For the day that's in it, songs about weed: This is more about acid, but the sentence repeated about 50 times at the end is perfect for today (Everybody smoke pot):
There's no better experience than being blazed while laying under the stars, listening to notorious xx.
Chino Moreno and 3 of the guys from ISIS have formed a band called Palms. I'm going to call it right now before a note has been heard- this will be AMAZING. Should be an album out later in the year on Ipecac.
Spin is a joke. Kurt Cobain the 4th greatest guitarist of all the time? Better than all these guys: Kerry King Freddie King Albert King B.B King Jonny Greenwood Ed O'Brein Jimi Hendrix Tom Morello Johnny Marr Jerry Cantrell David Pajo David Gilmour Robert Fripp Buckethead Steven Wilson Keith Richards Jimmy Page Brian May Matthew Bellamy Aaron Turner Michael Gallagher Robert Johnson John Squire Jónsi Jeff Hanneman Dave Mustaine Neil Young Eric Johnson Larry LaLonde J Mascis Kirk Hammett Slash John Petrucci Adam Jones Steve Vai Yngwie Malmsteen Mark Morton Wes Montgomery Frank Zappa Steve Howe Pat Martino Eric Clapton Robby Krieger Steve Hackett Anthony Phillips Joe Satriani Note, I made this list in less than 5 minutes and I might have left loads of other guitar gods who are miles ahead of Cobain. Edit: I only mentioned around 40 guitarists, I should be ashamed of myself, because I should at least name another 100.
If Kurt Cobain was a footballer, and his guitar talent made into footballing ability, he'd be a poor mans David Nugent. Kurt is possibly one of the top 10 songwriters of all the time, one of the best 100 hundred vocalists of all the time (male and female) but he's not a talented guitars, never was, never been.
I also get annoyed by Cobain being so high in these lists. I think he was a good guitarists, but his parts usually were pretty simple to complement his songs. I really don't see why people rate him so highly, nostalgia etc. aside. Corgan was/is a hundred times better player than Cobain. Same with J Mascis, Jerry Cantrell, the guys from Pearl Jam, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and a whole heap of Kurt's contemporaries. EDIT: just saw that they included Skrillex in their list. That truly is a disgrace.
Spin had Moornaldo as their #1 this is why I didn't include them in my list. Yeah McCready and Gossard are also better than Kurt, not by much, but still they are more advanced guitarists. I also forgot Kim Thayil, Alex Lifeson, Tony Lommi, Dave Murray and Snowy White. Speaking of Snowy, he's extremely underrated. Bah, forgot to add Steve Lukather, now that's a guitar God and a half. Seriously they had Skrillex? The Fack? I only saw the top 10, saw Kurt #4, and closed the link. They rustled my jimmies.
Yep forgot about Thayil. I was just making the point that Cobain wasn't even the best guitarist of his own generation yet he's often ranked among the best of all time. No question that the likes of Iommi and Neil Young are better than Kurt. Good to see Corgan get a mention at 60 odd, even though I'd like to see him higher. He's always left out of these lists.
The disgusting thing that, from the 90's alone, you could name 100 guitarists better than Kurt. I mean, if you put J Mascis head to head with Kurt, it's like a race between Koenigsegg CCXR and a down-syndrome Snail. The difference between Mascis ad Kurt in size, would be the difference of size between VY Canis Majoris and a human cell. Yet every magazine put Kurt at least 20 places ahead of Mascis, except for Spin which had Mascis one place below Cobain. Cobain is the cancer of the music industry. Corgan is a good guitarist, he's no Shields or Squire, but he's good and certainly better than Kurt. I forgot about Nick McCabe, pretty underrated guitarist, but he's got a hell of a technique on him. One of the most technically gifted guitarists of our lifetime.
Shields was pretty innovative but I don't know if he's that great technically. Maybe his music just doesn't give him the chance to show off his technique. Corgan is very underrated IMO. He's played in such a wide range of music, he can create distinct moods with his playing and he can solo with the best of them. Josh Homme is another good guitarist who is often overlooked. Adam Jones too.
The new Silversun Pickups album is being streamed on their youtube site. It's not bad so far, Mean Spirits is definitely a standout for me.
