I would say the majority of United fans in the world started following the team in the 20th century. Except for those under 10 years of age of course, they started following us in the 21st century.

In 1991 United became a PLC. This generated funds but also meant that we were beholden to a City board of directors and had to pay them dividends each each year. The vast spending power that was predicted never really appeared until Peter Kenyon became Chief Exec - Martin Edwards, according to Fergie (and Jim White in the excellent Manchester United: The Biography) always held the purse strings pretty tightly. Having said that, we broke the British transfer record twice in the 90s - Keane in 93 and Cole in 95. In 98, having ended the season empty handed to the gooners, we splashed out a fortune (at the time) on Stam (10.75M) Blomqvist (4.5M) and Yorke (12.6M). This worked well as we had a rather successful year.
But to sum up, most United fans spent a large part of the 90s secretly wishing we had a. more transfer money and b. Alan Shearer.
Still, it didn't work out too badly now did it?!

What is happening now with clubs nearly happened with United and Sky in the 90's. Until the deal went to the monopolies and mergers, it was looking to be a done deal. The main reasons United seemed to always be at the forefront of the financial side of the game was down to a number of factors
- We had an aggressive expansion policy to the Stadium thus increasing it from 38-40k to 58-60k during the 90's. Estimates were about that gates were taking in 1million per game.
- We were always breaking the transfer records with players such as Pallister, Ince, Keane, Cole. But also shrewd deals from Fergie amazing eye for a player meant legends such as Irwin, Schmeichel and Cantona meant money could redistributed across the other parts of the team. Excellent youth team in giggs, nevilles, butt, scholes, beckham etc also meant money was saved
- Forefront of any new movements in football. We were the first club to have its own TV channel, long time before any of the others. this was also planned to tie in with the sky deal but never came to fruition. Other factors like overseas tours and targeting foreign markets meant gaining revenue from untouched markets
Overall, we just built on work carried out by creating the United brand name from previous teams such as Busby babes, best years and the robson 80's.
