Man Utd Home Superiority Against Newcastle Expected To Continue

By redmaster on Nov 26, 2011 - Twitter:@manutdtalk

Man Utd turn their attentions back to Premiership action this weekend after the midweek Champions League tie against Benfica and with Man City facing Liverpool on Sunday this could be a good opportunity to close the gap on the current league leaders. It was City who ended Newcastle’s unbeaten start to the season last week with a 3-1 win at Eastlands and Man Utd will be looking for an even more emphatic win over Newcastle this week to make a statement to their rivals City.

Man Utd have dominated this fixture in the past, since 1993 there have been seventeen meetings between Man Utd and Newcastle, all in the Premiership, and Man Utd have won eleven of them and drawn the other six. There have been some good Newcastle sides in that time frame, more recently the United advantage has been even stronger with United winning five out of the last six home matches against Newcastle, the most recent being a 3-0 win early last season.

Man Utd are only four points ahead of Newcastle in the Premiership currently but you wouldn’t know that by looking at the odds for this match, Man Utd are the overwhelming favourites and at the time of writing United can be backed at just 4/11. The fact that United are still odds on (10/11) to win this giving Newcastle a one goal head start just goes to show how well fancied United are. Newcastle are clearly not expected to pull off a major shock by winning this, the bookies go 10/1 on a Newcastle win and although that may seem to underestimate them a little, their chance does look limited. The draw is available at 4/1 and seems Newcastle’s best hope of getting anything from this encounter.

United look to have reacted in the right way to the beating that City handed out at Old Trafford a month ago, three consecutive clean sheets and three consecutive wins in the Premiership have shown that the United defence can still be as solid as ever. Newcastle look quite reliant on goals from their top scorer Demba Ba, who has eight goals from eleven matches for Newcastle, and presuming the United defence will keep him quiet the odds on United keeping a clean sheet look very generous, that bet is 10/11 and the odds can be boosted if you back United to win to nil, that bet looks an even better bet at 6/5.

United have become the kings of the 1-0 win with three wins by that scoreline in their last three league games, don’t forget that no team has conceded fewer goals than Newcastle this season (on average less than a goal a game) so a lot points to a 1-0 win in this match and that outcome is available at 13/2. City were able to put three past Newcastle a week ago though so United should be capable of getting at least two goals, 2-0 can be backed at 11/2 whilst a win by a scoreline of 3-0 would mean United better the result gained by City last week and 3-0 can be backed at 15/2. Since the loss against City the only player who has scored in the league for United is Javier Hernandez so he looks the most likely scorer once again, the Mexican is 7/2 to open the scoring which looks good with only United fancied to score whilst the 5/6 on Hernandez scoring anytime also looks a fair bet.
