Hearing increasing reports that Chelsea might be about to release Michael Essien. If true could he be worth a gamble in a Michael Owen type deal?

We could probably get a couple of years out of him and if we could get him anywhere near his best, he'd be a great addition and buy us time to find a young midfielder to take over.

    Worth a punt?

No. He's awful now. A shadow of his former self.

Maybe he could be in charge of Glazernomics?

he's finished. Wouldn't be surprised to see a fairly big team take a punt though

No transfer fee and a pay as you play deal - it's worth a crack as even Essien at 70% is better than what we have.

Pay as you play on a free, probably unless we can afford someone better.

he won't take pay as you play when other big teams will offer him a normal deal

Should've come when he had the chance....

I wouldn't be upset if it happens, although it would mean we probably missed out on someone...

No thanks, no washed up chelsea players at our club, he's injury prone and has too many miles on the clock now, another player whose game is based on work rate, like Park he's coming to the end now and he's definately not better than what we have, he hardly plays a game now, if he was so good he would be straight in the chelsea team, 5 years ago definately worth having but not at nearly 30.

i cant actually believe how far he has fallen. IMO he was in the top 3 players in the world in his first 2-3yrs at chelsea. he was a monster. I wouldnt take him. its embarrasing enough that we had to bring scholes out of retirement(altho he was excellent) and to go out and get a player way past his best would be awful. what would this say for our future aspirations

I would have loved us to have signed him when he joined Chelsea but I think he's a spent force now. Too injury prone and hasn't managed to prove that he can still perform at a high level. I'd say it was a waste of time. You could fill your squad with all kinds of 'free' signings that could fofer you something. But most aren't likely to offer much at all, hence the reason their current clubs are letting them go. Every now and then you get one who manage to turn things around and reestablish themselves as a top player. But they are few and far between.

His time is gone....when he was in his pomp he was the best, most complete midfieder on Earth, better than YaYa is now for example. But the injuries have taken their toll.

Not now. I think injuries have really taken their toll on him, and he looks a shadow of the player he once was.

Not a sadder sight in football this season than watching Essien play football. Guy is done.

The one thing I would say it that he seems like the type of guy who would go to another big club with the full intention of proving that he is still capable of playing at a very high level. It might be worth a punt - but only after we've done all the business we need to do this summer. We certainly could not count on him.

I agree with most of the posts here though, he does look done as a top player.

One advantage is, that he is just 29 and still has, if he is determined, 3 years at top. Could be worth a try, but I wouldn't risk it. We've had enough with Hargreaves already. Don't need another 2.
