Was veron one of the biggest ever flops
I personIly get fed up with veron being voted as one of the biggest transfer flops ever . I personally do not think veron was a flop , i watched him play nearly every game for united and i thought he played well in most of them.
His passing in some games was sublime the man oozed class , but as per usual in this country we only like players who run around like headless chickens.
He was also unfortunate that united went through a transitional stage during his stay and also fergie experimented with the lone striker , which did not help.
All in all i was gutted when he left and indeed on the preseason tour that season he was outstanding.
I remember leaving old trafford some games and thinking god that performance by veron was worth the entrance money.
Does anyone else feel bad when people take the piss out of him , i know i do and i have to say sometimes the pace of the game caught him out but by and large he was magnificient

Certainly not. He was brilliant at times and he didn't perform well because his mother died, I think, and he never really recovered. Now he's back at his home club, where his father played, and is doing wonders.

Wasn't he injured for a good while too? He had some great games for us and I remember Fergie ranting at the press about him

But like i said in my first post that preseason tour before he left he was sublime . yet fergie sold him ?.
He always figures in the top ten flop transfers , did these people ever see him play ,also people on this forum have said "well we dont want another veron"

Veron was terribly unlucky , he just never seemed to fully adapt.
he was sensational at times , i just feel the pace of the game in england never suited him , the price tag was also a factor in people saying he was a flop , at the time it was seen as an outrageous sum , nowadays its the norm.
at that time if he had signed for Barca or Madrid people would be saying he was one of the worlds best.

He is a genius. Just never fitted in with English football - happens often with South Americans.
Played some great games, but just played in a team with Scholes (and Beckham) in his prime.

The only reason people see him as a flop is because of his price. On the pitch he wasn't, as he had some fantastic games for us but people just automatically think of the price. There were a number of issues why he didn't perform as consistently as we would have like, but he was certainly no flop..
It would have been interesting to see him get that one more season as he looked good that pre-season, as you said.

Problem was he had difficulty adapting to the English game. He was a brilliant footballer but we already had a class midfield in '01 of Beckham-Keane-Scholes-Giggs, and Veron found it very difficult to break into that established midfield as well as playing in the high-paced, physical Premier League. He'd have done better in Italy or Spain.
His price tag also always detracted away from whatever he did, because it was a huge amount at the time (the then-transfer record) and everyone expected him to be truly amazing right from the start, but because he had difficulty in adapting, people immediately starting calling him not worth the money etc and his confidence must have dropped and he just couldn't find his place.
The fact remains that he was a class player with a magnificent passing range and first tough, but for the money we paid for him he will always remain a flop because he just couldn't fit into our midfield and he wasn't worth the money at all. He was brought in to improve an already fantastic midfield, and he actually broke it up. Therefore, with hindsight, you have to say he was a mistake.

It just didnt work out for him. He played the game beautifully though for many many years. It was a pity really but Id never call him a flop.

He did alright, just nothing compared to what he did in Italy and nothing
close to what would be expected of a £30mil. player.

You have to remember he was coming from an entirely different league to ours, and was played our of position here. He was used to being a Pirlo-style deep playmaker but we asked him to be a link between midfield and attack - the place on the pitch where the game is the most fast and furious. So it was hard for him and with that price tag people expected greatness instantly.
I think we would have done well to play him in the 4 along side Keane and have Scholes playing off Van Nistelrooy
