Booooooom! The wait is almost over, a week until the U-18's are finally back in competitive action, after disappointment in some of the summer competitions, a chance to get back into league action. And first up a tough trip to Stoke City, a side that they have found tough in recent times. Let's hope they can hit the ground running.

    Welcome back U18s!

Who do we have this year?

So the squad is as follows:

    Goalkeepers
    Jonny Sutherland
    Pierluigi Gollini
    Kieran O'Hara
    Joel Castro Pereira

    Defenders
    Liam Grimshaw
    Donald Love
    Ryan McConnell
    Louis Rowley
    Matt Wilkinson
    Declan Dalley
    Nicolas Ioannou
    Ben Barber

    Midfielders / Defenders
    Callum Evans
    Josh Harrop
    James Weir
    Paddy McNair

    Midfielders
    Jack Rudge
    Joe Rothwell
    Sean Goss

    Midfielders / Attackers
    Mats Moeller Daehli
    Andreas Pereira
    Ben Pearson
    Adnan Januzaj

    Forwards
    Jack Barmby
    James Wilson
    Kenji Gorré
    Sam Byrne
    Ash Fletcher
    Matthew Willock
    Devonte Redmond (U16s)

In the pre-season, Jonny Sutherland and Pierluigi Gollini have been alternating as Sam Johnstone's back-up for the U21s because Liam Jacob and Joe Coll were released in the summer. Adnan Januzaj, Mats Daehli and Jack Barmby look the most likely candidates to step up to the U21s regularly as well. Nicolas Ioannou was injured at the Milk Cup, so I'd be very surprised if he'll be fit so soon.

To begin the season, I think Paul McGuinness will likely pick a team from his second year cohort, representing seniority and experience. On paper, and assuming there isn't a Reserves fixture to contend with, the team for the first match could be:

    Subs
    Pierluigi Gollini
    Josh Harrop
    James Weir
    Ben Pearson
    James Wilson

You could then put out a '2nd team' as follows:

Kieran O'Hara / Joel Castro Pereira

    Donald Love
    Ryan McConnell
    Nicolas Ioannou
    Ben Barber

    Paddy McNair / Callum Evans
    Sean Goss
    Andreas Pereira

    Kenji Gorré
    Matthew Willock
    Ash Fletcher / Devonte Redmond

There will be a U21s match with Stoke on the same day.So IMO Daehli,Januzaj,Sutherland will be in that match. My guess about the line-up for U18s:
    Gollini
    Love-Grimshaw-Wilkinson-Rowley
    Pearson-Rothwell
    Barmby-Pereira-Wilson
    Byrne

It does seem like a strange defensive line used today. Surely Dalley and Love would have been starting? Instead both were subs, until Love came on. You could have had .....

    Love - Grimshaw - Dalley - Rowley

McConnell is reportedly a right back, and Paddy McNair is a midfielder. He must have done well filling in for Ioannou in the Milk Cup to again be picked at the back. Even Josh Harrop has played right back before, which could have moved Grimshaw in to the centre.

    Any news of Matt Wilkinson?

We always struggle against Stoke City at this level. They're built like men compared to most of our lads.

I wish that we'd start playing players in their more natural position.

Daehli shouldn't be anywhere near this team until The FA Youth Cup games start.

Pereira needs regular games to get up to speed.

Did Ryan Shields play for Stoke today? I think when United released him, he went to Stoke.

Consider Gorre, Fletcher injured, Barmby trained with the first team then we don't have much choice.Losing devastately on the first match probably will destroy young players's confidence, so must field in a decent team. And U21 team still doesn't have enough spot until some of them go on loan.
