Danny Welbeck and Rodrigo Possebon struck late goals at Old Trafford as United overcame Bolton Wanderers in the Manchester Senior Cup final.

After a sluggish start from the Reds' second string, Welbeck converted Michael Barnes' right-wing cross with a classy sliding volley 11 minutes from time, before Possebon smashed home his first goal for the club in injury time.

Bolton created enough chances to worry United, however, and never more than an almighty goalmouth scramble with five minutes remaining, which saw Sean Evans clearing from the very edge of his own goal-line after three previous efforts had been blocked.

The Trotters can feel hard done by to leave Old Trafford empty-handed, having created the clearer chances for the opening hour of the game. Numerous half-chances were spurned, with Jaroslaw Fojut heading onto the roof of the net and later against the post.

Chris Eagles had United's best effort of the first period, but goalkeeper Tom Brocklehurst made a fine diving save to turn the winger's curling free kick around the post.

As the game wore on, United increasingly took up the attacking mantle. Eagles saw another free-kick deflected wide, David Gray planted a firm header just past the post and Welbeck saw his long-range effort well turned around the post by Brocklehurst.

The Bolton goalkeeper was left unprotected by his defence in the 79th minute, however, when Welbeck slid onto Barnes' fine right-wing cross to volley into the back of the net.

Although the highly-rated young striker had endured a quiet game, it was a timely reminder of his undoubted talent and a fitting way to celebrate being named the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year on Sunday.

Undeterred, Bolton hit back and had three quickfire opportunities to draw level. First, Ron-Robert Zieler brilliantly saved Robert Sissons' header, then Chester bravely blocked from Fojut, who then saw his follow-up shot stopped on the line by Evans.

Despite that scare United continued to look for a killer second, and it duly came when Sissons failed to clear a bouncing ball inside his own area, and Possebon - who shone all evening - smashed in a left-footed volley from 15 yards.

The Brazilian's strike ensured that United won the competition for the 28th time, and made it two pieces of silverware in as many days for the club, following the senior side's Premier League retention on Sunday.

United: Zieler; Gray, Chester, Eckersley, Cleverley; Barnes, Hewson, Possebon, S Evans; Welbeck, Eagles.
Subs not used: Amos, Fagan, Macheda, James, Drinkwater.

Congratulations to the Reserve team. They've done us proud. Nice to see Possebon on the score-sheet.

I don't suppose there are any statistics available for the reserve side's season e.g. Top scorer etc...

A great result for the reserves. Welbeck and Possebon are probably the 2 players with the most potential to break into the 1st team squad so good to see them win some silverware for the club.

I was keeping an eye on the game but tbh I missed both goals and only knew we'd won because I watched the Welbeck interview after the game.

Bolton dominated us for the entire game pretty much. We got 2 late goals
and that was that. Thats the 5th time they played Bolton this season and they
only lost 1 I think.
Bolton were excellent but were denied by the brilliant Zieler and Eckersley
time and time again.
Well done lads more silverware won at OT.

Its always good to see the Reserve team win.

Hopefully that won't be the last piece of silver heading to Old Trafford this season ;)

Congratulations to them.

We have a player called Drinkwater. Seriously I don't watch much of the reserves. After Rossi's season and him been let go I didn't see much hope for anyone. Does any1 fancy Wellbeck getting a chance next year?

Yes.

Depends who we sign an if Campbell stays.

Could be one year too soon for Danny Wellbeck though. He is still VERY young for a United trainee.

Campbell will be the striker to watch youth team wise next season if he stays.

Reserves revel in glory

"That's what we aim for all season, to win trophies, and it's come true at the end. The first team set the standard. They win things, so it's good for us to win trophies too to back that up."

- Sam Hewson

Reserves captain Sam Hewson was delighted to follow the first team's lead by clinching silverware on Monday evening.

United overcame Bolton in the Manchester Senior Cup final, less than 24 hours after Sir Alex Ferguson's first team had retained the Premier League title, and Hewson was happy to prolong the feelgood factor at Old Trafford.

"I'm a Bolton lad so it's good to beat them in the final," the midfielder told MUTV. "But that's what we aim for all season, to win trophies, and it's come true at the end. The first team set the standard. They win things, so it's good for us to win trophies too to back that up."

The Reds triumphed through late goals from Danny Welbeck and Rodrigo Possebon. Highly-rated young striker Welbeck, who was named Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year on Sunday, is intent on continuing an ascension which has taken him to regularly training with the first team.

"It's always great to get silverware, it's always a big boost," he said. "I've progressed through the stages. I'm just looking to stay at the top, keep training with the first team and give it my all.
