Right, so the community shield basically means nothing, when I suggested to this forum, the fact that we had won it last season along with the league title and european title, that it technically wasnt a "treble" persay.

So the community shield is basically a 'mickey mouse award' and means nothing, was what most of you had roughly said?

And your trying to say what exactly?

Does it matter if it means nothing? No. I'm going to peterborough in a friendly, which means nothing. Other reds going to Africa, Altrincham, Oxford, Juve (h) - all gmaes which mean nothing. Yet they are going there to see new players, youngsters, and watch and show support to the reds.

If I had a lot of money, I would go to every United game - meaningless or not!

So, I don't get what your trying to say!

As already mentioned in this thread,

even if it's not a major trophy like the 'champ league, prem, fa cup' etc.. any trophy/competition is highly important especially if it means that some of the youngsters can get a first team chance..

The more they get used to winning trophy's and big games the more comfortable they will become in playing in these type of occasions later down the line if they make it into a first team regular.

These youngsters are our future we need to to develop them in the best possible way..

If you are saying that the community shield is pointless then every game is pointless? this game is the last pre-season game before the season starts, it's good for the players to test themselves etc.. against the other side and obviously confidence will be high if the result is a win.

When it's the begining of the season the more games the better to get the match sharpness up, especially with fixtures we have in the first month or two!

Am I correct in thinking, that last season (7/8) was the first season the Charity shield winners went on to win the league?

I'm sure I read that somewhere.

great post H, which has kind of changed my view on it.
Confidence, sharpness...all important in the grand scheme of things.

We won the Charity Shield in August '93 and went on to win the league and FA Cup as well that season (1993/1994). We won both the Charity Shield and League in 1996/97 as well.

Chelsea won it in '05 and also won the league that sesaon.

It's a bit of a strange one because it doesn't happen all that often, but it has happened before.
