You only say they offer more than carrick because they brake from midfield and attack and we see this more in games..(hargreaves vs lyon) if you actuali watch carricks display he tackles with ease and is so calm on the ball in hard situations...as dlan4237 said...defensive players arent rewarded as much as attacking..

carrick against west ham. i swear this is no lie. i sit in the north stand near the corner flag. he passed the ball back to vds, not once not twice but seven times! that seems to be his fave pass. when hes under pressure he quickly passes the ball to play other players into trouble. recieving the ball and then passing the ball to the next red shirt (or vds green in carricks case) you see is no rocket science. there's no invention from him. plain. simple. ineffective. boring. i hope to god he doesnt play in the final.

I agree with you on your first point.

Carrick passes backwards far too often. It's difficult for him to get forward when playing alongside Scholes and, if he's in a midfield with 3 in the centre, he's usually the deepest but I still think he should look to move and pass the ball forward more.

With his passing ability he could be much more creative. It's like he's scared to give the ball away - perhaps it's a confidence thing.

i also agree with you. but is there really room for lack of confidence for long long periods in the season, at this level? at a club like utd?

I personally think hes put a spell on fergie..and pulled wool over his eyes somehow. cos he certainly hasnt fooled the Don.. Fabio 'the DON' cappello!

Not sure I agree with all these Actim index figures. Sometimes they dont
show the entire picture. Recently Ive come to the conclusion that Carrick
shouldnt be in our first 11. His last few appearences have been unacceptable
if Im being honest. Lots of sloppy passing which is uncharacteristic of the man,

too much passing back and sideways and not enough penetration going
forward. Even when he scored against West Ham, half the crowd were
screaming for him to run into the space and take a shot. He took his time
but the defence never closed him down. He should be bursting into these
positions and looking to crack in a few shots.

Anyway I think Scholes and Hargo are far more effective in the middle.
Since the day we signed Hargo Ive always said that they would be my
fave midfield duo. Then there are Fletch and Anderson to consider as well.
They have both had good seasons and are surely in with a shout of playing.

I like Carrick and he has been pretty good this season up till recently, but
we have better than him in our squad, yet Fergie continues to play him.

I said in another thread that I wouldnt be surprised to see Carrick dropped for
Wigan and/or Chelsea games.

Suprised to see him that low. I'd say Actim stats are more accurate than Opta. The amount of variables they take into account shows that. They are not based on one or two killer passes that people will remember and stand out. They are based on the whole season, which explains a few things; he didn't start the season great, so those 'poor' games will overshaddow or drown out his current form, which is the reason Fergie is picking him week in week out.

good post...i think your right in actim not always giving the full picture. Carrick is not a united player in my reckoning..period..and alot of other peoples too. There's a guy who sits next to my at OT. he's been a season ticket holder for over 30 years. he reckons he hasnt seen a worse player than carrick in the last 30 years in united colours! i think thats bit too harsh. a certain kleberson and djemba comes to mind..but my point is hes too much of a passenger..no progression..

I'm of the opinion that ball retention is very important in football. English players generally are poor at keeping possession of the football. That's why I like Carrick - he keeps the ball moving and, usually, retains posession very well.

Unfortunately for Carrick, decision-making is also a key part of football and you can't tell me that with players like Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez there is no movement/options up front for players like Carrick to look for.

I think Carrick has the potential to be a wonderful player but he needs to know when to play the ball forward. If he developed an instinct for the killer pass then he could become a top class midfield player and let's face it - if he can't do that at United he can't do it anywhere.

He may not be a star player, but surely he's worthy of a higher spot?

Anyone have a list?
