Ashley Faces Drinking Charges

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley could face police charges after being caught breaking liquor laws at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday...

The Mirror reports that Ashley was caught on camera sculling a beer during the Magpies' 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal on Saturday.

While alcohol is sold at most Premier League venues, licensing laws restrict patrons from taking their beverages back to their seats - and Setanta's cameras pictured the billionaire sitting squarely among the Toon Army with pint in hand.

A Newcastle spokesperson said: "Mike was offered a drink which he thought was non-alcoholic so he took it in good faith." However, non-alcoholic beer is not available at the Emirates.

It remains unknown whether any action will be taken against Ashley.

Everton close on £3million United flop
http://www.fansfc.com/frontpage/fron...?newsid=189810

Everton Football Club hope to land Alan Smith before the transfer deadline.

The England international has been a huge flop at Newcastle United following his move from Manchester United last summer, and is out of favour under Kevin Keegan.

David Moyes is willing to give for former Leeds United forward the opportunity to kickstart his Premier League career at Goodison Park, and hopes to seal a move worth £3million.

Keegan is believed to be willing to listen to offers for Smith, who can operate in a midfield position or as a striker, which is the sort of versatility which appeals to the Toffees boss.

Lyon joint top after narrow win

Lyon moved back level on points with Marseille at the Ligue 1 summit on Sunday with a narrow 1-0 derby win at St Etienne.

Karim Benzema pounced 10 minutes into the second half - his fourth goal in as many games - and it was enough to fire the seven-time defending champions joint top of the table alongside OM on 10 points from four matches.

Earlier on Sunday, Lille came from behind to record their first win of the season, beating last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Bordeaux 2-1.

All looked to be going to plan for Laurent Blanc's team when Argentina international Fernando Cavenaghi opened the scoring in the 28th minute.

But the lead lasted only three minutes before Michel Bastos restored parity and then Ludovic Obraniak rubbed salt in the wounds 16 minutes from time with a stunning winner.

In Sunday's only other game, Toulouse and Rennes were each left wondering how they failed to score as both teams squandered some fine chances in a goalless draw.

Both clubs came into this game after enjoying strong starts to their season, but cancelled each other out as the chances went begging.

- 4 goals in 4 games. *sigh* Somebody call the Glazers and ask them to splash the cash on this amazing talent. Although Mido has three goals in three games so we might need to lok at him as well

Nolan Sorry About Fan Fracas
http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=843671

Bolton Wanderers captain Kevin Nolan has apologised for his heated encounter with a disgruntled supporter at the weekend...

The Trotters were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw in a see-sawing encounter against West Bromwich Albion at the Reebok Stadium on Sunday.

Gary Megson's men found the net twice only to have both strikes disallowed, while at the other end goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen more than earned his pay-packet with a number of crucial saves.

As ever, it was Nolan who copped the majority of the fans' abuse as he headed towards the tunnel. On this occasion, however, the 26-year-old could not help but retort.

Upset

"One of our fans was having a go and we had a few words. He was upset, I was upset and it got heated. I shouldn't have done it. I'd like to see him now to apologise," he told the Daily Mail.

"I won't tell you what he shouted. But I called him down to say, 'Come on, you explain to me what we're doing wrong'. I knew it was wrong straight away and I walked away.

"I'm an emotional lad and I love this club. I genuinely wanted to know what more he wants me to do? I'm running my socks off and trying my best. But fans pay to watch us win and have a right to have a go."

Nolan has played his entire career at Bolton, notching up 40 goals in 279 Premier League appearances to date.

And as one of the game's few remaining one-club men, the former England under-21 understands the extra responsibility placed upon him.

12th Man

"I've come up through the ranks, so people are going to look at me first. I'm happy with that," he said.

"They're probably a little less forgiving of me. I have to deal with it. It happens to Steven Gerrard and Gary Neville. That's life.

"When they are behind us, as we saw at Chelsea and Middlesbrough last season, we can do something special. We need them as 12th man, putting fear into the away team."

After being knocked out of the Carling Cup by League One minnows Northampton Town last week, Bolton will need all the support they can get to steady their already-wobbling season.

Napoli Fan Arrested; Weapons Seized
http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=843441

A Napoli fan has been arrested by police, who also seized several weapons found during their Serie A opener against AS Roma…

oma and Napoli played a good match of football at the Stadio Olimpic which ended 1-1, Alberto Aquilani putting the Romans ahead before Marek Hamsik equalized for the visitors, however the rivalry was not only on the pitch, it seems. Unfortunately, a young man was arrested after the proceedings.

One of the fans was arrested after the match for possession of a knife. The 22-year-old was confirmed to be a Napoli supporter.

Also during the match in Rome, the Roman police found and seized several weapons. Knives, fireworks, flares, and even a hammer among other dangerous items were taken by police from the nearby Napoli supporters section.

Football related violence has been a much discussed topic in Italy, especially after events in February of 2007 that led to police officer Fillipo Raciti losing his life in Sicily.

That is not an isolated incident, as over the years stadium security and fan violence seem to have become more and more of an issue. Last season, for instance, some of the matches saw travelling fans banned from the stadium by the Lega Calcio in anticipation of problems that could occur.

Italy's constant problems of fan violence is thought to be one of the reasons that their bid to host the Euro 2012 tournament failed.

CELTIC COACH LENNON ATTACKED IN STREET
http://www.football365.com/story/0,1...078547,00.html

Former Celtic captain Neil Lennon was treated in hospital early on Monday after being assaulted in a popular eating and drinking area.

Lennon, now a coach at the club, received treatment for minor injuries following an incident in Glasgow's west end hours after Sunday's Old Firm clash.

Police were called to Ashton Lane, well known for trendy pubs and restaurants, at around 12.25am.

The former midfielder from Northern Ireland was taken to hospital and later released after treatment.

He has not filed a complaint with Strathclyde Police, who said inquiries into the incident were continuing.

A force spokeswoman said: "Police were called at 12.25am to a report of a 37-year-old man assaulted in Ashton Lane.

"The injured man was taken to hospital then released after treatment for

minor injuries.

"He did not wish to make a complaint; however, police inquiries are ongoing

into the incident.''

The incident came hours after Lennon was in the Celtic dugout during his club's 4-2 home defeat to Rangers.

Lennon left Celtic in 2007 and joined Nottingham Forest.

He later played for the Wycombe Wanderers before returning to Celtic as a

first-team coach.

Scans confirm Torres fears
by Ben Blackmore, 01 September 2008
http://sport.setanta.com/en/Sport/Ne...o-three-weeks/

Fernando Torres is almost certain to miss Liverpool’s crunch clash with Manchester United after scans confirmed he has torn his hamstring.

The Spain superstar has been ruled out for ‘two to three weeks’, after he pulled up after 25 minutes of Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa.

With United scheduled to visit Anfield on September 13, even a two-week absence would surely rule Torres out Liverpool’s first title showdown of the season.

A statement on The Reds’ official website announced: "A scan this afternoon has confirmed a hamstring tear in Fernando's right leg.

“He is expected to be out for between two and three weeks.”

Torres will now undergo intensive rehabilitation during the international period, but Liverpool will know they face the possibility of facing United without both he and Steven Gerrard.

Meanwhile, The Reds have confirmed Andriy Voronin has left the club.

Curbishley quits as West Ham boss

Alan Curbishley has resigned as manager of Premier League club West Ham United.

Curbishley tendered his resignation on Wednesday and it was accepted by West Ham owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson.

The 50-year-old had grown disillusioned at the club's transfer policy, which had led to the summer sales of Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney.

A statement on the club's website read: "We can confirm we have accepted Alan's resignation as it is in the best interests of both parties."

The statement added: "We wish Alan all the success in the future. A shortlist of candidates is being drawn up and an announcement will be made in due course about the new manager."

West Ham also moved to justify the summer departures of Ferdinand and McCartney, stating that the sales were "right for the club" and "based on our best long-term interests".

"In the past week, agreement could not be reached with Ferdinand on a new contract to replace his original deal that had just two years left to run," the club added.

"(And) McCartney handed in a formal written transfer request after failing to resolve his personal reasons for wanting a move away."

Curbishley took over from Alan Pardew as West Ham manager in December 2006 and was promised significant transfer funds to help achieve the objective of qualifying for the Champions League within five years.

He signed the likes of Kieron Dyer, Lucas Neill and Freddie Ljungberg during a summer of lavish spending in 2007, but his terms of reference changed this summer.

Gudmundsson told Curbishley he had to reduce the club's wage bill and that money was to be focused on training and medical facilities rather than signings.

Full-back Valon Behrami, who joined from Lazio for £5m, was West Ham's only significant signing of the summer.

Yet first-team squad members John Pantsil, Bobby Zamora, Richard Wright, Ferdinand and McCartney all departed.

Technical director Gianluca Nani has been responsible for the club's transfer policy since being appointed to his role in March.

Thomas Injury Leaves Pompey Depleted

http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=847544

Portsmouth face having a dearth of personnel available to fill their left-flank following an injury to new signing Jerome Thomas, which is expected to keep him sidelined for up to three months.

The 25-year-old wide-man has suffered a stress-fracture in base of his spine, ruling him out of action for the foreseeable future.

The former Charlton star had been filling-in on the left-wing for Pompey, with Harry Redknapp already having Niko Kranjcar ruled out with an ankle knock.

The Croatian is due an operation on his ankle ligaments, and he is not expected to return until late November.

Although Thomas appeared against Manchester United last Monday, it has emerged that the winger sustained the injury prior to the encounter.

Portsmouth have had to readjust their formation of late, having a spate of injuries with which to contend. They have Armand Traore and Nadir Belhadj as their only recognisable left-siders, although both favour the defensive berth.

Harry Redknapp told the News: "Jerome is out for 12 weeks, which is another big blow for us. We're not quite sure when it happened, probably the day before the Manchester United game in training.

"At the time, he complained a bit but wanted to play so much and passed a fitness test. He did well in that game, too. Now it looks as though he could need an operation to get it sorted, which is really disappointing for all of us.

"The lad gives you something different – he's got pace, can run at players and cause defences all sorts of problems. With Niko also out for quite a long time, it leaves us a bit short on the left there."

Downing agent arrested for fraud
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,195...089965,00.html

A man and woman have been arrested following a complaint to Police by England winger Stewart Downing, Middlesbrough have confirmed.

Downing approached his club Middlesbrough about concerns over the way his 'company's affairs' were being handled.

Now Downing has made a complaint and the Football Association are now liaising between Cleveland Police and the club.

Police have confirmed an arrest has been made.

"Cleveland Police can confirm that officers from their economic crime unit (fraud section) have arrested a 50-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman from the Newcastle-upon-Tyne area on suspicion of offences of conspiracy to defraud and money laundering," said a Police spokesman.

"They are currently being questioned by police at a police station in the Northumbria area."
Boro confirmation

A club spokesman said: "Middlesbrough Football Club can confirm that it was approached some time ago by Stewart Downing with concerns he had regarding the way his and his company's affairs have been handled.

"The club advised him to involve lawyers and accountants to investigate these concerns.

"Having established his position, Stewart made a formal complaint to Cleveland Police who have since been investigating matters.

"This led to the arrest today of a man and a woman relating to the investigation.

"The Football Association are aware of the position and are continuing to monitor its progress."

An FA spokesman added: "The FA can confirm that it was made aware by Middlesbrough FC of concerns relating to the actions of a licensed football agent in connection to their player Stewart Downing's financial affairs.

"The FA then acted as liaison between the club and Cleveland Police. We will continue to liaise with both parties to ensure that any potential breaches of football regulations are dealt with at the appropriate time."

Al Ciddeh Line Up Mega-Kaka Bid

http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=847470

Manchester City’s new Arab owner Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim is planning a mega-money bid for Milan superstar Kaka next summer, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Al-Fahim has revealed that his Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG) company, who are set to take full control of City in the coming weeks, are serious about bringing the best players in the world to the City of Manchester Stadium.

Having already helped snap up Real Madrid star Robinho in a sensational deadline day deal on Monday, it was also revealed yesterday that ADUG were looking to make a £135m bid for Man Utd hero Cristiano Ronaldo.

Now the Daily Telegraph claims that ADUG have their eyes on Milan superstar Kaka too, and could launch a similar bid to bring the Brazilian to Eastlands next summer.

Kaka has been constantly linked with a move to Chelsea over the summer, and has been tipped to join them next year.

However, Man City may look to repeat their Robinho heroics, and once again outbid their rivals for the Brazilian, who may be attracted to a move by the presence in Manchester of national team colleagues Robinho, Elano and Jo.

Sevilla chief slams Levy

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,195...090243,00.html

Del Nido accuses Spurs chairman of hypocrisy

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been accused of hypocrisy over his reaction to the Dimitar Berbatov transfer.

The Bulgarian striker sealed a £30.75million move to Manchester United on deadline day after being picked up by Sir Alex Ferguson at the airport.

Levy was unhappy with the manner of United's pursuit all summer and also reported Liverpool to the Premier League over their approach for Robbie Keane.

Spurs eventually dropped their complaints as both players moved on, but Levy voiced his feelings again on Tuesday as he called for a review of the transfer system.

However, Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido has now criticised Levy for his conduct.

Disrupted

Del Nido is still angry about the way Tottenham landed coach Juande Ramos last October and believes justice has been done.

"The way that Ramos flew the coop and abandoned his team en route to London last year totally disrupted our season and now I'm pleased that Spurs are being paid back in kind over the Berbatov transfer. Their complaints are hypocrisy personified," Del Nido said in the Evening Standard.

Del Nido also hit out at Levy over his attempts to sign Spain international Diego Capel from Sevilla.

"For months now they've [Spurs] been trying to sign Capel and sending emissaries to try and persuade us to sell," explained Del Nido.

"We told them what our understanding of the player's worth was and therefore what the minimum we would demand in order to let Capel go.

"But it appears they couldn't pay that price so they didn't get him. I must admit that if it had been any other team (than Spurs) the price I'd have quoted to sign Capel would have been lower.

"In fact there is no point in telling a lie the price would have been considerably lower. Now they've missed out on him and we won't sell Capel to Spurs."

Mafia Behind Serie A Violence - Police Chief
http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=847447

The head of the Italian police Antonio Manganelli believes that the violent groups of Ultra’ fans are linked with the various clans of the Mafia.

The announcement comes just days after Napoli fans caused havoc in Rome and Naples and just hours after the San Paolo-based club was handed a fan ban.

The game between Genoa and Milan in week two will also have its doors closed to Rossoneri fans.

Manganelli believes the violence which has soiled calcio’s image once again has deeper links to the Italian criminal underworld.

“We believe that there is an influence of organised crime behind the incidents which happened on the weekend,” said the chief of Police.

“We are launching a major investigation to verify if these incidents are linked to Mafia criminality.”

The head of police in Napoli Antonino Puglisi echoed Manganelli’s concerns and he believes the Camorra (Napolitan Mafia) are behind the ultras, backing them with what they need to cause trouble.

“We are working towards the hypothesis that all the trouble is linked with organised crime and we know that these groups of fans have links with the Napolitan gangs,” added Puglisi.

It’s not the first and it won’t be the last time we hear of violence dominating the Serie A headlines.

The Italian authorities just cannot find a way of dealing with the violence leading to speculation that it is linked with the Mafia.

Bruce 'so close' to landing Frazier

Wigan boss Steve Bruce has revealed Tottenham pinched Frazier Campbell from under his nose - and also scuppered Henri Camara's move to Stoke.

Bruce had arranged a season-long deal with Manchester United for the highly-rated young striker, only to see his plans scuppered by Spurs' late intervention.

As part of the transfer which took Dimitar Berbatov to Old Trafford, Spurs demanded Campbell's services on loan to bolster their striking options.

Bruce admitted he was only alerted to the forward's availability late on in the transfer window and had high hopes of getting his man, with Camara then due to join the Potters in a £1million deal.

He told the Wigan Evening Post: "We were an inch away from getting the boy. At 8.30pm on deadline night I thought it was a done deal - we had agreed everything with Manchester United and Sir Alex.

"Unfortunately I then got a telephone call from Sir Alex at about 9pm saying the deal was off because Campbell was having to go to Tottenham.

"Once he became ravelled up in the Berbatov deal, that scuppered us, which was a big shame.

"The kid is a good young player, he would have been a really good addition for us and was coming on a year's loan.

"At the weekend I hadn't envisaged doing any incoming business but then Campbell became possible because a proposed permanent transfer to Hull collapsed.

"That opened the door, I tried to get in and I thought we were going to be successful until right at the end."

BREAKING NEWS 2.15PM: Posh manager Darren Ferguson has revealed that he is back in the hunt for Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson.

Ferguson hopes to secure the services of the 20 year-old on loan in time to play in the League One local derby at Northampton on September 13.

Gibson has yet to break into the United first team, but played 21 games on loan at Wolves in the Championship last season.

He scored a spectacular long-range goal against Posh for United in this summer's pre-season friendly between the teams.

Tev tips moneybags City for title tilt

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...093571,00.html

Carlos Tevez believes Manchester City must now be considered title contenders following their billionaire takeover and capture of Robinho.

City have received a major cash injection from their prospective new owners and are now regarded as the richest club in the world.

The Abu Dhabi United Group signalled their ambitions by splashing out a British record fee of £32.5million on Robinho and Tevez believes the Brazilian will make City a better side.

"Robinho will greatly improve the quality of Man City. They will be much closer to the top this year," the Manchester United forward is quoted as saying in The Sun.

"He's one of those great players that people want to go and watch because he has a lot of fun playing.

"Robinho is one of the game's best entertainers but the Premier League defenders won't see it that way.

"The players who have to mark him will be very uncomfortable this season.

"City's squad is looking so strong now. With Robinho, Pablo Zabaleta, Martin Petrov and Elano they have real quality."

Tevez is also looking forward to the Manchester derbies, with United keen on gaining revenge after losing both games against their bitter rivals last term.

And the Argentina star admitted City defender Micah Richards was the most difficult opponent he came up against last season.

"With all their impressive new signings, the two Manchester derby games could be really significant this season. They are now even more important to win," added Tevez.

"We lost to City twice in the league last year but, even though they are stronger now, we look forward to gaining revenge.

"They have quality and they also have the defender who marked me the best last season - Micah Richards. Well-built, fast and strong, he is a very good defender."

- It's a real shame that Micah Richards is playing for the wrong team in Manchester. I would really love for him to be a red devil. He is a beast and will be one of the best defenders in the world for years to come.

Ryan Giggs: Man City have the money but Man United will always be bigger club

Ryan Giggs has hit back at Manchester City’s claims that they will become the biggest club in the world - and says they will struggle to ever match United’s status.

United winger Giggs says that it will take more than money for their city rivals to become the world’s No 1 team.

"City have the richest owner in the world but I still see United as the biggest club in the world," the 34-year-old said.

"United have a status and history that it has taken years to build up. It stretches back to the Busby Babes, to players like Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best. It will be very interesting to see what happens at City, but what we have at United is very special.

"You see it when we go abroad in pre-season, you appreciate how popular United is. We have fans in India, China, South America. That popularity is a result of our history. Money can’t necessarily get you that."

City, managed by former Manchester United favourite Mark Hughes, are targeting a Champions League place this season but Giggs says their success in breaking into the Premier League’s ‘big four’ will depend on how well the new signings work together.

He said: "A lot will depend on the players they buy, how quickly they gel and how they handle the attention. People have been asking for a long time now if somebody can break into the group. People will expect that club to be City and there will be a lot of pressure on them each season now. Everybody’s attention will be on Manchester."

Sir Alex Ferguson was almost beaten to his main transfer target Dimitar Berbatov on transfer deadline day as Manchester City’s new owners had a bid of over £30 million accepted by Tottenham for the striker. However, the Bulgarian eventually joined United and Giggs said he was "delighted" with the deal.

He said: "I played against Berbatov last season and he stood out, really impressed. He has great technique and will provide a physical presence that we’re missing up front. With Louis Saha gone, centre forward was perhaps the one area where we were weak."

Sergio set to pen 10-year Real deal
http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...093657,00.html

Sergio Ramos, who is set to be offered a 10-year contract next week, has spoken of his desire to spend the rest of his career with Real Madrid.

Madrid directors are eager to keep hold of their star players following the sudden departure of Robinho to Manchester City.

"It's been some great news. I'm very happy in Madrid and it's my desire to retire at this club," 22-year-old Ramos told Spanish newspaper AS.

"I feel happy here with the club, the city and with the fans.

"Now my objective is to play as well as possible and help the national team and Madrid to achieve their goals. I'm going to give everything for Spain and Real, that's for sure."

It is believed Madrid's intentions are to make goalkeeper Iker Casillas club captain in 2011, following the expiry of Raul's contract, with Ramos stepping up to vice-captain.

Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben, Rafael van der Vaart, Pepe, Ezequiel Garay (who will join next summer), Gonzalo Higuain, Fernando Gago, Marcelo, Javi Garcia, Miguel Torres and Ruben De la Red are all also in line to receive similar deals eventually, while Raul, Guti and Ruud van Nistelrooy have already signed their so-called 'contract for life'.

Keegan misses training once again
http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...094329,00.html

Kevin Keegan's future as Newcastle manager remains shrouded in doubt after he failed to take charge of training for a third successive day.

The Magpies boss missed training again on Thursday, with no official explanation from the club for his absence.

Rumours began circulating on Tuesday that the Geordie legend had left the club, just eight months after returning for a second stint at the helm.

Keegan is reported to be unhappy at much of the club's transfer activity being conducted without his approval, after owner Mike Ashley brought in Dennis Wise as executive director (football).

The sale of James Milner to Aston Villa went against the former England manager's wishes, with the winger handing in a transfer request after the club's refusal to offer him an improved contract.

Newcastle confirmed on Wednesday that talks with Keegan were 'ongoing', and insisted that he had not been sacked, or resigned from his post.

But with no further public announcements emerging from the North East club, and no sign of Keegan at their Darsley Park training base, speculation continues to rage.

The club's fans have been quick to show their support for the man regarded as a footballing Messiah on Tyneside and have already threatened to boycott matches should his time at the helm be brought to an abrupt and unseemly end.

Ribery closing in on Bayern return
http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...094623,00.html

Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery has returned to training for the first time since tearing ankle ligaments while playing for France at Euro 2008.

The 25-year-old underwent surgery on his left ankle over the summer after suffering the injury early in France's final group game against Italy, which they lost 2-0.

But the former Marseille man trained with his club-mates on Thursday as he stepped up his recovery.

Bayern coach Jurgen Klinsmann told the club's official website: "We are working every day with much zest on Franck. He is getting sharper and sharper and is feeling more stable."

Klinsmann added Ribery should be ready for a return to Bundesliga action by "the end of the month".

Rivaldo explains Bunyodkor switch

World Cup-winner Rivaldo says he turned down offers from Australia and Japan to join Asian Champions League quarter-finalists Bunyodkor.

The 36-year-old Brazilian playmaker arrived in Tashkent on Wednesday to officially complete his move to the Uzbek League leaders, who were until recently known as Kuruvchi, after his contract with Greek Super League side AEK Athens was terminated by mutual consent.

Bunyodkor meet Iran's Saipa in the last eight of the Champions League later this month, with the first leg taking place at the Enghelab-E-Eslami Stadium on September 17 before the return leg a week later at the MHSK Stadium in Tashkent.

"I had a contract with AEK Athens, but my contract was coming to an end and I was invited by clubs from Australia and Japan," Rivaldo told the club's official website.

"At the same time I got a serious offer from Uzbekistan which I accepted. I am glad I decided to accept the offer. I came here to play and show the fans.

"I want to help my new team in the Champions League. The club made a serious offer and now I will try and show my worth and make as much effort I can to help them be successful."

Bunyodkor currently boast the maximum of three foreign players allowed to participate in the Asian Champions League.

And general director Tavakkal Kadirovich is hoping the acquisition of the veteran South American will help the team achieve continental glory.

"Negotiations lasted two months. We were helped by out close partner Emmanuel Petit and he negotiated with Rivaldo's agent," said Ismailov.

"If you look at the trophies Rivaldo has won, there is only the Asian Champions League left to win."

In July, Bunyodkor sensationally claimed to have signed Samuel Eto'o from Barcelona, but the move failed to materialise despite the Cameroon striker arriving in Tashkent.

Capello defends Rooney record

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,195...114787,00.html

England boss unconcerned by striker's international form

England manager Fabio Capello insists Wayne Rooney is not becoming frustrated by his lack of international goals.

The Manchester United star has netted only five times for England since scoring twice against Croatia at Euro 2004.

Rooney endured another frustrating night as England opened their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign with a victory over Andorra on Saturday.

But Capello insists Rooney is not fazed by critics of his international form, and is backing the 22-year-old to impress against Croatia in Zagreb on Wednesday.

Perfect

"The game against Andorra was not the perfect game for Rooney," said Capello. "He tried to touch the ball a lot.

"He did one fantastic pass for the second goal and also one other in the first half for Theo Walcott.

"He needs space. Rooney needs space to work. I hope in the next game, he will find the space against a team who will not have nine players behind the ball for most of the game.

"Is Rooney getting frustrated? No. I believe that when you start the season, the biggest players need more time to find their form. He has to find the form.

Dangerous

"He plays well, but he is not fantastic, but, for me, it is important for the team, the movement he is trying."

Not so good news -TORRES BOOST FOR LIVERPOOL

He'll be fit to face Manchester United
http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/sport/article22440.ece
By CHRIS BASCOMBE, 07/09/2008

FERNANDO TORRES is on course for a shock return against Manchester United on Saturday.

The Liverpool striker limped off against Aston Villa last weekend with a tight hamstring but the injury is not as serious as first feared.

The Spaniard has already returned to training and club doctors are optimistic he will have recovered in time to face the champions.

Reds skipper Steven Gerrard is less likely to feature as the midfielder, 28, had a groin operation last week.

He is back in light training but the club is torn between having him available and bringing him back too early and aggravating the long- term injury.

United's Gill laughs off $250M offer for Ronaldo, but would entertain Ronaldo offer

http://www.tsn.ca/ctvnews/?id=248807

Manchester, England (Sports Network) - Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill has laughed off claims that Manchester City are willing to spend nearly $250 million on Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sulaiman Al-Fahim, the billionaire businessman at the center of the Manchester City takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group, said this week that he would be willing to spend the sum on landing the 23-year-old United star.

However, Gill told the BBC: "It was an interesting comment, I think it's a fan's-type comment.

"It's interesting that when Sir Alex Ferguson mentioned the Dimitar Berbatov signing in advance, complaints were made to the Premier League.

"He mentioned Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas in the same article so I think we'll treat that with a pinch of salt.

"I've never met the gentleman. That's a fantastic amount of money and would turn the industry upside down so I can't believe he's serious at those sorts of levels.

"Ultimately we'd discuss any offer with Alex and the owners, as that sort of money is very large for one person. But we aren't in the market to sell our best players."

Juve: City playing 'fantasy football'

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...114195,00.html

Juventus president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has laughed off reports of a possible bid for Gianluigi Buffon by mega-rich Manchester City.

City's new Abu Dhabi-based backers broke the British transfer record to sign Brazil playmaker Robinho from Real Madrid on Monday and it is likely more big names will follow when the transfer window re-opens in January, with Buffon one of the legion of names linked with the Eastlands club.

But Gigli insists no amount of money would prise Buffon away from the Stadio Olimpico.

"It's fantasy football," he told Sky Italia. "This summer there was another case of fantasy football, to be precise the story of David Trezeguet to Barcelona.

"That was fantasy football, and this is the same."

Buffon, who once again proved why he is rated as one of the world's best goalkeepers on Saturday as Italy beat Cyprus in World Cup qualifying, is reportedly a £56million target for City.

But Gigli insisted the 30-year-old remains a key figure at Juve.

He added: "Buffon's price doesn't interest me, what interests me is to have him with us as a man, as a sportsman and as a lynchpin at Juventus.

"And I am happy that he helped Italy beat Cyprus."

Robinho fires warning to Chelsea - and Micah dreams of Robinho

New Manchester City signing Robinho has vowed to make Chelsea pay following their failure to capture the Brazilian star this summer.

The 24-year-old has admitted it was his first intenion to join Chelsea after deciding to leave Real Madrid.

But the two clubs failed to agree a fee, leaving the door open for City to swoop on deadline day after a shock cash injection from the Abu Dubai United Group.

Robinho, who is currently on international duty with Brazil, slammed Chelsea for not sealing the deal and intends to show them exactly what they missed out on when he makes his City debut against Luiz Felipe Scolari's men next week.

"It is Real's fault that I did not sign for Chelsea but it is also Chelsea'a fault," Robinho told The People.

"I don't think they managed it very well. They waited until the last minute and it turned out badly for them.

"My head was at Chelsea but now that is forgotten. I know Scolari is upset with me but these things happen.

"When I play against them I will show that they were wrong not to raise their offer.

"City presented the offer five hours before the deadline and until then I had not been thinking about them at all."

New team-mate Micah Richards was equally surprised by City's late move for Robinho and is hoping the Blues can make a few more shock signings in January.

"I was glued to the TV last Monday listening to all these bids we were making for world-class players," he told the Sunday Mirror.

"In the end I fell asleep and just after midnight my best mate rang me and said, 'We've signed Robinho.'

"I thought I was still dreaming and said, 'Yeah, whatever.' But then I turned the TV back on and there it was.

"I mean, he's the kind of player you would usually only pick for City if you were playing a computer game.

"Hopefully it is a sign of things to come and City will be winning trophies and playing in the Champions League every year.

"If the things the new owner has said are true, this is City's chance to grab football by the scruff of the neck - and I can't wait."

Zidane: Don't Blame Mexes

http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=853855

Former France World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane has asked that defender Phillipe Mexes not be blamed for the World Cup qualifying defeat against Austria last Saturday.

The Roma defender certainly did not have a good game as France succumbed to a shock 3-1 defeat against Karel Bruckner's Austria.

Former Juventus and Real Madrid player Zidane spoke about Les Bleus’ poor performance, and in particular, Mexes after the loss.

"We must let the team work in peace," pleaded Zidane. "What happened last night was enough. With some work we can solve everything."

Hammers confirm four-name shortlist

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...112919,00.html

West Ham have confirmed four names are in the frame to be their new boss - Slaven Bilic, Gianfranco Zola, Roberto Donadoni and Michael Laudrup.

Hammers director Mike Lee said that both Zola and Donadoni had impressed hugely in their interviews, while Laudrup will meet club officials on Monday.

Lee also made it clear that West Ham would not wait until January for Bilic, though he did not rule out him staying as Croatia coach on a part-time basis for the October matches.

Lee told BBC Radio Five Live: "There's no favourite at the moment, we have set up a proper selection process.

"We have been surprised and pleased by the number of applications we have had and we are moving towards a short shortlist and ideally have a manager in place in time for the West Brom match next week.

"Slaven Bilic could potentially be on that shortlist but it depends very much upon his availability. If for whatever reason he was not available until January in terms of working with us I'm afraid that will rule him out.

"We have a very strong shortlist and it's going to be a tough decision with some exciting candidates.

"From the meetings that have taken place so far the two that have really shone have been Donadoni and Zola."

West Ham are resigned to waiting until after Croatia's match against England on Wednesday before they can speak to Bilic, but would welcome the chance to talk beforehand and have been in discussions with his representatives.

The fact Zola and Donadoni are Italians could increase their chances given that West Ham's director of football Gianluca Nani is a compatriot, and that they would be much happier with the continental-style working relationship than Alan Curbishley was.

West Ham's selection process has already ruled out Gerard Houllier and the former Scotland midfielder John Collins, plus former Ajax boss Martin Olsen.

Che put £121m fee on Villa's head

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...113026,00.html

Valencia president Vicente Soriano has said that Manchester City would have to pay £121million in order to land David Villa's signature.

Villa had been persistently linked with a transfer away from the Mestalla following his impressive showing for Spain at Euro 2008.

A move during the summer failed to materialise, however reports on the final day of the transfer window suggested Premier League club City had attempted to secure his services.

The new owner of City, Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, has intimated that Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment (ADUG) could back a major overhaul at the club in January with Villa thought to be high on the side's list of targets.

But Soriano has warned the Eastlands outfit off Villa, insisting only a world record offer would see the 26-year-old depart Los Che.

He said in the Daily Star: "They would have to pay his release cause - £121million."

Villa's agent, Jose Luis Tamargo, added: "Villa has said he intends to remain in Valencia, where they want to keep him for a long while.

"He has never wanted to play in English football."
