Wow........ what are you on and where can I buy some?
Tell you what. I actually think Mexes is a very good player and so does Fergie, because he really tried to sign him, BUT to say he is better than Rio is an insult to Rio Ferdinand.
The only way I could explain this is that you either don't watch Ferdinand closely enough or just don't rate him at all.
Prior to 06/07 Rio did little to justify his price tag, but from the 06/07 season onwards he has been the best central defender in the world. I'll admit that he had a few lapses in 06/07, but he was rock solid in 07/08.
Overall the last two seasons he has been the best centre back in the world.
I don't want to rank any players, but here are some central defenders that I rate very highly:
- Ferdinand
- Vidic
- Carvalho
- Mertesacker
- Ramos (better as a RB but also a very formidable CB)
- Mexes
- Nesta
- Maldini (a few seasons ago this man was like a God)
- Distin (just like him, always seems to play well when I saw him play at City or now at Pompey)
I also have to mention Micah Richards. This kid is a beast and had an absolute stormer against us last season. His partnership with Dunne has been good and in one or two seasons might be one of the top defenders in Europe.
Back to Ferdinand - the man is at the top of his game at the moment and since he has gotten rid of his concentration lapses, he's been the best in the business.
If you put down every trait a world-class CB needed, he has it and on top of that, he is super comfortable with the ball and can bring it forward plus pass it, instead of just hoofing it away.
Trust me, I used to be a Rio doubter, but he has proven his worth and now deserves the accolades.
