    Matty James

Anyone else feel this kid could well be the next Scholes? Probably the player who impressed me the most last year, hopefully he gets a couple of cup games this year...

He's a really excellent all around midielder. His range of passing and composure is excellent. He scores a goal or two, he's strong, and has good decision making. He also has played in defense which shows he is a good defender too.

I tip this guy to appear in the Carling Cup in the coming season

Teenagers Matthew James, Scott Wootton and Oliver Gill all signed professional contracts with United on Wednesday 1 July.

The trio impressed last term in the Reserves and Academy sides, with James, in particular, catching the eye with an impressive goal haul.

The Bacup-born 17-year-old (pictured) scored six times for the U18s in just 14 appearances. He also found the net four times for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s second-string, including three spectacular efforts from distance.

Scott Wootton’s contract comes on the back of his first full season at United. The 17-year-old defender arrived from Liverpool last summer and has been a model of reliability and consistency at the heart of the Academy defence.

Alongside him for much of the season was Oliver Gill. Gill, 18 and a commanding presence on the pitch, can play in the middle or on the left side of defence. His height also makes him a threat at attacking set-pieces.

I think he was playing for the England U-19's against Scotland a couple of weeks ago, and he looks quite good. But that's all I've seen of him, so I'll definitely be looking for him next season.

Oliver Gill also looks to be a good defender. I mention him because of the article ^, and when I was watching a Milk Cup game my bro started going on about how he was only here because of his dad, but he was quiet afterwards because he was so good that game.

I'd like to see him go out on loan at some point next season. He is a tall, rangy midfielder with a ferocious shot and an eye for a pass. The problem for him is the amount of midfielders we have at the club. Give him a chance to shine in the Championship perhaps and then take it from there. He has the potential to be in the United squad in a season or 2.

    We don't have that many.

    At this moment in time we have a lot of midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order;
Giggs, Scholes, Carrick, Hargreaves, Fletcher, Anderson, Gibson, Possebon, Hewson...
I'd call that a lot and he certainly has work cut out if he wants to make it at United.

I have to disagree, hes only 17-18, and is already ahead of Hewson IMO, once he hits 20, if he carries on, he could well be in line to be the next Scholes, much in the same way Drinkwater could rule the right hand side...

Our youngsters are definitely impressing, whilst certain ones are pretty average, i can't help but feel that the two Da Silva's, the two Evans, two Keanes, Matty, Drinkwater and even Petrucci and Rav'el are all fully capable and much better prospects...

Think more nevilles/beckhams/butts/scholes/giggs and less greenings/caspers/thorntons/chadwicks/eagles

The futures bright, the futures RED

    Disagree with what?
All the mids I mentioned (bar Hewson for arguments sake) ARE ahead of him in the pecking order, so unless we sell a few of them he will find it tough to get in the team. Ok, Scholes and Giggs will be gone in the near future but what about HArgo, Carrick, Anderson and co.? James does look like the real deal but he has a lot of work to do to even get close to the team.

I agree with the rest of your points Nox. The future is bright. Its just that the midfield area is stacked, unfortunately for James.

Jazz I think him going out on loan would be an excellent idea and is something I have suggested myself before. I think he could cut it in the Championship certainly and League 1 would even be a good experience for him too. He may well be young but he is a strong guy and would not be fazed by the elder players arounf him.

Exactly and as they say 'if you are good enough you are old enough'
Id like to see him in the Championship or possibly at some Prem team if they get stuck.

    In my mind .....

new Paul Scholes = Magnus Eikrem

new Steve Gerrard = Matt James (minus the scouse accent)
