The rumour mills are claiming that Chelsea are lining up Landon Donovan to replace Joe Cole who is supposedly poised to join United on a free transfer. Landon Donovan did well against United and seems a skilful player, but we've seen much more of Joe Cole, who is arguably the most skillful English player at the moment. However, Joe Cole's career has been blighted with niggling injuries and I believe Donovan has had more luck in that aspect. He's only had a handful of games for Bayern and Everton though and I haven't seen him much, so am asking others (especially American members) who have seen him play more often, whether they would prefer United to sign Joe Cole or Landon Donovon?
There's no way in hell Chelsea sign Donovan. Why they'd aim that low is beyond me. Donovan is much more versatile, the guy's been amazing on the wing for Everton, and he's not even a natural winger. I'd rather we sign Donovan, because he'll come on the cheap, wage-wise, and if the MLS and its players can't come to a collective bargaining agreement, I hear he might actually be fee-free. If they don't strike, he'll be at the Galaxy for a year or so, and probably be sold, for about 10mil (pounds). More than likely sold to Everton too. Donovan is a better player, both logistically and probably in terms of footballing ability, as well as physical fitness.
just clarifying: You're think Chelsea should be aiming higher, so when you say you'd prefer us to sign Donovan, you're asking the question from the OP, but you would also prefer us to aim higher, right? I've only seen him on Bundesliga highlights, against us and his goal against Hull on the weekend, so can't form a good opinion, but it's interesting to see you think he's technically better than Joe Cole, who does have a lot of a bility. I thought Donovan showed giid desire against us, as well as pace and ability. Certainly would be ahead of Park and Nani on the left he did join United.
Chelsea has $, and is why they should be aiming for someone like Ribery or whoever else. Donovan's value and ROI for his fee(if there is one) and wages would be sky-high. Both from a performance and marketing perspective. Donovan joins Manchester United, and it's big news here. United are far and away the most recognizable name in "soccer" here. Look at Euro Trip for example, and The Day After Tomorrow. Both are littered with Manchester United references. Donovan has always had the talent, it was always a question of the California boy longing for the beach, and some Barbacoa Chipotle. He's definitely far and away better than Park and Nani.
He's missed a couple of chances here and there, but the guy can finish with both feet, look at his goal against Spain in the Confederations cup, as well as the one against Brazil.
heh heh ...they sing Glory Glory Man United in the pub in Euro Trip and in the day after tomorrow they watched a United match in the weather station. Is Barbacoa Chipotle a hot sauce? Dang.... the marketing geeks at Red Planet will have hard-ons if Fergie were to seriously consider Donovan. He'll probably ask Gary o ask Phil for some isider info and reviews, but Donovan might want to repay Everton for the opportunity to get a good run of games in a European league. I might catch some Everton games to check him out, since Chris Smalling is playing so infrequently for Fulham....
Chipotle is a burrito-chain of restaurants here in the States, Barbacoa is one of the kinds you can get. It's like $3.99 for a burrito the size of a baby cow, and Landon Donovan manages to be an elite athlete despite eating there about 5 times a week. You better hurry, as his loan deal is almost over I think. I highly doubt he'd go to any English side that isn't Everton, as he'd get to hang out with Tim Howard, and the Evertonians have taken a shining to him.
hmm yeah those were pretty goals but i don't think his finishing is a finishing of a striker, but it won't matter if we play him on the wing were he would do a better job than Park
Or his goal this weekend... Would be elated if we signed him as I think he could fit right in with the way he works. Think he would be perfect with Roo as the way he tracks across the field as well. Ability wise, Cole is probably better, but I don't trust his health... And by the way Abo, if you are going to argue that Donovan can't finish, remember, we have Park as an option who couldn't score with a bag full of bananas in a monkey whore-house.
Cole's probably a better crosser, but that's about it for me. Donovan takes a mean corner too, which would help out a lot considering we suck at them.
Alot of that is due to who we have had in the box as well. Both Vidic and Rio haven't been in there to win headers. If I were an opposing defender I would gladly give away corners at all cost against us.
Cole's a pretty good finisher too, but given the choice I'd take Donovan in a heartbeat as well - he just seems like the right kind of player for United. But something tells me he'll stay at everton for a season or two.
I have never really saw Donavan before this loan move but why the **** is such a quality player like him wasting away in LA
You know how California is really glamorized? The way it's always made out to be this amazing place, and whatnot. ...it's all true.
