As a child who was always kicking a football around, my idol was Dennis Law, the picture of that acrobatic scissor kick was typical of him. Add the predatory deadly goalscoring, ( think Ruud van Nistelrooy - but better ) and that just about sums him up.....It was really sad that he was injured for the Benfica champions league final.....dont think we would have needed extra time to win it if he`d played.

What a fantastic forward line we had. Charlton, Best , Law. All 3 having won European footballer of the year awards. I doubt that any other team ever will be able to boast 3 strikers all having that honour at the same time!. Law was a goalscoring machine in the penalty area, Charlton had a blistering shot from 30 yards in, and Georgie Best could dribble past a whole defence, not once but twice before scoring....Add the pace of winger Johnie Aston, David Herd who was a goalscoring machine like Law, ( sadly injury shortened his career ), and young starlet Brian Kidd, and its no wonder that Bobby Charlton once said that United went into every game confident of winning. If they ( the oppositon ) scored 5 past us, we were capable of putting 7 past them....or words to that effect.......

I wish that I could have seen him play during his era. It never works trying to fully appreciate a player retrospectively. No doubt about his place in the history of the club though. Law is one of a number of legends who helped to enrich the history of Manchester United and make it the club it is today.

Shhhhhhhhh !! Don't let the truth destroy one of footballs greatest myths, believed by every City supporter, and also many United supporters to this day. :(

    10. Denis Law sends United down
Denis Law barely celebrated when he scored in the Manchester derby for City against his old club in 1974, but it was not the Scot's goal that doomed United to relegation, as many think. At kick-off on the last Saturday, United, albeit with a game in hand, were three points behind Birmingham City - at the time a win was worth only two points. Birmingham were at home to relegated Norwich and about to win 2-1, so when Law scored five minutes from time he did no more than rub salt in United's wounds.

Thank you Denis for giving me some of the best times of my life supporting United. 74/75 was a great season

It was certainly was mate, his last goal and his last competitive kick of a ball. :(
As soon as he walked off, substituted straight after his goal, there was one hell of a pitch invasion by United fans. Match abandoned. Crazy days indeed. :)

Or if you want a shorter vid:

True story - Dennis Bergkamp was named after Denis Law. They added an extra 'n' in there though because Denis was too similar to Denise.

Great set of pics.....really brings back some memories....Really tragic that very little footage remains from those halcyon days.

I was 13 when I watched the European cup final, and have to admit that I wept tears of joy after the extra time win. Georgie Best`s goal where he dribbled round the keeper, Brian Kidds`s double header and Bobby`s clever clip in. Awesome!

Talking of Georgie Best, can anyone remember that game against Sheffield Wed, ( I think), when Georgie dribbled by about 7 opponents ( no lie ), and then slid it in past the goalie. Totally unbelievable! And the time when he purposely took a boot off and held it in his hand and still dribbled past a defender with ease for the umpteenth time.....or the time when playing for N Ireland against England when he came from behind Gordon Banks as he threw the ball into the air to kick it up field and hooked his foot on the ball and swept round and scored, only for the ref to disallow it and I think book him for ungentlemanly play.....Priceless!
