Interesting line in The Guardian with regards Michael Owen. They reckon Manchester United are monitoring his situation carefully as they believe they could land the free agent on wages worth a piffling £40,000-a-week. With Karim Benzema off to Real Madrid and a lack of genuine alternatives, could Sir Alex turn to a player he was known to be keen on earlier in his career?

Just on the Sky sports transfer watch.

What you think of that? I personally think worth a shot because he is on a free transfer. Only problem is injury prone...

The only reason somebody will sign him up is to train up fellow strikers, he wont play for them, not often anyway, so its a very expensive coach. Not worth it at all imo. i would be angry if it happened in fact.

    its too tough to call.

A fit Owen will score goals at United.
An unfit Owen will be pointless.

    really not sure.....
as long as he doesnt want a signing fee, then maybe??
MASSIVE gamble though - even at ''just'' £40k a week

I'd happily take a punt on Owen. A natural goalscorer and a good foil for Rooney.

if he was to accept a pay as you play deal like Saha did at Everton then id be all for it.

he is still only 28 and would even offer a great deal to our young strikers.

A free transfer or not, if we sign him we can kiss the Premiership goodbye.

I disagree, even if fit, he has lost about 4 yards of pace and Owen has never been the most technically gifted player. Michael Owen is finished, I think it proves it when his only concrete option is Hull City, even Sam Allardyce won't take a gamble on him.

We have over £100m funds in the bank apparently and some fans are talking about free transfers, I am really not looking forward to this coming season.

He can be a striker we sign, but not the striker.

What I mean by that is, he can do the role Henrik Larsson did a couple of years ago and make a few appearances when need be, but he is simply not going to be a regular starter and it would only be a short-term acquisition.

I can't see Fergie going for him anyway. We need to go forward, and his reputation that has developed in recent years comes before him.

One thing about owen is, despite all his injuries problem, he still had a good goalscoring record at newcastle in terms of goals per minutes.

anyway, IMO owen is getting injured so much is down to the fact that newcastle rush him back almost every single time. not giving him time to build his fitness back up to 100% is a very big difference.

100% fitness is a huge difference, but that doesn't change the fact that he has lost most of his pace and he has changed his game some what to accommodate that, now you see him dropping of and coming deep for the ball, that's fine but the trouble is that his technique is shit, he has none basically. When Michael Owen was at his best he had pace to burn and loved the ball over the top, for him to run onto. One thing I will praise Owen with is, that he is a very good finisher but without his pace he won't get into double figures and for that reason I don't want him.

Errrr... Where did I say that they want him?

Even if we do have £100m in transfer funds we wont spend it all. Some of it will go to paying off the debt.
