 goals that the magnificent Cristiano Ronaldo has managed to notch up.
Rather than looking at the headline stealing contribution of these two players, those who seek to delve a bit deeper in to their analysis of the key factors that have shaped the way that Manchester United’s season has progressed should be fixing their gaze on the role of two of club’s most senior players.
For when one looks at the contributions of veteran midfielders Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, there can be little doubt that these once great players now only serve to hamper this vibrant, young Manchester United team when they are selected.
Living Legends?
Sadly for those who rightfully respect all that these legends of the game have achieved, the downwards slide of this pair has been on show from the moment that this season commenced, with the early weeks of the campaign seeing Giggs and Scholes struggling to impose themselves in an environment such as the Premiership of today that holds not exemplary technique as a key requisite, but rather brute force and raw physicality.
Indeed, many observers point to the October injury of Paul Scholes being a turning point in United’s season, as this freed up space for the breakthrough star of this year’s Premiership, Anderson, to come to prominence at the heart of the Red Devil’s midfield. The boundless energy and skill of Portuguese wide man Nani, and the return to fitness of South Korean metronome Ji-Sung Park in January, has also proved to be a world away from the tired legs now on show from United’s once flying winger, Ryan Giggs.
There have been a number of examples of the contrasts present in the United squad being exhibited in recent weeks, with the sorry sight of Paul Scholes chasing the shadows of the athletic Arsenal midfield contributing to the Gunners early dominance in the proceedings at Old Trafford just over a week ago. In this game, it took the 60th minute introduction of the Brazilian powerhouse Anderson to see the Red Devils finally exert any control over their exuberant opposition, and claim an invaluable 2-1 victory.
If we fast forward to last Saturday’s trip to Blackburn Rovers, a frankly terrible Ryan Giggs was substituted at half time by Sir Alex Ferguson, after spending forty five minutes failing to beat Australian full back Brett Emerton for either pace or guile. This was by no means a one off sub standard showing by Giggs, and United fans will point to any number of similarly poor games by the veteran Welshman throughout a season catalogued by terrible decision making and slack execution of any passes attempted.
This accusation can also be pointed at the once unflappable Paul Scholes, with a worrying feature of his performances since his return from his mid-season injury being the unwanted danger he puts the United rearguard in to by repeatedly gifting the ball to more energetic opposition midfielders on the edge of the United penalty area. Luckily, the ironclad nature of the United defence has meant that Scholes’ indiscretions have yet to be punished.
However, as Manchester United now move towards the business end of the season, the negative effect that the inclusion of these players has on the team can only increase as the stakes grow larger.
Sir Alex Ferguson has seemed to be aware of the waning abilities of Ryan Giggs when it comes to his team selection for the Champions League, with Ji-Sung Park usurping the once irreplaceable Welshman in United’s line up for the first leg of their quarter final clash with A.S. Roma.
But when the Scotsman stated that “if we got to the Champions League final again, then I'm telling you that I would have to be sentimental when it came to choosing my team for that one. I'd have to pick Paul (Scholes) to play because he deserves it,” this will seriously unsettle all United observers who have seen Scholes outperformed regularly by his midfield counterparts Michael Carrick, Anderson, and Owen Hargreaves throughout the season.
No Room For Sentiment
With this week’s game against Barcelona being a match where the superior physicality of this trio could really unsettle a Barcelona team that have proven to be without a backbone, the inclusion of Scholes could provide the Blaugranes with an opportunity to even the odds in midfield, and be given a free ticket to charge at the United defence unopposed.
Thus, the argument that there can be little doubt that Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are only warranting their places in the United starting line up due to the weight of their past glories seems impossible to argue against.
Yet it is strange that a manager such as Sir Alex Ferguson who has so unceremoniously dropped star names such as Jim Leighton, Jaap Stam, Paul Ince, and David Beckham at even the slightest hint of a waning of their abilities in the past has found it hard to dispense of this experienced duo when he has proven replacements in his squad, seems a potentially dangerous decision.
The Manchester United manager must return to this cold hearted nature if the Red Devils are to stand every chance of winning the Champions League and Premiership double that they have promised to do all season long, and remove any vestiges of sentimentality when it comes to making the correct decisions when it comes to his side’s team selections.

Tbf to Giggs he's heard it all before.
I remember a few seasons ago he lost form and there were rumours about him moving to Inter Milan. He was left on the bench for a Champs League game v Juve but due to an injury had to come on in the 1st half. He scored 2 in our victory at the Stadio del Alpi.
Prove 'em wrong again Giggsy!

i dont think this is problem for any player. georghe hagi is 36 years and then finish 34 is ok. maybe there is no will for him to be the best now. he has plenty money and plenty car to drive so he has no urgency any more. time to go.

Giggs has lost it. His whole game was pace. He was never immensely technically gifted like Ronaldo who could still be a threat if he was slower, or an expert at passing the pall and seeing plays like Scholes, he was just a very good winger, and a wingers most important weapon is his speed, which Giggs just doesn't have.

You're right, he doesn't have the pace or stamina to play on the wing anymore. I still think Giggsy could do a good job in central midfield but we have so much talent in that department that he'll never get a game there now.
