The squad for England v Italy next week has been announced...

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Man City), Jack Butland (Birmingham), John Ruddy (Norwich)

Defenders: Kyle Walker (Spurs), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Spurs), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Leighton Baines (Everton), Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea)

Midfielders: Jack Rodwell (Everton), Michael Carrick (Man Utd), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Jake Livermore (Spurs), Tom Cleverley (Man Utd), James Milner (Man City), Adam Johnson (Man City), Ashley Young (Man Utd), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

Forwards: Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Spurs)

Carrick, Cleverley and Young are the only United players included in the squad, which means a rest for Wayne Rooney.

As expected, the likes of Terry, A Cole, Johnson and Gerrard have also been rested.

Strange u-turn by Carrick. Rodwell hasn't been relevant for a long time. I wonder just how long we'll continue to pick players who don't get a look in at their clubs (Adam Johnson, Defoe etc.)

Milner and Young can probably count himself lucky after their nightmares at Euro 2012. But we are short on the wings.

If Carrick doesn't start, I riot.

I'm guessing he'll start alongside Lampard. There's not a lot of point in having those 2 in the squad unless he plans to start them.

Hopefully we'll get to see Cleverley make his England debut at some point.

Carrick starting. Our midfield already looks better technically with him and Lampard.

If Utd had a more experienced goalkeeper than DDG I think we would have made a move for Butland. Huge potential.

I've thought it a few times, but Cleverley needs to work on his first touch. His movement with and without the ball is great, but the ball often ends ends up a good foot away from him after he's received a pass.

1-0 De Rossi. Carrick should have done much better.

    Not really.

4-2-3-1. Cleverley in the hole behind Carrol. Young/Johnson on the wings.

Johnson keeps trying 60 yard passes and they keep going wrong. He has great skill but lacks end product. He desperately needs to leave City and get first team football.

Carrick, Cleverley and Lampard look quite good as a trio in midfield.

Young seems a bit more confident, he hasn't done much wrong, but he hasn't done much at all either..

Carroll has been anonymous too and struggled to get involved with any build up play.

Johnson has had some silky moments, it's a shame he's at the club he is.

He is exactly the sort of player England needs, someone with a few tricks and someone who will consistently try and attack and get past the defenders. Big shame that he hasn't even got a loan deal going for him.
