His heroics hadn't gone unnoticed. After making just five senior appearances for Gremio he was signed by FC Porto of Portugal in December 2005. He didn't make his debut until March 2006, but till played his part in helping Porto secure the title.
Pre season preparations saw him put in an impressive performance against Manchester United in the Amsterdam Tournament in Holland. It's believed this is where he first caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson.
His first taste of Champions League football came in the 2006/2007 season against CSKA Moscow. But his season was ended prematurely when he suffered a broken leg in a challenge with Kostas Katsouranis of Benfica.
Shortly after Anderson had recovered, Sir Alex made his move and Anderson was signed for an undisclosed fee, reportedly around £18 million. He joined fellow Portuguese speakers Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Nani at the club.
He enjoyed a fantastic debut season at United. Paul Scholes was injured for a few months and Anderson filled in seamlessly in the centre of midfield, including some dominating performances against Liverpool and Arsenal. United retained their title that year to give Anderson his first taste of silverware in England.
The Champions League final saw two English giants go up against each other, United and Chelsea. With the scores level with just a minute of extra time left, Anderson was brought on so he could take part in the imminent penalty shootout. After John Terry's now famous missed penalty, Anderson stepped up and smashed the ball past Chelsea 'keeper, then blasted it into the net once more, an act Sir Alex Ferguson credits with swinging the momentum back in United's favour. Edwin Van der Sar saved Nicolas Anelka's penalty to secure the European double for Manchester United and cap a memorable first year at Old Trafford for Anderson.
The 2008/2009 was almost as perfect as the previous one. United won the Premier League for a record equalling 18th time and were also in the Champions League final. Anderson started this time, but was on the losing side as Barcelona won the game 2-0 after a poor United performance.
His two years at United have been laden with trophies and Anderson has played his part in every one of them. His all action performances have made him a crowd favourite at Old Trafford, despite the fact that he still hasn't managed to score a goal for the club. His huge potential is there for all to see and with Paul Scholes nearing retirement; the future certainly looks bright with the young Brazilian in United's midfield.
