Dempsey is a second striker, which we already have in Rooney. He's not going to start ahead of him and he wouldn't be worth spending money on. He's a very good player and having a terrific season, but not the answer to our problems.

Dempsey is a very good player indeed. Probably the best U.S player I've seen since. But he isn't what we need. We need very good to world class players if anyone is going to get signed. It's either

    (1) Eden Hazard
    (2) Shinji Kagawa
    (3) Javi Martinez
    (4) Cheik Tiote
    (5) Yann M'Villa
    (6) Christian Eriksen

Out of all of those, Tiote and Kagawa look the most realistic to be snapped by us. Hazard would be immense if we could get him but I see him going to Madrid soon probably to replace Kaka. Eriksen might head to Barca seeing as he said he prefers La Liga over EPL.

The Dempseys of this world aren't going to take us anywhere.

we need to look at this on two levels, we need the Hazards or Neymars, this is true, but if we cant get them for whatever reason, we need to be realistic, who is out there who we CAN GET that will actually improve the squad?

I've said before, it doesn't matter if the player is necessarily a "name" or even if they're world class (which Teddy was in any case) I care about whether or not a player will fit in with the team and do the job we need them to do.

Michael Carrick has been playing well as a screening defensive midfielder so what I want to see is someone who can be given the ball and then make killer passes, or even surge forward themselves to score. If it's Goetze, Hazard, Kagawa or Kaka then I'll be overjoyed - if it isn't, but the lad does a job - then I'm more than happy.

You can pay over the odds for "world class" players who don't for some reason work for United (look at Seba Veron) but at the same time you can find someone who isn't a superstar - who fits into the United team and makes an excellent contribution (such as Ronny Johnsen, Dwight Yorke etc)

Exactly, those wanting World XI class players are still tuned into Football Manager too much, its not United's way, Hazard will be £35m+, i'm not denying hes one of the top talents in the world, but Fergie won't throw that sort of money on a gamble...

There are much cheaper, more suited options available even in Ligue 1, Valbuena, Martin, M'Vila, Ayew etc...

As for Neymar/Lucas Moura, £60m+ EACH means these players shouldn't even be discussed in the first place...

Decent little defensive midfielder (tiote, strootman, martinez might be too pricey also) and a few young squad players (clyne, moses or zaha etc) and we're good to go, make sure Pogba is tied down and give Scholesy another year (clearly hasn't lost 'it')

Of all the names mentioned in dispatches, I think the kid Kevin Strootman and Nathaniel Clyne are probably the most likely to arrive.

Oh please, do me a favour. It would be nice if we got one of those players but there are some shrewd signings to be made. Dempsey just isn't a shrewd signing we should make to improve our team .

I don't want a potential big thing...I want a Messi or Ronaldo type of player....Maybe Gotze or Hazard will do.

Who said Dempsey would be the only signing we make though? Your acting like he would be the only recruit to try topple Barca (which won't happen anyway)

The thing is Madrid and Barca are stuffed with midfielders, so i don't see them going for them unless they are bound to them. The next sensible destination for the players would be the EPL big boys, but Chelsea are going to loose out on CL, Arsenal won't have the money to pay them, Spurs are going to have a new manager who won't splash the cash, and City will face a managerial clearout. So I would think we have high chances for whoever we bid seriously.

What does Barca have to do with this? I just don't think Dempsey would improve our team. It really is that simple.

You don't think a player who has scored more this season than all but 1 of our players, has the skill required to improve a squad that looks likely to lose at least one of owen/berbatov anyway?

    1 He's 29.
2 He's only scoring this amount of goals because he plays behind the striker. Which means he's playing in Rooney current position. Rooney plays the majority of the games when he's fit, so being his deputy generally means you aren't going to play much. Ask Berba if you don't believe me.
3 his passing wouldn't add anything to our team since it's nothing special.

He would still add to the squad, as a 3rd/4th choice striker or backup winger

What ever player/s are United transfer targets is anyones business.

This summer we will be linked with every man and his dog, there will be marquee players signing next week, players giving come and get me plee's, people going crazy on twitter stating to be 'in the know' saying we're signing so and so, certain journalists from certain news papers saying one thing opposite to a rival newspaper saying another thing in an 'exclusive'. We'll be linked with the best but there will also be players names pulled out from obscurity with claims of one of Fergie's under the radar signings.

But i'm getting ready for this already, i'm going to ignore everything on twitter, ignore every newspaper ignore sky sports news, ignore this section of this wonderful forum and not believe a thing until i see a photo on the official of a player sitting next to Fergie and David Gill signing a contract and then posing with a United shirt and holding a scarf above his head surrounded by photographers. Then i will believe its happening.
