RYAN GIGGS has set the clock ticking on his career by saying he will call it quits as soon as Sir Alex Ferguson phases him out at Manchester United.

Giggs, 35 in November, has already made four appearances this term but has been warned by Ferguson his involvement is likely to be reduced because of his age and the *emergence of Portuguese winger Nani.



Giggs, who broke Bobby Charlton’s all-time club record of 758 appearances in the Champions League final win against Chelsea in May, says he will not hang around if he becomes a fringe player.

Giggs said: “I’m relaxed about my future and I’ve got this year left on my contract. As long as I’m healthy, getting picked and still enjoy it, then I’ll carry on.

“But if any of those things change, I’ll have to consider when I retire and it will be sooner rather than later.”

Giggs, who could start against Bolton at Old Trafford tomorrow, has no intention of walking away from football when he retires, however. He is already making plans to follow *former United team-mates such as Steve Bruce, Roy Keane,
Mark Hughes and Paul Ince into *management.

Giggs said: “Working under the manager here is the best schooling there is. Coaching would be an option and I just need to make sure I have all the qualifications.”

i don't think Giggsy will retire this season thats what i feel
and i don't think Fergie would allow Giggsy to retire if Fergie still needs him
plus all that is paper talk nothing official and we are not if thats true

Next season perhap he will retired after winning the 18th Title. Giggs need to win one more title with us then he may. lol

Whatever his decision is..i am content and well prepared to lose one of our living legend..I rather we keep him on the bench and used him whenever we need his experience but most likely that is not what he fancy doing..Already a great servant to the club and the day he call it quits, i will respect that decision no matter how difficult it is for me.

I would like to see him as the assistant for fergy next season.

I heard he is meant to be a tough coach. While he was taking some youth players and coaching them, during the match and half time, he was supposed to be really tough on the youth and giving them a very impressive but professional talking too

Ryan Giggs will be used as a deep-lying striker or a central midfielder this season as Sir Alex Ferguson tries to best utilise the Welshman’s energies.

The sight of United’s no.11 tearing up and down the flanks at Old Trafford will, but for very few occasions, now be confined to memory.

The 34-year-old played a more central role for the Reds in the 3-1 win over Middlesbrough on Tuesday, and fans can get used to seeing Giggs perform there far more regularly this term.

“He’s been fantastic, absolutely brilliant this season,” says Sir Alex. “But what we have to do is manage him. He is looking absolutely brilliant now, but we also want to have him nice and fresh at the end of the season. He can decide games for you, that’s the great quality he has.

“I see his role as a central player, where we played him the other night,” added the boss. “The days of trampling up and down that touchline for Ryan, at 35 years of age, are gone. You can maybe do it occasionally, but I think that is beyond him now.”

Managing the players within his ample squad is arguably the toughest task facing Sir Alex this season. The sheer volume of talent at his fingertips makes the selection process potentially more testing than it has ever been for the Scot. But Sir Alex insists he is content happy to disappoint players every now and again for the sake of the team, and also the players.

if he does retire, i am excited by the prospect of him working alongside solskjaer at united. how exciting would it be!! having 2 absolute true legends, true reds coaching our youngsters!! but, i still hope he can stay healthy and fit, and play beyond this season.
