This is how it feels to be Chelsea,
This is how it feels to be small,
When you think you've won the double,
And you end up winning **** all.

Just as appropriate if you want a simple reworked song to throw at them.

I think the design of the stadium does play a big role in the lack of atmosphere ... the fact that the South Stand is so much lower than everything else provides an easy escape route for the sound. I think smaller stadiums where every side is the same height are the best for atmosphere, or even better, a stadium with a roof like Arena Aufshalke or the Saporro Dome.

Mind you, we could help the atmosphere a little bit by being loooooooud!

    Lot of reasons imo
    • Our stadium is huge and not good for carrying sound around it.
    • We have such a huge fan base that a huge amount of fans, including myself don't know the words to all the songs.
    • Way too many day trippers that don't know any songs.
    • Loads of people who just don't want to join in, regardless.
    • The stadium never sings as one due to the stands sound being delayed somewhat.

And being honest, I sing a fair bit but not always, however the most of the times I don't its because I'm knackered, its a mid week and I have been up since 4am and need to be up at 4am again lol.

It really is one down point of Old Trafford, its always a little upsetting that East Stand can get sometimes drowned out by away fans.

I dunno but I think it has to do with the amount of prawn sandwiches there. I mean I could hear 3000 Stoke fans singing "five nil and you still don't sing" that's kind of sad to me.

I think another reason that I've found is that there's a lot of people who want to get up and start singing along, but are too embarrased to actually get up and start the song off themselves. I've been sitting there sometimes waiting for someone to start up a song I know so I can join in, and I sort of got the impression that everyone else around me was doing the same because as soon as I said **** it and just started singing anyway, everyone else joined in!

yeah, it's alright but then again sometimes they will make me seem younger. it's best when it's just 3 or 4 of us.

no, i just said " yeah, but i'm not on redissue" and he went "yeah, course you aren't "

i had a look around it recently, the public forum wasn't up to much, but there was some hilarious thread i read about a kid getting bullied on the way to college.

the number one reason is due to all success ,we need a really exciting game to get everyone going .

too many games are seen as meaningless.

seating has a lot to do with it ---- away games and we all stand safe in knowledge steward is not going to come into group of thousand plus fans to eject you ------ at o/t fans are given grief for standing and know they can be penalised from going again as they have all seat buyer details .

i dont get to many games any more and would be classed as a day-tripper but i know and sing the songs when i do go so i dont think its too much of that --- also any chant can be learnt in a few goes .

one other thing which you may laugh at is that when you go away you feel like an invading army and you feel like you are representing your team more -- plus you usually have more excitement down to boozing in the badlands

haggs, i have to say i totally agree with you. especially at united, there is a massive buzz about being one of 3,000 out following your team. at home, you are one of 76,000, but at an away you definitely feel a bit more like a chosen one

it's hard to know what to attribute it to.

lot's of very valid points, especially the one about the noise escaping as our ground isn't even the whole way around, which i must say i never thought of.

the main problem is that we are the biggest club in the world. with that success brings an aura, which businesspeople feel is unique. they bring clients to watch the game and take in the atmosphere.
similarly, lots of people from afar are in awe of this temple that is old trafford. so they sit there, trying to get as many photos to savour the special day. they often take the tour, buy merchandise, and all of this is part of the cycle that keeps us near the top of the tree in world football.

there are a great many who have been regulars from decades ago. there was once a time where they, just as we do now, loved to follow united home and away, knew every song, and probably frowned on the oldies just as we do to them. i have spoken to both my grandfathers, who reminisce on those times, missing school to go to fa cup 3rd and 4th replays before extra time or floodlights were invented. one is still a regular, the other unfortunately isn't. they have as much right, if not more, than we do to be there, but many just don't have the energy to sing or to stand all game, or even to keep in touch with chants.

what was said above about people wanting to sing or stand, but fearing that they will be alone is true. i get that a lot in the south stand, and when you are told to sit down/shut up, it doesn't help your resolve to keep trying to get something going.

the stretford end is known as the place to be for atmosphere. so people flock there. they are rarely quiet, but the noise doesn't travel around, so songs don't catch on. it means that the away fans think we don't sing, the est stand do their own thing, and the cycle goes on because people still flock to the stret, thinking that's the only noise, instead of sitting all around the ground.

at the end of the day, it's hard to see clear solutions. barca last year was a night i will never forget, and people seemed to find their voices then, and we were a cauldron of noise. we are capable of it. but people don't seem to feel the need to urge us on on a cold monday night against middlesborough. i wish they did!

i don't know where i'm going with this post, but i got into a bit of a rant, and its a bit long, but i don't want to delete all of it now

"your only here to see united"

ermm, well, im sorry to dissapoint you, but that wasnt a particularly great turn out! we normally get over the 30, 124 we got last night. against doncaster and nottingham forest, we were sold out , with 33, 010.

somebody on a man u forum even said it was good for us to have so many fans for that game. what a joke!
Please don't sing too loudly at Old Trafford.
