I know you're a technical music supremacist that rags on Nirvana, but why not give In Utero a spin in memory of the great man? Then maybe Dirt or Alice in Chains s/t for Layne.
I find it's fairly underrated to be honest. You'd be forgiven for thinking Nirvana only have one album (or song for that matter). They truly crafted something unique on that album.
In Utero is an amazing album. I have no problem with people genuinely disagreeing with that but I notice there's a lot of contrarians about these days who deliberately choose not to like an album/band because it's something of a sacred cow. It's a bullshit, pretentious and smug attitude that I can't stand. For some reason Nirvana get the brunt of it in recent times. I'm not saying that's Abo, just a general comment on an attitude I see more and more of these days. I have to say Foo Fighters are absolute muck too. Two good albums- the first and second and even then TCATS could do with losing 3 or 4 songs.
Agreed. I have a lot of friends who are apparently into "indie" music and most of them don't like Nirvana because they "don't like their sound". One's favourite band is the Foo Fighters and even he doesn't like Nirvana ffs. I actually have a lot of time for Foo Fighters. Sure they had a few average albums but Grohl can always come up with a monster song. I think their first 3 albums are classic.
I don't much care for Nirvana but I love Pearl Jam. Not related, it wasn't ever because Nirvana hit it big (although it worked out better for Pearl Jam in the end) and Pearl Jam didn't become as mainstream. I just don't like the sound of Nirvana. Different strokes... Side note, I do like most Foo Fighters, but they aren't a band I rave about. Foo Fighters are also more likeable as Grohl is generally hilarious and doesn't take himself serious.
I've never really been able to get too into Pearl Jam aside from a few songs. I do think they are a good band, though. I agree with you about the Foo Fighters. There's no way in hell I'd ever say they were one of the best bands out there in terms of the quality of their musical output.
