Rio-Best in World?

Fergie reckons he is: http://www.sportinglife.com/football...d&PREV_SEASON=

Pally reckons he is: http://www.sportinglife.com/football...d&PREV_SEASON=

I reckon he is. He has it all for me: pace, tackling, compusure, height,
leadership, quality, silky skills, determination and he has lifted the CL.
Is Rio the best defender in the world?
Who would be up there with him?
Say maybe a top 3 or top 5.

He for me is the best CB in the world at the moment. Vidic is up there in the top 5 in the country and even Europe. Terry and Carvalho should also get a mention but I think the Rio--Vidic partnership is better. Nesta wasn't too bad few seasons back and Skertal looks okay. Agger also looked class when he played.

Was gonna just say:

1. Rio
2. Vidic
3. Evra
4. Wes
5. Gary Neville

but that may be a bit swayed by my preferences!

Without any United players

1. Sergio ramos
2. Marquez
3. Cannavaro
4. Nesta
5. Lucio

Then Combined i'd have

1. Rio
2. Sergio Ramos
3. Vidic
4. Marquez
5. Cannavaro

I'm just rating them on the way I think they rate right now.

Good list Murph though we may have to be fair and put in the likes of Carvalho
and even Terry. Pepe is pretty good also as are Dunne, Laursen and Toure.
Also Mertesacker and Lahm are pretty classy as well.

Couldnt bring myself to put Terry in there. Carvalho is probably worth a spot alright.
Yea forgot about Lahm as well, really rate him highly although he had a disaster
against Spain in the euros. Think the goal was Lehmans fault in fairness to him though.
Dunne is also quality, wish he had of left city!

Fergie said on the 06/07 season review on Vidic:

'To my mind he's the best centre half in the league'

Make your mind up Fergie

.OFCOURSE
Rio is the best defender in the world and who dont agree with that is a disgrace
Rio is one of the rare defenders who can score defend and assist in one game
Rio is definitely the world best defender right now
he can mark all kind of defenders
even though he is not the best to mark beast strikers (drogba)
Rio is one of the rare defenders who can score by his legs
also he have a powerful shots
Rio have a great awareness, reads the play well and "never a dull moment"
Rio is loyal to the club and have a good attitude (not the best attitude but not bad attitude)
Plus sometimes he can make a nasty trick
he have a great character he always speak against racism and as they say "he is a nice guy"
cool person
Great Leader Mighty Defender!

I have to disagree with Ramos being one of the best. He is definately one of the best RB's in the world but he gets caught out of position far too much at CB, though he is still young so he could definately get better.

I think Rio is definately the best CB in the world atm. Unfortunately Terry is/will be the one who gets more credit from the press because the english media prefer a player who appears to have more heart than talent.

3 or 4 years ago he used to be fairly mistake-prone or have lapses in concentration but in the last few years he has matured and is now not only playing at an incredibly high level, but he has turned into somewhat of a leader. Like Pally said Vidic definately brings out the best in him because Rio's only flaw is that he doesn't 'stick his head in' in the way that Vidic does, though he has improved a lot in this respect.

For me his performances against Liverpool away, Roma away, and the two Barca legs were as good as any performance I've seen from a Manutd defender.

He has definately 'stepped up' since Gazza has been injured, hopefully he'll maintain his leadership because with all due respect to Gazza, I think Rio is looked upon as the leader now. You saw at the players awards Ronaldo, Anderson and Nani point to Rio's picture and praise him.

The top 2 CB's in the world IMO are: Rio and Nesta (when fit).
After that theres a list of players who are very close and all have an arguement for being the 'best of the rest.' Calvalho, Vidic, Cannavaro, Lucio, Mattarazzi (before E08), Gallas, Terry, Bramble..just kidding

Now that I actually sat and though about it there aren't that many top quality CB's in world atm, although the likes of Richards, Garay, Albiol, Agger, Ramos could/should turn into some of the best.

As far as center backs go, I'd say:

1.Vidic
2.Mexès
3.Rio

Right backs:
1.Sergio Ramos
2.Gary Neville
3.Daniel Alves

Left Backs:
1.Evra
2.Lahm
3.Bale

Overall:
1.Ramos
2.Vidic
3.Mexès
4.Rio.
5.Evra.
