| Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson has stated his belief that the
United faithful will see club captain, Gary Neville take to the Old Trafford stage
next season as he is hopeful that the Englishman will be back to full fitness from
an ankle injury sustained toward the back end of the 07/08 season in a home
game against Bolton Wanderers.
Neville was restricted to the one first team appearance in the whole of last
season, coming on as a late substitute in the Champions League against AS
Roma in midfield of all places. When this occurred, stand in skipper Rio Ferdinand
showed his maturity and respect by handing the yellow armband over to the 33
year old. This was also a landmark for Gary as it was his 99th Champions League
appearance, not something that happens too much these days. "I’m hopeful Gary Neville can come back and I’m sure he can. At 33 it’s always
difficult to have been out for a year, of course, but he’s such a determined
character you wouldn’t bet against him coming back,” Ferguson stated.
“If he does, it’s another string to our bow really in terms of experience, which is
important.”
Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand shared captaincy duties in Neville’s absence but
Ferguson admitted if the right back returns the armband will be handed back to
him.
“He is the captain of the club, and that will give him the incentive to return. He
knows when he comes back, he’ll be captain again.”

Neville will have to fight for his place though as stand in right back last season,
Wes Brown put in a solid season and will be giving Sir Alex serious questions.
It is expected that Neville will feature in some part of United's pre-season. |
