    The oldies thread

I decided to make a thread for Van der Sar, Neville, Giggs and Scholes. If Nani and Berbatov have threads well then surely the legends deserve a thread that is focused on them.

Comment on their form, your thoughts on their future etc...

Scholes is currently in fine form, a masterclass display against City which was then followed up with another top class display at the weekend.

Yes, Scholes' Fulham display seems forgotten. He's been playing very well in the last few games.

Form is temporary. Class is permanent. Scholes is the best English player of his generation. The best English play maker.

One of the best play makers period.

Scholes > Gerrard > Lampard. That's not being biased, it's a fact! Scholes has been a wonderful servant to the club, class on the pitch and even classier off the field of play. He has no time for the celebrity lifestyle. His adaptability is unreal, he has played as an advanced midfielder in a 4-4-2, then he played off the front man in a 4-4-1-1, followed by playing as a deep lying playmaker in our current 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 formations. Delighted that he's been back to his best in recent weeks.

Not greater than Gerrard or Lampard currently, but certainly as a player he has been better than over the course of their respective careers.

I'd love to know what the shape of the england team would have been like over the past few years had scholes not retired.

That's what I mean, he was one of the greatest players of all time when he was in his prime. I love watching classic Utd matches on MUTV, they bring back fond memories. He used to control the game while posing a serious goal threat. Those were the days.

It's no coincidence that we've hit top form with Van der Sar in between the sticks, he really is a calming influence on the back four.

Think Neville will call it a day when the end off the season arrives.

It certainly is possible as Rafael, Brown and O'Shea are all ahead of him in the pecking order, and then there's De Laet who is waiting for his chance.

Many, including me, have been saying for a while that Neville should retire in the summer, and it looks like he might be considering he hasn't been given a new contract yet. He is a poor player now to be totally honest, and is always the weak link in our defence when he does play. With Brown, O'Shea, Rafael, Fabio (who's played RB a few times for us) and De Laet we have plenty of options now.

As for the others, I'd only be confident about VDS should he continue. He's still a top class keeper, and he's the best we have atm.

Scholes has been very good in the last 2 games, but before that he has been quite average overall for a year or so. Giggs has played very well for us last season and this so far. I'm not sure about them, because age is catching up with them and I'm unsure how they'd do if they were to continue into next season. I'd prefer them to retire when they were still playing well, without them going on and having a poor season before they finally did. I'm not saying they'd have a bad season, but I'm sitting on the fence as I'm that unsure.
