SIR Alex Ferguson admitted he has
one eye on next Tuesday's
European clash at Roma ahead of
this weekend's Premier League game
against Aston Villa. With seven games remaining, Ferguson's leaders are five points ahead of Chelsea, six clear of Arsenal and have an impressive goal difference of plus 49.
The Scot has taken great heart from the emphatic victory against Liverpool and called for more of the same in the coming weeks.
He said: "I need to have one eye on Roma when it comes to team selection tomorrow because it is such an important fixture.
"But that must not lessen our thoughts about the match against Villa.
"We must use the performance against Liverpool as a barometer. That game was a great sign for me. The composure in our play was top class.
"The most consistent team will win the league and we have to prove that consistency in the coming weeks."
Meanwhile Ferguson confirmed that he rejected bids from Coventry, Stoke and Nottingham Forest to take goalkeeper Ben Foster on loan before the window closed on Thursday.
The United manager took the step just in case Edwin van der Sar is troubled again with a groin problem, leaving Tomasz Kuszczak as the only other senior goalkeeper.
Ferguson said: "Ben was ready to go on loan until Edwin got a groin injury. The old dog maybe needs a bit more protection.
"While the situation does not suit Ben entirely, in fairness to the lad he understood what I was doing.
"At 24 he has his whole career in front of him and he will do well, I am sure of that."
