national service is compulsory for every 'man' who turns 18 here in singapore.
probably because we're too small a dot.
not very looking forward to it though.

Agree with ManUtd 19 and Forever United in the earlier part of the thread - it is about the parents mainly.

A psychiatrist friend of mine told us that too. From his patients that he counselled, a very glaring fact and the first thing he needs to ascertain is always to find out the family background and the upbringing. In fact, he mused that to find out how a child behaves, just look at his parents.

While environment (outside of family) does affect how a child is brought up too, they are largely in the formative years only. However, these parental effects are sublimal, longer lasting than you thought and actually get more pronounced in later years! For example, he told us that a girl who lacks fatherly love will often end up looking for much older men years later when she grows up. The 'strike rate' is most uncanny. You get the drift.

And thus he told us that we are now probably a pretty good image of our parents at our current age in terms of characteristics, strengths and weaknesses etc. Pretty true for me.

And due to the prevalent single parenthood and broken families, he further expounded it is why social problems these days are more rampant than in the past. Many deviant behaviours and practices can actually be traced back to its roots years ago.

What do shrinks know?

004: if your going to do national service, enjoy it and look upon it as a learning experience. It will stand you in good stead later on. I did 17 years in our Army, loved it.

This friend of mine is no ordinary shrink. He is an Asian but has been practicing in Ireland for some years. [Note: Asian shrink in Ireland and not Irish shrink in Asia, if you know what I am trying to say.]

He has dealt with so many different types and number of patients, including really bizarre ones such as patients who swear they had sex with a spirit etc. (and not just one single case of such only!) His opinions and knowledge are mostly based on these real-life cases and enough number of similar cases to draw certain reasonable conclusions with reasonable accuracy.

What would make someone carry a knife bewilders me!

A mate of mine went to Italy and he brought me back these two
small dagger/knife things in a leather casing. I still have them
and have never "pulled" them on someone.

Knives are for buttering bread and cutting various things around
the home, not for threatening and butchering people!

Answer me this FU, say you were walking down a street at
23:00 some night and you had your knife in your pocket or
in your sock...ok?

A bloke comes up behind you and "starts" on you, threatens
you, demands money etc....

You immediately think, "Heyy, I'll get my knife"....Tell me
exactly what you would then do once the knife was visible to
a lad robbing you?? Stab him? Slit him?

Sheesh.....cop on!

If it comes to actually using it i would use it. Its mainly used for as a sign that i'm not messing about. if the guy attacking me has no knife then in all sense he should realise i'm nothing to mess with and back away, thus letting me walk down the street in peace.

In no way can you call me a coward for protecting my own life and even my girlfriends life. its a disgrace if u think thats true.

My parents always taught me right from wrong,
but it didn't stop me going out and causing trouble
when I was a teenager. People are too quick to
blame the parents these days. Some are to blame,
but also some teenagers just won't listen no matter what.

What I've highlighted there,

explain exactly what you mean by it and what you would actually do?

Don't worry. Read my amended post again. Environmental effects largely influence your formative years but parental effects is more long lasting and will show up in your later years.

So you should come good or are coming good.

Meaning i would cut the mofo ! thats what i mean keano. it might be different in your area, you might not be able to come to terms with people carrying knives. but the way i see it i would fight like a pitbull to protect myself and those i care for around me.

if a knife itself isnt enuf to change his mind then its gonna have to go a step higher. i'm not saying i would stab him to death, i'm not actually saying i would stab anyone, am just saying i would usr it if i HAVE too. till he gets the message...
