Why has Man UTD become so unattractive this summer?
Hi guys, just reading all the usual footy and transfer news on the web, and I am beginning to wonder how we, despite being in the last 2 C/L finals are looking like a mediocre club. Firstly selling Ronaldo, fine £80 million, his dream etc etc .... Then Tevez, going to our rivals??? Ribery saying a defo NO to united, Villa saying no, and Benzema has signed for madrid today?
Out of the top most wanted players in Europe today, we have 1 (vidic) and a maybe another in Rooney.
It cant be the weather as i am sat in 30 degree heat, United win tropheys galore! So why are we not as attractive as the big European teams? and why do we have to settle for (no disrespect) Valencia from.......Wigan !!!!

It hasn't, most of the top players always preferred Barcelona or Madrid, we've just been in direct competition for players with them this year that's all.
Plus we have just lost the world's top player to Real Madrid

just seems madrid has become the fashionable team again. would you want to line up in a team getting paid £100k or more a week and knowing you going into a XI that wil have Ronaldo and Kaka and possibly Ribery in it.
I am holding out hope that these players are not going gel and it will all be a massive clash of egos.

One factor is the city of Manchester, another is the fact that many
continental, African and South American players can identify more with
Real Madrid from a social point of view.

still dont see the big deal
no different from any other summer to me par ronaldo going to madrid.
im still happy, its not like pool chelski arsenal or city for that fact have signed anyone out of this world this summer so far.
theres still players out there and 'in sir alex we trust'.
ronaldo cost 12 mil when we got him and look what he turned into.
its not all about spending millions left right and centre
fergie will sort it like he always does
besides how does anyone know fergie wanted benzema, we didnt even lodge a bid, just reports he wanted him
never came out to the media and declared his interest like mark hughes did today for eto

The funny thing is, people moan about this but at the same time consider winning the league more important than the CL when in reality players in different countries don't give a shit how many leagues you've won. Its all about the CL.

I agree with you Clarky, but we do spend millions, we have spent £70 odd million in the last 2 years on Hargo, anderson, nani, and berba.

besides even if we dont buy no more this summer (not that i think i we shouldn't or wont) its not a big deal, were fking man utd and wev had a great past 2 seasons, should be grateful of what we have even without ronaldo. were still the best team in england and in my serious opinion 2nd best in the world because madrid have proved f*ck all yet.
but we have received 80 million, so we should invest in a few players but not spend most of it on 1 player.
even so, whatever fergie decides to do im not going to argue with guy cause his a slightly better manager than me.....only slightly tho

yes and yes, i agree with everything, but we should as a world famous club be attracting world famous( and perhaps) over priced players!!!!
I trust in fergie 110% but watching all these players go elsewhere is beginning to worry me, and make the £780 I spent on next seasons season ticket seem even more expensive !!!

so thats why you dont read many reports that aint make believe about star signings because its not how fergie likes things. we are a football club - not a circus

Taxes is the main reason, for me. Spain can pay more to their players, appearently. Plus, the 80M sitting at the bank are a sign for clubs to raise their prices, and the loss of ronaldo plus the conflicts with tevez make it seem like United might be going into a transitional period, and spain is where the action is gonna be.

This is a pretty decent thread with some good comments. Here's what I think.
I think we should attract the big name players, but we don't for some reason. If you look back over the last 10-15 years, we have never gone out and signed one of the best players in the world. The only one I can think of is Veron, a world renowned player at the time and I still think that the reason he signed was due to his passport problems in Italy. I think the Ronaldinho transfer saga proves my point, most of the big name players want to play in either Spain or Italy for some reason or other. I think that one of the main factors in this is the weather, as sad as that sounds, also the amount of taxes players pay and another reason is that Manchester as a city isn't as attractive as such cities like Milan, Barcelona and Madrid.
The one thing that we Man U fans can be proud of is that although we don't sign the Zidane's or the KAKA's, when we sign a player we make them become a big name, for example:
Rudd van Nistelrooy, Peter Schmeichel, C.Ronaldo, Keane, Best, Law, Stam, Vidic, Rooney and Kanchelskis to name a few.
It said that the world's biggest sports brand and world most valuable sports club (in any sport) can't attract the best players in the world at that time, but a good blog post I read today was that Since the year 2000 when the Galactico era started and Real Madrid signed Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo and Barcelona signed Ronaldinho and Eto'o, we have won more trophies than both of them.
