Jesse Lingard is a small and quick "striker" who so far this season has largely been used as a substitute towards the end of Academy matches. He can also play out wide, and may be better suited to the wing where he can take on a full-back, rather than battle with a centre back who is twice his size!

Haha, he's a top lad! Bit cheeky :) He's class in training, and considering his height, he's really got talent and I can see bags of potential in him!

The fact that the last post in this thread was nearly 3 years ago, shows you just how under the radar he has been to most United fans.

Not many of our members watch The Reserves and Academy regularly anyway, but other players in the same age group as him have received plenty of attention on this forum i.e. Morrison, Pogba, Tunnicliffe, Fryers and the Keane twins.

3 years ago, Lingard was a tiny stump of a player who was used as a squad player for The U18s. He was weak, indecisive and struggled to score goals. He could barely get a game. At the same time, the players mentioned above were grabbing all of the headlines and attention. I for one didn't think Lingard would progress to the standard that we saw in last night's friendly, in which he was arguably our best player.

Fast forward to two years later from his first season with The U18s, and he had become a key player for The Reserves. Last season he came into his own and was probably the most consistent player in The Reserves. If he wasn't scoring goals, he was creating them.

It's amazing what a good attitude and hard work can do for a player. He has worked his socks off to get to this point. He's worked on all aspects of his game and has bulked up in the gym. He's now one of the best prospects at the club. Out of all the players he came through with, little Jesse Lingard might just be the one who actually makes it big at the club.

It shows how you can't truly judge a young player until he has matured, which is at 19/20. We could have a real player on our hands. He seems like a loyal and honest lad as well. Here's to him improving even further.

He surely was my man of the match last night (though SAF kept the plaudits to Berba)..... he excited like no one else on the pitch last night and I was always waiting for the ball to go to him .... playing alongside the genius Scholes helped him and he surely wants more of it ... hope he gets his first team games more often ...

    Lingard's debut delight

Jesse Lingard was thrilled to make his debut in United's 1-0 win against AmaZulu.
The youngster turned in an extremely promising performance alongside Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes in midfield that suggests he could feel at home in the first team.
"It was an excellent experience," he told MUTV afterwards, clearly still bubbling with enthusiasm. "Training and playing with them [the first team] is a great, new experience for me and hopefully I can carry it on. It's all come so quickly, you know, and I've developed better than everyone assumed I would and kicked on from there.
"It's been great. It just tops it off making my debut for Manchester United. There's nothing better really.
"I had to treat it like a normal game and ignore the fans and the stadium. I had to concentrate on what I do best. It's better having your mates with you to guide you on - I've been playing with them for years so it's really good."
The presence of Carrick and Scholes also went a long way to help him settle quickly into the groove.
"They've been in the game a long time and for those two to speak to you the way they do, you get tips like that and it's a good learning curve for me," the Warrington-born midfielder added. "I'll take that into my game.
"Hopefully, this season the boss will keep me with the first team in training and take me to games and gives me good experience."

was like finding a dollar in the back pocket of jeans. nice but not over whelming by any means. good to see some positive progression from the reserves. we will see how this turns out, and hope he is tested with stiffer competition.

Jese was under the radar in the the winning Youth cup squad a few years ago, he was over shadowed by the reputation of Morrison, Pogba, Keane and Tunnicliffe, but all credit to him as he has worked hard and is getting rewarded by the boss for his effort and is a serious prospect now whereas before it was always "he wont make it at utd"

I think this kid has world-class potential. His pace, movement, first time accurate passes, his flair. Such a lovely talent. After a good loan I think he'll be ready to start for United.

My only negative with him is that he looks a little light - he could do with a week on the "Anderson diet". Tremendous little player though.

It's the same with Larnell Cole, Chelsea's Josh McEachran. Once these lads get to 21/22 and when they build more power into their game then they'll be some players.

I think he's got amazing awareness for a young lad and great passing. Apparently the Boss said he was reminiscent of Jean Tigana. If he's half the player Tigana was, we've got an absolute gem.

Im 29, never had the privilege in watching Tigana but i hear he was very good.

I watched the Peterborough game last night and at times he burst forward so fast with the ball it was refreshing. That mixed with those lovely quick first time passes and movement. I think we have a gem.

The Anderson diet should never be attempted by any serious athlete.

I've only seen Tigana in videos, but from the way people speak about him he was fantastic. From what I can see they were on the money.
