I agree with you on your first point.
Carrick passes backwards far too often. It's difficult for him to get forward when playing alongside Scholes and, if he's in a midfield with 3 in the centre, he's usually the deepest but I still think he should look to move and pass the ball forward more.
With his passing ability he could be much more creative. It's like he's scared to give the ball away - perhaps it's a confidence thing.
