Sir Alex Ferguson made it his mission to sign Rooney. After protracted negotiations, Wayne Rooney officially became a Manchester United player just four hours before the transfer deadline for an overall fee of £27 Million.

His United debut couldn't have gone any better. He got himself on the score sheet 3 times to secure a memorable hat trick in a 6-2 Champions League victory over Turkish side Fenerbache.

Rooney was part of a new era at United. Sir Alex was building a new squad and him and Cristiano Ronaldo were the key players to build it around. The team improved year after year, winning the Carling Cup in 2005/2006, before reclaiming their Premier League crown after four years of waiting in 2006/2007. That was the first of three league titles in a row for United, who also managed to lift the Champions League trophy in the 2007/2008 season and reach the final again a year later, only to lose 2-0 in Rome to Barcelona.

Rooney continues to grow as a player and shows maturity beyond his years. His vision is astonishing for one so young, his shot is lethal and his combination of aggression and finesse with the ball makes him one of the finest players in the Premier League. With so much experience behind him already, and with so much potential there for all to see, Rooney looks set to continue playing a starring role for club and country.
