There are obvious concerns that Kagawa will be wasted and deployed out of position (anderson, kleberson etc) but as he has stated he fully hopes to be the man "in the hole", could this mean a full shift to use a playmaker/attacking midfielder/trequartista?

We've already seen this in some form with Rooneys play the past few years, mainly to cover for lacklustre midfield play, but do we now face the exciting prospect of seeing Rooney deployed as an out-out striker, some might argue not his best role, but definitely his most potent in terms of goals scored?

Also of note is Ashley Youngs role for England, where he seems far more comfortable than out wide where hes often just a passenger in games...

The 4-4-2 will still be there as a plan B no doubt...

    Simple poll :)

It's possible and the signings might lead us to thinking it but then is Fergie really going to change his system right before he retires, after 25 years at United?

I've gone with no but I'm split about 70/30.

Probably yes. I almost certain that Fergie wants 4-2-3-1, even if not always. But for example last year, in the final day we played in this formation and I think it wasn't a coincidence.

I'm voting yes, mainly in hope atm. I think we should change to a 4-2-3-1 formation, but Fergie likes his 4-4-2 so I'm not completely sure if we will or not. We usually do play this kind of system in Europe and in some of the bigger games so I don't think it's that big a transformation.

As JJ has said, I do think we need a more natural DM. I also think, as I've just posted a few moments ago in another thread, that we should avoid signing another striker as having 4 strikers for a 4-2-3-1 formation doesn't make that much sense to me in the long-term.

We definitely need a change, our style is outdated, kagawa is the type of player to change that hopefully

yes certainly we are going to play the 4-2-3-1 system
... we have the personal for the 3 to play behind the striker in the form of Nani, Valencia, Young, Giggs, Kagawa and Cleverly
--- we have the personal for the single striker role - Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck and (Macheda or Henriquez)
--- but we certainly lack personal for the 2 sitting in front of the defense ...only Carrcik and Scholes are sure starters ... Ando is still an uncertainity, Fletcher is not confirmed, Park has been awful in that and only backup we have is to play Jones there... so badly need another signing for that position in form of Modric, Asamoah or Strootman

No idea. So I havent voted.

What came first - the chicken or the egg?

Do we select a formation and then buy the players that we think would excel at that formation or do we buy top players and then build a formation to get the best out of them?

Everyone acknowledges our lacklustre midfield and the desperate need for reinforcement there. Everyone has an idea of what and who we need. Traditional CM, Attacking CM, goalscoring CM, Defensive CM....and so on.

Personally I think the 442 is pretty outmoded. Nor do I think United have even close to the personal to be good at it. Mostly because the midfield is so poor.

Play Kagawa in a 442? I havent seen him play so I dont really want to make any definitve statment on it but based on the little I have seen, his size & abilities I think we might struggle in a 442 unless we have some real quality alongside him. Did he play in a 442 at Dortmund?

I'd rather see him in a midfield 3, Rooney up top on his own. Then at least we can play a combination of Clev/Carrick/Scholes and not be exposed whilst having a goalscoring and creative threat in midfield.

Anyway it will be extremely interesting to see how we line up at the start of the season. I for one hope our shopping is not yet finished but thats another matter.

I still want someone in midfield who puts the fear of God into the opposition.

I agree to many, I've been his biggest critic the last couple of seasons. The belief would be a) raise his I value for a recoup b) see him reach his god given potential.
If all goes well, which it wont, he wil be out of shape shit head coming into the new season. Dumb ass.
    This really should be it.

I would like to see us change to a 451, if only because its where Rooney plays best. Hopefully Kagawa brings the creativity we've been lacking allowing us to use the formation. I think it would allows us to get the best out of Scholes aswell which is a big bonus.

Kagawa is closer to a forward than an attacking midfielder...
