This is the official Phil Jones thread for the upcoming season, all things Jonsey should go in here...

We signed Phil from Blackburn last season over fierce competition from the likes of Arsenal Chelsea and especially Liverpool for whom offered more money then us for him but he still only wanted to sign for us for a fee believed to be around 16 and a half million pounds. He had a solid first season especially in the first half of the campaign where he was one of our best players and seemed to fit in faultlessly whether he was playing right back center midfield or center half, with many people comparing him to the great Duncan Edwards including Bobby Charlton who played with Duncan himself and said he was the best player he ever played with. High praise indeed.

However his performance levels began to drop towards the second half of the season which I suppose can be expected for a man playing non stop for pretty much 2 years having played a high number of games for Blackburn in his final season (28 starts) then going to the European under 21 championship in that summer with England and then coming pretty much straight into the united side and playing a lot more games then himself or anybody expected he would and playing in 41 games in total scoring 2 goals (more games and goals in one season then he managed with Blackburn in his two full seasons with the first team there).

When you look at Phil it's still to believe he's only 20 years of age (D.O.B 21 /2 /92) because of the size and physicality of him, he has the build of a rugby player and many players ten years his senior would love to be as big as him. He's had his critics about his technique and footballing brain however he has shown glimpses of his class on the ball with a number of assists and surging runs and growing pains are to expected when you go from playing football with Blackburn to Man Utd and I'm sure he will only go on to improve these aspects off his game and go on to be a Manchester United legend in years to come.

The one great thing about signing Phil aswell was that in the same year we signed David De Gea and with Chris Smalling Rafeal and Fabio already here we could potentially have our defense sorted for the next 10 + years if the lads reach there expected potential and stay injury free and loyal. Exiting times to be a United fan indeed.

I hope Fergie picks a position for him and sticks with it. I think he should be a DM and he can fill in at CB and RB when needed. I don't like him much as a RB. He can become a great player but he shouldn't get wasted as a utility player.

I don't like the idea of utility player too - Jack of all trades, master of none.

But every team probably needs one for the grueling long season, although I would have preferred him to be some fringe players like what O'Shea used to do for us. Certainly not one earmarked as a future stalwart for us.

I reckon he'll get a lot of time in midfield next season, especially if we aren't going to make any new signings there. While it may not be as exciting as signing a player like Martinez, Phil definitely has the ability to make an impression there and at only 20, in a year or 2 he could be regarded as good as Martinez is now.

In his 1st season with us he played 41 games, in 3 different positions, that is a learning curve and an education that will stand him in good stead for the rest of his career.

I wouldn't get too concerned with him becoming a utility player like JOS, it was JOS's ability that limited him not his versatility. Some of the greatest players in history started out playing positions that weren't what they were ultimately famous for.

Big season for him with this possibly being Ferdinand's last as 1st choice. All the defenders have a big fight are their hands.

    For Horror films or comedy?

One thing SAF must guard against on Jones is turning him into John O'shea mkII. If he continues along the same path of "doing a job anywhere on the pitch" he will turn into an unfancied journeymen who will be jake of all trades but master of none. He has the attributes of becoming a world class CB and there he should play as understudy to Vida. I have no problem with him being deployed at right back to keep him sharp and aid in his learning process but the issue comes when Fergie prefers him to Rafael and plays him there a lot more as it kills Rafael's chances of growing into that rightback position and becoming world class.
In essence Jones should be given time to iron out his game reading issues at centrehalf.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/ar...id-Roy-Hodgson-Phil-Jones--Martin-Samuel.html

nice read with a mention on how Roy missed a trick by not using Jones to stop Pirlo ..... maybe Roy had slotted him as a back up for RB position and always preferred Henderson .... anyways coming back to Jones, it would be fascinating to see him mould to become our own Javi Martinez and that may hold good for England as well .... with Vidic, Rio, Evans and Smalling already covering for the 2 CB position the only other position that I can see him playing is RB... but would like him to take over from Carrick slowly .....
