Sir Alex Ferguson will launch a £100 million summer spending bonanza in a bid to prevent Manchester United being replaced by neighbours City as the dominant force in the Premier League. United could finish the season empty handed for only the fifth time in 23 years following Monday’s derby defeat, which handed the title initiative to City. Even if there is another twist in the race with United taking advantage of a City slip-up, Ferguson knows his squad need strengthening – especially after their failure to come through an easy Champions League group and early exits from the Europa League, FA Cup and Carling Cup. He is lining up bids for Eden Hazard, of Lille, and Tottenham’s Luka Modricto add some stardust and creativity to United’s midfield department. And he is also eyeing Athletic Bilbao’s Fernando Llorente, who scored in both Europa League legs against United, to boost his attack. Two full-backs are also being considered because Rafael Da Silva has proved unreliable and Patrice Evra, now 31, needs competition and cover. Valencia left-back Jordi Alba is on the radar. And there will be departures as well – led by Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen. Anderson and Federico Macheda are also likely to be moved on, while Fabio Da Silva will be loaned out to Benfica for the season. Park Ji-Sung will also be sweating on his future after his reputation as a big-game player took another battering in the derby.
The Daily Star also talks about a spending spree with other names thrown into the ring including Wesley Sneijder and former Red Gerard Pique, who is currently with Barcelona.

To be fair the Daily Express isn't the sort of "tabloid comic" that runs these stories without a good deal of proof. If the money is there as Fergie has always maintained, then surely it will be spent this summer. How much did we spend last summer? £60M or something wasn't it?

    I hope it's true.

We need a shake up, we've needed one for years. I hope we spend this summer too.

I'd like us to buy young and talented players, as good as Llorente is he'll be too pricey for his age. Modric isn't much younger either.

I think I'd like to play a bit more forward thinking, get players like Hazard and Kagawa plus M'Vila to keep the team ticking over.

Probably the best way, but I have to admit I do enjoy the summer speculation.

Me too, its like putting money on the lottery and thinking of the possibilities if you win. Just hope we hit the jackpot this summer rather than a tenner.

I've changed my mind about M'Vila though, as much as I love his busy style I'd rather have Martinez who looks much better on the ball. loving the idea of Hazard and Kagawa too.

M'villa, Dembele, Ben Arfa, and Neymar would make us as good as anyone in the world. 100 million should be more than enough to cover that. Sadly, it won't happen.

With 100 mil we would get more than that...
But still I can't believe in any of that, especially in those speculation which including Sneijder and Modric's name.

Fergie should just fooking fix "the engine room". Many players in other positions are over-utilized to cover for that MF weakness. Some of the players might not be even as bad in other position if the MF becomes top notch. I'll drink myself to hallucinations if Fergie can get me 1 man of steel and 1 man of craft. The rest are bonuses...

Looks like somebody at the Daily Express had fun making that story up. Usually they just throw one or two names in there at a time but that guy just went ahead and freestyled on that shit.

I doubt the Glazers will avail that amount of money, but it would be nice if they do. Fergie will spend £40mil on Modric, and £35 on Hazard and £25 on Pique and Bobs your uncle.

    Sounds like bs.

Sneijder is 28, coming off a poor season, and very unlikely.

Why would we sell Pique to Barca for peanuts, then buy him back at an inflated price, when he's having difficulty getting into the Barca team? Vidic is returning next season, and we have Ferdinand, Evans, Smalling and Jones. Why would we buy a CB at all?

Jordi Alba seems destined for Barcelona. We can't compete with a top Spanish club for a Spanish player.

The other players mentioned are more likely.

I think the money for the transfers is there, but if City offer twice the wages........?
