A happy camp
'Buoyant' is a fair word to describe the mood among the United coaches, players and staff in Monaco over the last 24 hours or so.
European aways are typically whirlwind affairs for all concerned. Herded on and off the plane, coach to the hotel, press conference, training session, bite to eat, bed - and that's just the first day.
There's something about this trip to Monte Carlo, however, which is a little different. There's a relaxed air around the group. But then, as Sir Alex said yesterday: "There's actually no pressure on either team."
The mood of tranquility couldn't even be shaken by one Russian journalist's apparent mission to confuse Gary Neville ("Gary, have you got any special plan to change t-shirts after the match with Zenit?" "Erm, no." Gary, will you tell Nemanja Vidic to concentrate before the match?" "No").
There is still the customary focus within all the players, no doubt because there's another piece of silverware on offer, but yesterday's relatively kind Champions League draw has added a smiley sheen to proceedings.
Murmurs among those on the trip were in agreement - everyone's happy. "The manager must have made the draw himself," proffered MUTV's Paddy Crerand as we wound towards Stade Louis II for last night's training.
One of the perks of being able to follow United abroad is these little glimpses behind the scenes. Training is invariably a joy to behold, as all the players are freed from the pressures of points and consequences, and are able to just cut loose and express their natural talents. Last night's session was another to savour as the squad were put through their paces.
Highlights included: Wayne Rooney's chip which drew a shout of 'what a goal' from Edwin van der Sar as it sailed over him; A Darron Gibson blockbuster which drew gasps from the tiny crowd; Rodrigo Possebon doing a one-handed press-up during the warm-down which drew laughter from Rio Ferdinand.
But throughout the session, there was a steely air about the players. The Reds are falling a game behind their Premier League rivals to be here in Monaco, but every cloud - not that there are any - has a silver lining, and this particular silver lining also carries the title of being Europe's best.
So guys, bring home the third trophy!!
