Pompey charged over Benjani moves

Portsmouth and agent Willie McKay have been charged by the FA with breaches of rules over the transfer of Benjani to and from the club.

Under the Football Association's football agents regulations, agents are prohibited from acting for two different clubs in two consecutive transactions involving the same player.

Clubs are not allowed to use the services of an agent in such circumstances, the FA stated.

It is alleged that McKay acted on behalf of Auxerre in respect of the transfer of Benjani from Auxerre to Portsmouth in January 2006.

He is then alleged to have acted for Portsmouth in Benjani's transfer from Portsmouth to Manchester City in January this year, the subsequent completed transaction involving the player.

Both parties have until August 29 to respond to the charges.

Huntelaar agent denies Madrid talk
http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...981491,00.html

Reports linking Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar with a move to Real Madrid have been described as "nonsense" by the player's agent.

Thursday's edition of Spanish sports newspaper Marca claimed the Spanish champions were interested in signing the 25-year-old, while foreign media have gone as far as to suggest Ajax had received a bid of 25million euros for their captain.

But Arnold Oosterveer denied there had been any concrete interest in the striker, telling fcupdate.nl: "No, nothing is going on at the moment. The rumours are nonsense."

Huntelaar, who scored 33 goals in 34 appearances last season, is under contract until summer 2010.

WENGER PROMISES NEW FACE
http://www.football365.com/story/0,1...980746,00.html

Arsene Wenger has promised a new signing for Arsenal within the next two weeks.

That new signing is expected to be a central midfielder with the Gunners being forced to play youngsters Denilson and Aaron Ramsey in that position against FC Twente on Wednesday night.

After the 2-0 win in Holland, Wenger said: "Will something be done ahead of the second leg? Certainly yes, but before Saturday, no."

But Wenger declared himself pleasantly surprised with the depth of his squad, who pulled off a victory despite having almost a full team missing.

"If you look at the number of players we had out, you can say it was very positive for us," he said. "We did not have Diaby, Fabregas, Rosicky, Nasri, Kolo Toure, Eduardo and Senderos while Song as at the Olympics.

"We missed seven or eight players out so for me our squad looks big because the players who were here did well."

Of the absentees, only Samir Nasri and Kolo Toure are believed to be in contention to make a return on Saturday when Arsenal face West Brom.

United to rival Lyon for Lens starlet

Manchester United are reportedly ready to rival Lyon for French starlet Thimothee Kolodzieczak, who is currently at Lens.

The 16-year-old looks set to depart the Northern French side with a big battle now on to land him.

The left-back has been offered a five-year contract to remain at the Felix Bollaert, but it seems he could be prised away before making his first-team debut.

Lens are asking €3million for the player, who is already part of the French Under-18 squad.

However, Lyon are only offering €1million and the two clubs are continuing to talk, although the French champions say they will not pay over the odds.

"Regarding a possible newcomer on the left to support Fabio Grosso, we are looking at the youngster at Lens, but Lens are being too greedy," Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas told the club's official website.

"If their position is not changed within 48 hours, then Claude Puel [coach] will guide us towards another player of a very high level."

Reports in France suggest that United are also interested in Kolodzieczak and could put together a package to take him across the Channel.

REDKNAPP REJECTS HAMMERS LINK
http://www.football365.com/story/0,1...005808,00.html

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has dismissed reports linking him with a move back to former club West Ham as "an absolute load of rubbish".

With rumours Alan Curbishley's long-term position at Upton Park being under threat, the 61-year-old has emerged as a potential replacement should a vacancy occur.

However, Redknapp - who both played for and then managed the Hammers, from 1994 to 2001 - maintains he is fully focused on building for the future at Fratton Park with last season's FA Cup winners.

Redknapp told BBC Radio Solent: "It's an absolute load of rubbish.

"A few people have rung me up in the last couple of days, but I have never spoken to anybody about it.

"We are building a team here and want to have another good season."

Appiah quits Fener after fall-out

Ghana captain Stephen Appiah claims to be a free agent after quitting Fenerbahce over a fall-out with the Turkish side's management.

The 27-year-old midfielder has spent close to nine months on the sidelines due to a long-standing knee injury which forced him to miss the African Nations Cup in his home country earlier this year.

He has been linked with a move away from Turkey all summer and this latest twist could create plenty of interest in Appiah before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

"I am a free agent," he told Accra radio station Happy FM at the weekend. "A few issues happened between me and the club so I no longer play for them."

However, the ex-Juventus and Parma ace rubbished reports of a return to another former club Brescia in Italy's Serie B, revealing instead that he was examining his options before deciding on his next move.

"Those stories about me and Brescia are not true," he said. "My personal trainer works with Brescia and I did a lot of work with him there during the off-season so maybe that is where the rumours are from.

"But there a few offers I am studying even though I am not in a hurry. I want to make the right choice. At the end of it all the most important thing is that wherever I end up, I will give it my absolute all."

Appiah, who helped the Black Stars reach the second round of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, stated that he has always placed his health before football in his bid to return from injury.

He added: "I am happy just to be alive after the injury. I was complaining of asthma after surgery last year, but it was not that. I missed an injection and blood went into my lungs. Football was not the most important thing. I nearly lost my life.

"Sometimes when things happen, you can be knocked off if you are not strong mentally. But I am strong mentally and I never give up which is why I am still going strong.

"I don't want to rush the comeback. I want everything to be gradual. I have been out for one year and I understand it will take time to get my rhythm back. Everything is going well and very soon you will see me again on the football field."

Appiah also hailed his national team-mates for their support during his injury break, stating: "I speak to many of the players every day. (Michael) Essien, (Laryea) Kingston, all of them have done a great deal for me. They have encouraged me a lot with their phone calls and text messages. I feel I must keep going to justify the confidence they have in me because they have been there for me."

KEEGAN WAITING ON `WOW` FACTOR

http://www.football365.com/story/0,1...004485,00.html

Kevin Keegan must now wait to see if Newcastle's mooted 'wow' signing comes off.

The Toon opened their Premier League season impressively by holding champions Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

There could be more additions to Keegan's squad before the transfer window closes, with owner Mike Ashley apparently having promised a 'wow' signing.

Argentina star Javier Saviola has been mentioned but Keegan's demands are rather more straightforward.

"Too often in the recent past we have bought players who have not been quite good enough," he said.

"They have either not settled or not understood what it means to play for Newcastle.

"You can't just say good players can play at Newcastle because history will prove they cannot."

For a team that conceded 11 goals in two meetings with Manchester United last season and have not won at Old Trafford since 1972, Sunday provided a positive start to the new campaign.

"I don't think it has been a bad summer but then I have not been reading what has been written," said Keegan.

"But in football at the moment, you don't want these things on your doorstep, at your club.

"It is nice to get a good result so it goes on to another club but I don't envy whoever it is."

HYYPIA: WE WERE NOT GOOD ENOUGH
http://www.football365.com/story/0,1...006054,00.html

Sami Hyypia has admitted that Liverpool were 'not good enough' in their opening day win over Sunderland.

Rafa Benitez's side were lacklustre for much of the game at the Stadium of Light, and had to rely on a late Fernando Torres strike to secure the three points.

And Hyypia, who can expect to find his opportunities limited with the return to fitness of Daniel Agger and the promise of Martin Skrtel, believes that Liverpool need to up their game.

"The first half in particular was not good enough, we know that" Hyypia told The Liverpool Echo.

"It was tough for us at the start of the game. They came out of the blocks really quickly and set a really high tempo, which you'd expect because it was their first home game of the season.

"They put us under a lot of pressure and maybe we were a little bit slow to get going.

"It was certainly not the best game we have played, but the important thing was that we got better in the second half and at the end Fernando popped up with a goal and that was enough to win the game.

"The most important thing is that we got the win. It was good to get three points and keep a clean sheet.

"We have to be happy with that but we have to look at what we can do better because there are many, many things that we can do better."

Hyypia follows Dirk Kuyt, who admitted that Liverpool would need to improve on their similarly poor showing in the Champions League against Standard Liege last week.

Kuyt said: "We will not play as badly as that again, we must improve and we will improve.

"It was a bad performance. We tried to do our best and it was not good enough.

"The forwards just did not have enough of the ball, and our man of the match was Pepe Reina, that says everything about us.

"We will need a big improvement at Anfield. We know we did not play our best game against Liege, we know that as a team."

Moyes refusing to make panic buys

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...006055,00.html

The Toffees boss has been thwarted in his attempts to bolster his squad this summer, with transfer targets either proving to be unavailable or unobtainable.

The Scot accepts that new signings are crucial if the club are replicate their fifth place finish of last season, but will not abandon his principles as he continues to search for suitable reinforcements.

Moyes was forced to field the most inexperienced substitute's bench in the club's history at the weekend, as the Toffees went down 3-2 against Blackburn at Goodison Park.

Despite the inevitable problems a reliance on youth can bring, the experienced coach is adamant that quality rather than quantity remains his policy ahead of the closure of the transfer window on August 31.

"I'm not changing," Moyes told the Liverpool Echo.

"I'm only going to bring quality in. We haven't got the money to go out and buy six £15million players.

"We don't have that, so of course we are going to bring players in who are down at the lower end of the market.

"But, as I've always said, I'm looking to get the main players in first. Then we will look at what we can do after that."

Everton continue to chase Sporting Lisbon playmaker Joao Moutinho, but a defensive-minded midfielder in the mould of the recently-departed Lee Carsley would be a more suitable option.

Moyes was forced to pair Jack Rodwell and Phil Jagielka in the middle of the park on Saturday, a far from ideal situation as Rodwell is only 17-years-old and Jagielka is a centre-half by trade.

BEIJING DUO SET TO RETURN
http://www.football365.com/story/0,1...004641,00.html

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez will have two of his three Olympic stars back in the squad for Saturday's game with Middlesbrough.

Ryan Babel's Holland were beaten in the quarter-finals by Argentina at the weekend, which puts Javier Mascherano in with a shout of a second successive gold medal.

Argentina now face Brazil in the semi-finals on Tuesday where Mascherano will clash with club-mate Lucas.

Benitez said: "It has been good for the three players to be involved in the Olympics and we are proud of them.

"But it is also good for Liverpool that Argentina and Brazil clash in the last four, because only one of our lads will be in the final."

Mascherano Makes History In Beijing
http://www.goal.com/en-US/Articolo.a...enutoId=830924

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has become the first Argentinian footballer in history to win two Olympic gold medals.

Javier Mascherano helped the Albiceleste beat Nigeria 1-0 in this morning's Olympic final in Beijing‘s Bird‘s Nest Stadium, the winning goal for the South Americans being scored by Angel Di Maria in the 58th minute.

And in doing so, Mascherano made history, because four years ago in Athens, the defensive midfielder was also in the Argentina side that defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the Olympic final. That means he is the first Argentine ever to win Olympic gold twice.

The Liverpool star, now 24, was selected in Argentina’s squad for Beijing by national team manager Sergio Batista as one of three allocated over-age players.

Mascherano is now expected back on Merseyside in the next few days, says the Liverpool FC website, and he will be joined by Brazilian Lucas, who earned a bronze Olympic medal after Brazil beat Belgium 3-0 in the third place play-off.

More Boruc Drink-Fueled Madness Revealed
http://www.goal.com/en-US/Articolo.a...enutoId=830825

The Daily Record reports that Artur Boruc's boozy antics with Poland teammates, which have landed him with an international suspension, is just the tip of the iceberg after a summer of mental antics.

Poland boss Leo Beenhakker Boruc has told goalie Boruc, along with mates Dariusz Dudka and Radolav Majewski, that he's out of the international fold until further notice after enjoying a night on the tiles with journalists in Lvov, Ukraine.

The timing, of course, is less than ideal with the World Cup preliminaries looming large.

Now, reports suggest that Boruc has already been hit with a £50,000 fine - two week's wages - after partaking in unsolicited drinking sessions during pre-season training with Celtic in the Netherlands.

Boss Gordon Strachan and club chief Peter Lawwell were reportedly furious this summer and have encouraged their charges to act as 'ambassadors for Celtic'.

Boundaries

Furthermore, Strachan is set to contact Beenhakker to find out exactly what happened after the Poles' 1-0 defeat in the Ukraine.

Strachan said: "I didn't speak to Boruc - I'm totally focused on the Falkirk game - but once this game is out the way I'll deal with it."

Wily Beenhakker, though, has refused to rule the trio out of the upcoming games against Slovenia and San Marino. He explained: "These players crossed the limits - they went outwith my boundaries and have to be punished.

"However, It's not true that I have told Artur and the rest they will be out of my squad for the games. That's something they'll have to wait to discover."

Boruc has courted controversy during his time at Celtic, twice involved in alleged sectarian provokation during Old Firm derbies.

Scolari drops SWP hint

England winger could be set for move
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,195...035390,00.html

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari admits he would be willing to trim his squad ahead of the close of the transfer-window and that could mean Shaun Wright-Phillips being allowed to leave.

The likes of Juliano Belletti, Branislav Ivanovic, Andriy Shevchenko and Wright-Phillips are all on the fringes of the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge.

Scolari currently has 26 players in his senior set-up and he admits he could be willing to let up to two of them leave.

Shevchenko was this week in talks with AC Milan - but the deal fell through, and Scolari insisted he was more than happy to see the Ukrainian stay.

Belletti, Ivanovic and Wright-Phillips have also been linked with moves away and the England star has a number of clubs interested in taking him.

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is desperate to take him to Fratton Park, whilst Aston Villa, Sunderland, Newcastle and former club Manchester City are also thought to be keen.

Scolari insists he does not know if anyone has come in for Wright-Phillips but dropped a big hint that he would be happy for him to depart.

"We have 26 players now," said Scolari.

"If I lose one or two, it's not a problem for me because I have a minimum 24 or 25.

"I don't know if some clubs want Shaun [Wright-Phillips] and I don't know what the player thinks about offers from other teams but as I've said before, if I have 24 or 25 and three or four players for two positions, I am happy.

"I have three or four players in this position - right wing, left wing. If the club sell one or two players more, it's not a problem for me."

'Embarrassed' Thaksin in quit offer

Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra has offered to resign from the board at Eastlands, executive chairman Garry Cook has revealed.

The former Thai prime minister flew to Britain last week instead of returning to his homeland to face court charges, calling into question his future at City.

The Premier League are looking into the situation amid claims Thaksin could fail the 'fit and proper person test' for involvement in a top-flight club.

Cook said: "Dr Thaksin is embarrassed about the indignity brought on all the entities - the club, the Premier League - he never intended this.

"Dr Thaksin has been really open about this. He has said to me, 'if you need me to resign from the football club as a director, because it would serve the needs of the Premier League, then I'm fine with that as long as that doesn't change any other thing.'

"I think there is a very loose term about what is 'fit and proper.' It is almost a tongue-in-cheek term that you would use for Premier League football over the last 10 years. There are plenty of unfit and improper individuals."

Cook also admitted Thaksin does have financial constraints - his assets have been frozen in Thailand - but denied it will be a major problem for City.

"Dr Thaksin is in a political situation and a case that affects his assets, so that's well documented. So that's a hurdle," Cook said.

"The truth of it is this club is not going to go out of business. This club is not bankrupt. We're moving forward."

Cook revealed Thaksin will not be present when City host West Ham tomorrow because of fears for his safety.

"He wants to be at this ground on Sunday but he is hearing advice about being in a public space," Cook added.

Sommeil leaves intensive care
http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...035824,00.html

Valenciennes have reported an improvement in the condition of defender David Sommeil, who suffered a heart attack earlier in the week.

The 34-year-old has been hospitalised since collapsing at the end of a VA training session on Wednesday, and is yet to fully regain consciousness.

But he has left intensive care and the club have revealed his condition is now stable.

"David Sommeil has slowly left the state of sedation in which he was placed artificially after his heart attack," read a statement on VA's website.

"The patient is stable from a cardiac point of view."

Sommeil, a father of two children, is expected to be taken oof breathing apparatus on Saturday and will undergo further neurological tests once he completely wakes up.

The former Bordeaux and Manchester City centre-back was sat on a bench taking in fluid and talking to team-mates when he collapsed at the end of training on Wednesday.

A club doctor used a defibrillator on Sommeil, who had been given mouth to mouth by a team-mate.

Owen set for Toon talks - Keegan
http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...035150,00.html

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan remains optimistic Michael Owen will sign a new deal at St James' Park as the pair prepare for talks this week.

The England striker will be out of contract next summer and could talk to other clubs if nothing is agreed before then.

"We are having a meeting next Wednesday about a lot of things and contracts will be one of the things discussed," Magpies manager Keegan said.

"There are other players to discuss as well. I'm fairly relaxed about it, but I will know more when we sit down.

"These things happen. The main thing at the end of the day is that it will be sorted.

"I think I can honestly say that, if it comes to January, then the chances are he won't be [staying], but I don't think it will get there."

Villarreal chief hails Senna

Villarreal president Fernando Roig described Marcos Senna as "vital" to the team after agreeing a contract extension with the Spain star.

There had been some doubt about Senna's future at Villarreal with former Spain coach Luis Aragones keen for the Brazilian-born midfielder to join him at Turkish side Fenerbahce, something the player admitted appealed to him.

However, Villarreal have moved to end that speculation by agreeing a one-year contract extension with the Euro 2008 winner that should keep him at El Madrigal for three more seasons.

"Marcos is and will be a very important player for Villarreal," Roig said of Senna, whose new deal has a buy-out clause of 100 million euros.

"This club is doing very well and he is vital to this project. As well as that, we wants to continue here, so we have made the effort to keep him with us."

Senna said: "The truth is that I couldn't see myself in any other shirt than Villarreal's. I always wanted to stay here and because of that we have reached an agreement very quickly."

Schuster hails Madrid comeback

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster was amazed after his team's comeback against Valencia in the Spanish Supercopa on Sunday night.

A jubilant Schuster admitted in his 30 years in professional football he had never before experienced anything like his side's stunning victory.

Already trailing 3-2 from the first leg, Madrid looked in deep trouble at half-time of the return meeting at the Bernabeu as they trailed 1-0 and had also seen summer signing Rafael van der Vaart sent off.

The reigning Spanish champions were then plunged further into the mire in the 68th minute when striker Ruud van Nistelrooy was also dismissed, seemingly destrying any hope the Dutchman's 50th-minute penalty equaliser had given his side.

However, from looking on the brink of defeat, the nine men of Madrid produced a fairytale final 13 minutes, scoring three times through Sergio Ramos and substitutes Ruben de la Red and Gonzalo Higuain to earn a 4-2 victory on the night - Fernando Morientes netted a late goal for Valencia - and a 6-5 aggregate triumph.

"The truth is this very rarely happens. I've never lived such an experience before, neither as a player nor as a coach," said the 48-year-old Schuster, who made his playing debut three decades ago.

"It was very surprising. I relied on the opinion that there are teams who sometimes find it harder to play with a man more.

"With less players, the team unites more and sacrifices more, also the concentration levels improve. Our opponent didn't know how to play with their advantage and we showed we knew how to take advantage of it very well."

Despite Valencia's dramatic implosion, Schuster still had words of praise for Los Che and their new coach, the 36-year-old Unai Emery.

"We had to change the match, but I guess that a defeat like that has to hurt. But he (Emery) is a young coach with a lot of talent, and I think they've shown they are going to be useful team this year," Schuster added.

Looking ahead to the coming week and the possibility of new signings coming in, Schuster admitted it would be tough to improve on what they already have.

"This team has a base that we like and was hard to get, but we are going to be alert until the last day (of the transfer window) for any interesting signing. However, it is not going to be easy given the quality of the squad," he said.

MOYES: I`M LETTING PLAYERS DOWN

Everton boss David Moyes admitted he was "letting his players down" through his failure to bring in any new signings during the summer transfer window.

But Moyes insisted he was still ready to put pen to paper on a new contract despite his frustration at not being able to bolster a squad that had finished fifth in the Premier League for the past two seasons.

A patched-up Everton side - including 16-year-old full debutant Jose Baxter - gained a 2-1 success at West Brom thanks to second half goals from Leon Osman and Ayegbeni Yakubu.

But Moyes is aware the Toffees have to make significant new additions to have any chance of moving onto the next level and challenging the top four.

Moyes said: "We're trying all routes. There might be some buys and there might be some loans but I said that six weeks ago and nothing has so far happened.

"It is the last days of the sales and there is not much left.

"I hope to try and get maybe a couple of players in but, for the quality I need us to get to continue forward, I don't know if you can get someone with a few days to go.

"I need to add mainly midfield and forward players to the squad. Our defenders today were the reason we got a result.

"I feel as if I've let the players down. I've got a real good relationship with the players and they know how I work.

"I got people like Tim Cahill, Mikel Arteta, Joleon Lescott, Phil Jagielka, Leon Osman, Tony Hibbert, Phil Neville all to build and have a group together on the understanding I'm going to progress Everton and make them better.

"At the moment, at this summer I'm not progressing Everton so I feel as if I'm letting them down.

"My ambition is to develop Everton. Every year I've been here I feel I developed. This is the first summer where I don't feel I've made any progress.

"My ambition is that I want to challenge the top managers in the league.

"We've not had massive amounts of money but we've got to the stage now where we require a greater deal if we are going to challenge the Liverpools, Chelseas, Arsenals, Manchester Uniteds.

"That is not withstanding the fact of trying to stay ahead of the Aston Villas and the Tottenhams who are flushed with it (money)."

Moyes is adamant he is still committed to signing a new deal - he has 12 months left of his current contract - despite his current frustrations.

He said: "I'm still positive that I'll have a new contract to deal with shortly. I want to get this week out of the way before the transfer window closes.

"There is that much going on now, I couldn't put that into the middle of this week on the agenda, that's for sure.

"The situation is just the same. I am fine. I'll have a contract. There is a contract there. I've spoken to the chairman (Bill Kenwright). When we get around to doing it, it is available to do."

Scolari's jigsaw nearly complete

Luiz Felipe Scolari is ready to put the finishing touches to his Chelsea squad tinkering this week, with Kaka and Robinho in his sights.

There have been reports of a renewed move for Real Madrid's wantaway forward Robinho and suggestions that a world-record deal to bring Kaka to Stamford Bridge next season will be struck, while Andriy Shevchenko has agreed to join AC Milan.

A move for Shaun Wright-Phillips could also be on the cards before the end of the summer transfer window, with Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton all linked to him, and Scolari has some important decisions to make in what is likely to be a frenzied few days.

One of the club's recent acquisitions, Scolari's former Portugal protege Deco, has already started to make an impact on the Premier League - scoring his second goal in as many matches against Wigan on Sunday.

And with his second victory successfully negotiated - albeit in less handsome fashion than the opening-day rout of Portsmouth - Scolari is ready for the task.

Speaking after the 1-0 win he said: "Tomorrow when I am back at the club I will discuss these things.

"It is important (to be focused) before a game. Last week we only talked about Wigan but tomorrow I will talk about players.

"Tomorrow when I come into the club I will discuss this or that, who comes, who goes.

"First we finished the game. Now we get back to London and I start a new week."

Two men who are sure to remain key figures under Scolari regardless of any further additions to the squad are match-winner Deco and England midfielder Frank Lampard.

But while Scolari was pleased to see his midfield duo's goal tally reach three in two games when the former Barcelona playmaker lashed home a third-minute free-kick, he insists that results are more important than personal milestones.

"If Deco is scoring goals or if Lampard is scoring goals is not important, what is important is if Chelsea win," he said. "Chelsea is more important than us. They are friends and if one scores the other players are happy.

"I read that Lampard, in the last two or three seasons, has scored 20 goals every year. This season maybe 25, but maybe 15 or 10. Maybe even five. It is not important if Chelsea win."

Bednar: Baggies need two strikers

Roman Bednar admits there is a wide gulf between the Championship and the Premier League - and wants West Brom to play with two strikers.

West Brom suffered their second defeat of the season as they lost 2-1 at home to Everton on Saturday.

Bednar scored a late penalty but was disappointed with the result and has now urged his team-mates to bounce back.

"It was a beautiful feeling (to score) but it did not win us the points," the Czech Republic striker told Denik Sport. "I would definitely be happier if we had won or if my goal had meant a point for us.

"When we played like this in the second division, it was mostly us who scored, kept the ball and passed it around, and we did not lose games like this.

"Now, against Everton we played well, also kept the ball and it did not seem that they might harm us. But then two chances came and two goals from them."

The Baggies lost 1-0 to Arsenal in their opening match and Bednar realises the pressure will soon build if things do not improve.

"So far nothing has been intense but we know we have to make some points in the next games," he explained. "I think we did not play bad in the first games, however, we did not win any points.

"The first game with Arsenal, okay, that does not count, but we are sorry for the defeat by Everton."

Bednar has started both games on the substitutes' bench and hopes to feature more heavily from now on.

He said: "The coach has been relying on a one-striker formation. But maybe he will be willing to know that we have lost two games with that tactic.

"We will see, I will keep on doing my best, work hard and try to score some more goals."

Title tilt is tough now - Adebayor
http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...046789,00.html

Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor is hoping the shock defeat by Fulham will act as a wake-up call for the Gunners' title ambitions.

Arsene Wenger's troops followed up an opening day win over West Brom with a 1-0 loss at Fulham on Saturday to put an early dent in their bid for the title.

Adebayor acknowledged the Gunners cannot afford to be losing games at such an early stage of the Premier League season.

The Togo striker believes the setback at Craven Cottage will act as a reminder to any players who think the Gunners are 'untouchable'.

"Of course, we cannot afford to lose another game," said Adebayor in The Sun. "As players, as a club playing for the title, we don't want to lose a single game. But we have lost, the defeat is there. We cannot change that.

"We just have to keep on going, try to be focused a little better and achieve things.

"Now the title becomes a bit difficult, as we have lost the second game of the season.

"I think losing here is going to be the best warning we can be given. We can't think we are untouchable."

Robinho deal moving closer - Agent

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...050844,00.html

Chelsea could finally be set to sign Robinho after the Brazilian's agent revealed the playmaker's Real Madrid career was about to end.

The Blues have been tracking Robinho for much of the summer and lodged a bid with Real earlier this month.

The Spanish champions were initially keen to keep the 24-year and Chelsea were not willing to match their lofty valuation.

However, Robinho recently admitted he was desperate to leave the Bernabeu and secure a move to Chelsea, and Real responded by saying they would let him leave.

The former Santos playmaker has been warned he may have to pay to terminate his contract, but agent Wagner Ribeiro expects the matter to be resolved before the close of the transfer window.

"The deal is about to be reached," Ribeiro said in the Daily Mirror.

"Robinho's cycle in Spain has come to an end and he is looking forward to a new project."

Reports suggest that Robinho will travel to London this week to discuss personal terms ahead of a proposed £28million move.

Pompey Hand Trial To African Full-Back

http://www.goal.com/en-US/Articolo.a...enutoId=835189

Portsmouth have handed a trial to South African full-back Innocent Mdledle, according to his club, Orlando Pirates.

The 22-year-old reportedly impressed Pompey manager Harry Redknapp during the course of his nation’s 2-2 with Australia last week at Loftus Road in London.

The left-footer, who won Orlando Pirates’ Player of the Year award last season, has travelled back to England and will hope to earn a permanent deal at Portsmouth.

With Hermann Hreidarsson the only specialist left-back in Harry Redknapp’s panel, the FA Cup holders are short on cover in that position.

Pirates chief executive Floyd Mbele told the South African press: “We have received a request from Portsmouth to have a look at the boy and we acceded.

“We had an understanding with the club that he should be back in the country before the league kicks off this weekend.

“Should he make the grade, then we will look at their offer and give him a chance to play at that level.”

Berbatov's agent flies in for Spurs crisis talks to force through United move

Dimitar Berbatov has been locked in crisis talks over his future with Tottenham head coach Juande Ramos.

It is believed Berbatov's agent Emil Dantchev was present at the meeting in London this morning as the Bulgarian tries to convince the club to let him join Manchester United.

The 27-year-old refused to play against Sunderland on Saturday because his 'head wasn't right' and Spurs have threatened to let him rot in the reserves if they don't get a high enough bid from United.

Berbatov is in danger of becoming an outcast at Tottenham with some senior players left furious after he didn't play against Sunderland. He wasn't even on the subs' bench as Spurs lost their second straight game of the season.

The striker has told the club to let him fulfil his dream of going to Old Trafford, but the deal has been held up due to chairman Daniel Levy's complaint to the Premier League over United's pursuit of the Bulgarian international.

The saga is threatening the mood in the dressing room and a few players would rather lose his talent up front than keep him at the club.

Berbatov's attitude in pre-season didn't go down well with members of the squad and it is understood that some players lost patience after he didn't play against Sunderland.

Defender Jonathan Woodgate insisted afterwards that the team's poor start to the campaign shouldn't be blamed on Berbatov, but it is not a view shared by everyone behind the scenes.

He has also lost the backing of many of the fans and was booed loudly when he appeared as a substitute against Middlesbrough last week.

Tottenham are still maintaining they will keep the player unless they get a bid of £30m, but they were prepared to accept £28m a few weeks ago as long as they were able to buy a replacement.

They have even threatened to put Berbatov in the reserves should the move not take place and his attitude continues to be disruptive, but an agreement is expected to be reached.

Ramos is desperate for the situation to be resolved as soon as possible so the club have enough time to find a replacement what with the transfer window closing at midnight on Monday.

CAPELLO LEFT FUMING BY BENITEZ AND FERGUSON

Suffering from the sort of withdrawal symptoms that will be familiar to his predecessors, England manager Fabio Capello reportedly believes that his aspiration of guiding the Three Lions to the World Cup is being derailed by two of the Premier League's leading managers.

Ahead of the most important week of his eight-month reign, the Italian is said to be particularly angry with Rafa Benitez after receiving no prior notice that Steven Gerrard would be unavailable for next week's qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia. Capello's mood darkened further yesterday when Sir Alex Ferguson definalty announced that while Owen Hargreaves would feature in this Friday's Super Cup match against Zenit St Petersberg he would resist the midfielder's release for the critical tie in Zagreb.

Variously described as 'stunned' and 'shocked' by the news that Gerrard is to have a minor operation on his groin later today, Ferguson's comments are reported to have left 'an already angry' Capello 'fuming'.

"I think it is impossible for him to play for England," Ferguson told reporters. "This will be his first start and he certainly won't be on for more than an hour. After that, he will need a recovery period, so I think it is very, very unlikely that Fabio would risk him."

Capello's response may be to insist that Hargreaves reports for international duty and instruct his medical staff to determine the player's level of fitness.

As well as being dismayed that Liverpool did not warn him that it had been decided that Gerrard would have an operation on his groin, the Italian is also entitled to be bewildered that England's expensively-assembled medical team did not detect the Liverpool captain's problem when he was on international duty last week.

According to Benitez, "He had a problem for the first game with Liege, and also when he went away to play for England in their friendly last week against the Czech Republic." Yet, by selecting Gerrard for the match, it is apparent that Capello had no inkling that the player was struggling or would require an operation. Furthermore, The Times discloses that when Capello met with reporters from the Sunday newspapers on Wednesday, 'he answered a significant number of questions about Gerrard's role, all from the perspective that he would be playing.' 'Had Capello known that there was a problem,' the newspaper concludes, 'he would surely have mentioned it then.'

Instead, the first Capello knew of Gerrard's operation and withdrawal was when England physio Gary Lewin - a surprise full-time appointment this summer given Arsenal's wretched injury record and habit of aggravating injuries by selecting less-than-fully-recovered players - contacted him late on Wednesday night. It is unknown whether Lewin provided an explanation for why Capello had not been previously alerted to the injury, or whether Gerrard himself has also explained why he did not let his international boss know in advance that he required an operation.

Nonetheless, the unexpected loss of such a important player has left Capello angry and suspicious that Liverpool, who have used Gerrard in every match so far this season, have been planning for some time to put their captain under the knife during what is, from their perspective, a conveniently-timed international week. From England's, it is anything but.

BILIC HOVERS AS SUPPORT FOR CURBS DWINDLES

The Croatia manager Slaven Bilic is emerging as a serious threat to Alan Curbishley as the position of the West Ham manager becomes increasingly precarious.

Subject to scathing criticism from the stands during the midweek Carling Cup tie - which the Hammers only won in extra time after their opponents had a player dismissed - against Macclesfield, Curbishley is understood to have annoyed the club's board with his recent criticism of the club's transfer dealings, while support from Hammers players for their beleaguered boss was conspicuous by its absence yesterday.

Asked for his thoughts on the Upton Park faithful taunting Curbishley with such chants as "You're getting sacked in the morning", defender Matthew Upson replied: "I wasn't surprised."

"I think the fans had every right to be a little bit impatient. They have every right to be frustrated and if they're angry at the manager, then that's just something he needs to deal with," he continued.

Defeat on Saturday at home to Blackburn Rovers - now under the management of East London hate figure Paul Ince - would surely make Curbishley's position untenable.

According to The Independent, Bilic 'is closely following developments at West Ham and would want to take the job if it was offered to him even though, before this summer's European Championship, he signed a new two-year deal to coach his country for the World Cup campaign.

'There are, however, believed to be get-out clauses in his contract and the compensation payable to the Croatian Football Association would be minimal for the former defender, who became a cult hero at West Ham even though he only made 48 appearances, in 1996-97, before joining Everton. Bilic insisted, however, that he did not move before West Ham were safe from relegation.'

NEW DELAY FOR LIVERPOOL STADIUM

Liverpool have announced that the plans for their new stadium in Stanley Park have been delayed yet again.

The announcement, which came in a club statement, is not unexpected as it has been feared for some time that American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett were having trouble raising the funds for the £400million new ground, which will be built adjacent to the current Anfield site.

When the Americans took over 18 months ago they immediately redesigned previous plans and had to allow for new planning permission.

The current credit crunch is being blamed for the latest delay, even though enabling work has already started in and around Stanley Park.

The club statement said: "Our commitment to building a new world-class LFC stadium is undiminished. Like many other major development projects in the UK and overseas we are affected by global market conditions and as such work on the project will be delayed in the short term.

"We will use this period productively and revisit the plans for the stadium to increase its capacity to 73,000 seats."

Robinho badly advised - Calderon

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has hit out at Robinho's advisors as the debate about the Brazil international's future rumbles on.

With just four days remaining until the end of the transfer window there is still no definitive resolution to Robinho's possible move to Chelsea, although the latest Spanish media reports suggest Madrid have now decided to keep the player.

The Primera Liga champions have regularly insisted they want to retain the 24-year-old, but Chelsea were confident enough in their chances of landing the player to advertise replica Robinho shirts for sale on their official online store yesterday.

Robinho himself publicly stated last week he wanted to move to Chelsea, but Calderon believes the forward would be making a mistake leaving Madrid and has questioned the advice the player has been receiving.

"I think it's normal that a player says that he wants to leave and in the case of Robinho I accept that as being totally normal. It seems to me that it's a mistake, but it's his problem," said Calderon in an interview with Marca.

"I think that his representatives are advising him very badly and I have a lot of faith in the lad. I believe he has a lot of quality and could be successful here. But I say it again that I have to defend the interests of this club in the best manner possible."

Two of the players Madrid have been closely linked with bringing to the Bernabeu in recent months are Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, another Chelsea target.

Madrid's pursuit of Manchester United winger Ronaldo dominated the headlines for much of the summer, but the Portugal winger finally committed to staying at Old Trafford for at least another season.

When asked if he thought Ronaldo would one day be a Madrid player, possibly as soon as next summer, Calderon said: "The truth is I don't know. The player continues having a contract with his club and as such we cannot do anything.

"I can't say anything about the coming year either because I don't know what is going to happen. We don't even know if we are going to be here...we hope that he comes, touch wood, but in a year's time many things can happen.

"All the fans want to see a player like Cristiano Ronaldo here, but I am convinced that in the same manner that Manchester would love to see all our players in their team.

"Cristiano is not going to come now. As for the coming year, only God knows."

With regards to AC Milan playmaker Kaka, Calderon added: "It did not seem that Kaka's position needed to be covered, according to the coaching team.

"I have to say that a move for Kaka was a possibility this summer, but they have told me that we don't need a player like Kaka now."

- Robinho is adviced by the same kind of scum agents as Ronaldo is - you mofo
