Robson: Giggs is Gunnar be a coach

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/sto...262149,00.html

Bryan Robson has backed Ryan Giggs to follow Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's lead and take on a coaching role once his playing days are over.

Giggs has spent 18 years at Manchester United but his current contract is due to expire at the end of the season and there have been suggestions that Sir Alex Ferguson will offer the veteran winger a one-year extension in the new year.

Ferguson has used Giggs sparingly this season and admitted recently that the 34-year-old's days of tearing up and down the wing for United are over and that he would be used in a more central role from now on.

Solskjaer, one year Giggs' senior, took up his role as reserve team coach this summer after calling time on his 12-year playing career due to a knee injury.

Now Robson, who spent 13 years at the Barclays Premier League champions, believes Giggs would be ideally suited to a coaching role at the club when the Welshman decides to hang up his boots.

Robson said: "It wouldn't surprise me if he was offered a coaching job there.

"He's done a couple of training badges and Sir Alex is encouraging that sort of system at the moment at United.

"Ryan is a determined character so it wouldn't surprise me if they did offer him a role somewhere along the line as coach.

"He's definitely got the personal qualities to do the job and he's Manchester United through and through.

"With his record at United and the way he grew up with the club, he'll have no problems with doing that job."

Robson added: "Ryan deserves a new contract the way he has started this season. He's only played a few games but when he has played he's been really sharp and bright about his game.

"When I have been in to see them at training he's been looking really good so it doesn't really surprise me that United are talking about offering him a new deal."

After failing to score in his first four matches, £30million striker Dimitar Berbatov opened his account for the United in their 3-0 Champions League away win against Danish side Aalborg and Robson is a keen admirer of the Bulgaria international.

"He's taken a little bit of time to settle in but you can see the qualities and class he's got and that'll come on the more he gets to know his team-mates and the longer he stays at United," he said.

"He'll enjoy being with the players and enjoy the challenge.

"I don't know what went on with him at Spurs. All I know is that Berbatov just wanted to be a United player. No matter what character of player Sir Alex has got he always get the best out of them and I'm sure he will with Berbatov."

Robson was speaking ahead of an England v Republic of Ireland legends match in which he will take part tomorrow.

The game will take place at Fulham's Craven Cottage ground and tickets are still available.

I would love to see this, he would be a great figure for the younger lads to look up to. He has won Nearly every medle under the sun and is a really nice honest guy, He would make a very good coach someday, well soon actually!!!!

Agreed!

The guy knows the club inside out and is the most decorated British footballer in history. You must be able to learn from him.

Having said that not all great players, make good coaches or managers, but Fergie has mad good comments that Giggsy would make a good coach, so I assume he can and will be.

Ppl tend to judge Giggsy on his style and form now, but until the early part of this decade he was still a wizzard on the wing. If he can transfer his knowledge to up and coming players, it will be a big boost to the club.

Well, already now players listen to his advice and look up to him as an example..what better examples are there to follow other than him?

Even thou it will be a bit weird seeing him as a coach but i have no doubt he will do good. Knowledge is not an issue to him as by now im convince he knows the game inside out. What more, he spends the longest time alongside Sir Alex to have catched up on some of his managing method.

Seeing how he along with Ole and Neville have taken their coaching badges, its not a surprise if he become one. But i'll be very surprise if Scholesy become one tbh..

Sir Alex has always said that he expects Giggs to make a good coach.

If there is an available coaching position here, with the academy or the reserves, then I think we should offer it too him.

As much as we all love Giggs, hes not getting any younger, his level of performance has dipped over the last year and this should be his last year playing for us.

I think that we should offer him a coaching position instead of a new contract.

I think Giggsy would make a decent coach but personally I think Gary Neville could become a great coach. He just looks tailor made to be a united coach in the future.
